Did you forget from the flashbacks that their father was racist toward them for being half human? That's where his hostility comes from, and it's highly unwarranted--especially given that HE'S the one who knocked up a human woman.

Vex and Vax's mom was a human peasant. She lived in a small village that was destroyed in a dragon attack many years back. That's why dragons are Vex's preferred enemy and why she can sense them. It's their flashback scene from the opening.

Oh no Syldar is an absolute prick, remember the flashback in the Sunken Tomb admonishing Vex about the crown? He looks down upon his children, they're half elves so he feels they don't understand his culture to the same extent, his parenting was aggressive and neglectful, thus why Vax snapped and took him and Vex away. Their human mother Elaina had died from a dragon attack in the village they once lived in sometime after the twins were invited to live with Syldar. Percy's addendum did actually go differently on the table, since Syldar was one for nobility and formality, but this rendition furthers Vex letting out her repressed anger towards him. The line 'if I could pull your blood from my veins and give it to you I would' was used on the table. Oh you won't know about Garmelie's true form yet, but bear it in mind

In the very first episode Vex and Vax tell the rest of Vox Machina about how their mother died from a dragon attack when they were children (and that’s why Vex can sense them, she studied them after her mother died). The opening title sequence shows a young Vex and Vax in front of a burning village. Later in S1 they also mention that they are half-elves and that used to live in a place called Syngorn. The flashback in S2x03 show that they lived with their father for a while when they were kids. It also showed him being racist by him calling them “diluted” because they are half-elves. Vax then tells their father that they are done with him, grabs Vex, and they run away to live by themselves. The father is clearly shown to be emotionally abusive. So him now (2x08) saying how civil he has been and how they were disrespectful are clearly lies. As for 4:17, no they weren’t they were children! Plus it’s shown in 1x01 that they have always had hearts under the protective asshole-ishness.

Funny that you compare this Archfey to Vecna from Stranger Things, because Vecna, the lich king from the D&D lore, made an appearance in season 1. He is "The Whispered One", whom the Briarwoods tried to summon. They just couldn't call Vecna by his name in The Legend of Vox Machina, because this name belongs to Wizards of the Coast.

Part of the issue is that Vex wants to gain her father's love and acceptance, and constantly goes above and beyond what is expected of her, even to her detriment. In contrast, Vax is dependent on his sister, and he does not really care for what his father thinks of him, so he can see that Vex's efforts are futile, as their father will always find some reason to set them aside (they will always be half-elves, half raised by a human peasant), and ultimately self destructive and detrimental to his sister, hence why he is so pressed to leave and have nothing to do with the man. Their father will always give them a goal, if only so he would not have to admit his racism, but will ultimately always push it forward. Today it's show the bow, tomorrow it's fight in the front lines, etc.

You're the first person i've seen to not call Syldor anything but the biggest asshole. He didn't think he was, but he really was terrible - he took the twins from their human mother, treated them horribly (as seen in the flashbacks in episode 3) until they ran away. Not moustache twirling, but not remotely a good father given his racist attitude towards his own children. He was slightly better in the campaign because they had proved themselves - he'd sent them to find Sir Fince (who was missing instead of the role we saw him in during the first two episodes)

Here's the rundown on the family history of Vex and Vax, if you want to know (I doubt the show is going to explain it more than it already did) Their father, Syldor, was passing through the town called Byroden, where he met their mother, Elaina. After "spending some quality time together" they parted ways. Eventually, Elaina gave birth to Vax and Vex. 10 years later Syldor found out he had two half-elven bastard children, so he took them away to Syngorn. There the twins got some education and martial training, however (as you could have seen in episode 3 "The Sunken Tomb") their father was a classist racist asshole, so they ran away. On their way back to Byroden they picked up Trinket (episode 4 "Those Who Walk Away"). Unfortunately, when they reached their destination, the town was on fire, and their mother was killed by a dragon (can be seen in the intro). Having lost their home, the two went out to travel the world and adventure, eventually joining Vox Machina as its original members (Pike and Percy joined later). Of course, The Legend of Vox Machina has its own lore, and some things I wrote can be contradicted by the show.

@@nickthedreamer4434 The only minor difference so far is they didnt get trinket until later, and Vex was by herself. Not needing rescuing by Vax, she killed the poachers, as well as Trinkets dying mother, never telling Vax what happened only that she had found a bear cub. Saundor actually brought it up as a memory that haunted her, as it was the first time she had killed anyone.

  • @InkyPetrel

Yeah, their father isn't a villain, but he is "an absolute prick" as Vax said. A complication in the road for the party, and a chance that things could have gone very badly. The distinction is important though, not a lot of folks draw that line. He might have one of the more punchable faces in the realm, but he's still *technically * on their side vs the dragons. Vex walked the right line in the office, if she'd let Vax hit him like he deserved, you KNOW Percy and Keyleth would have been right behind him ready to brawl, (they'd both follow the twins' lead anywhere, ironic from the two "royal" party members), and it would have turned into an arrest or worse, with no easy path through to the bog. Vex making everyone stand down stopped it becoming a whole Situation(tm), but she gave space to her own anger once the larger goal wasn't on the line. The hug Pop-pop gives Pike when he sees her always makes my heart grow three sizes, it's such a wonderful squashy grandparent hug. :D No, you don't know who Garmelie is, and you don't need to, don't worry you didn't miss anything. Just file it away for now. :)

It is so weird how he is so readily taking their fathers side given what we know. We literally saw Vex and Vax leave in a flashback two episodes after their father called them “diluted”. He is a bigoted prick who constantly looks down on his children for their half elven blood. THAT’S why they dislike them. No Vex and Vax aren’t the most upstanding pristine people but in this case their disdain is well warranted. Additionally I always find their father’s attitude horrendously hypocritical. Vex and Vax are looked down on for something they had no say or control of and yet the only reason they are half elves is because Mr. high and mighty humans are beneath us slept with a human to begin with. He’s basically racially condemning his children for his choice.
