I once watched penny skate mini ramp at a snowboard comp in the 90's. He was wearing a knackered old pair of what looked like timberland boots, and riding the ramp so effortlessly that everyone watching was hypnotised. At one point he was trying a kickflip to fakie above the coping and kicked the board away a couple of times. On the third try he caught the board, but ended up slamming really hard at the bottom of the ramp. After dragging himself back up the ramp, he sat down looking pretty broken and drank a beer. After about ten minutes, he dropped back in and nailed the kickflip to fakie and then pulled the most beautiful switch frontside flip out of the other side. He may not have had the largest bag of tricks of all time, but no one has ever made skateboarding look so effortless, and I doubt they ever will.

You're right, but he's had an insane amount of tricks as a teenager, at some point he might've decided to only film his smoothest tricks. His old videos have advanced tech tricks that are amazing even by today's standards.

Same, i started skating in 95 til 2005. The late 90s was thee best skating era. The clothes and shoes. Music , everything. Now im just old. But still always watchung skate videos.

@@mrchrisadams43 Nah it's all a revolving door, just different dudes doing the same tricks. Look at pat Duffy in 92. Then you got Eric Koston. Guy Mariano is still doing tricks no one else can do, Gonz was doing 270 nose blunts in 91. And kickflip front boards. Marc Johnson is still better than anyone else skill wise and Daewon song too.

In 2003, I was in a forest 15 miles outside of Bristol and heard a crazy noise. As I neared the sound and the mist cleared, I distinctly saw Tom Penny backside smith grind a fallen oak and 270 out. And just like that, he was gone! True story.

This is true freedom. It’s not a $2,000 stimmy from the government, holding power over somebody else to gain control, etc. It’s about entering a zone where only you reside inside your mind where everything clicks and melts away. Just you doing you while not hurting anybody else. Most people don’t reach this level of enlightenment or find themselves on a spiritual journey. I think some people will just say this is just Tom Penny skateboarding, but this is art. A man who unlocked his mind and tuned into the infinite. Not many in skateboarding and in life have transcended this like he does on a skateboard.

When penny was so sick, he dressed sick, skated sick and the music in his parts was perfect

the hockey rink footage is in calgary, my aquatince was the es shoe rep and shared van space with tom for 4 days - he saw tom eat food 0 times the whole trip!!! just alcohol and blunts am pm.

yup. it's called flow state. Michael Jordan trained himself for years so that he could enter it at key moments in a game. Penny, on the other hand, just seemed to have it naturally. dude must've had some accomplished past lives...

11:35 - is Oxford in the '90s. I was stood next to the filmer, he kept going around the corner and does another set of stairs out of view of the camera in the same line, so dope. He makes everyone around him skate better, anyone who has ever had the privilige knows what I'm talking about.

When I first started skating and learned to kickflip I was told I skated like him and had the potential to be the next tom penny. I did get sponsored and traveled the country doing competitions from tampa am and more. I got distracted with drugs and the lifestyle much like Penny but I never came back. Big time regrets. Im 35 now and try to skate here and there but that time has past me by but I love to still go out and have fun.

Tom is so amazingly talented. Clean tricks everytime and a style that can't be duplicated.

I have to play Tom Penny clips on slow mo to truly appreciate what I'm seeing. The pop on his nolie cabs and threes is mind-blowing. The pop and catch of his frontside flips over the pyramid to flat is like a bird flying in full command of the air. So many more things I could mention. To hear the stories of how effortlessly he did mostly everything and at spots he was just visiting for the first time. Just amazing. His skating is inspiring me till this day.

Wooow. I never knew he did all those switch stuff down rails back in the mid 90. I had his flip shroom deck back in 2002.

Anything that involved a kickflip regular or switch he did so well. He made fs and bs flups look so good! Jesus I mean it really was a thing of beauty. Thise switch fs flip reverts on mini ramp popped a couple feet above the coping, like who was even thinking about stuff like that back then? Even if they were doing it they weren't doing it like that! What a treat it was to grow up in that era with him even if he was gone for a ling time, it just added to the insane ledgend that he is.

Definitely a pioneer without realising it at the time, and thinking about it, amongst others...Geoff Rowley. I didn't realise that he is a year younger than me either. Skateboarding has a long history and Tom is part of a significant shift in that history. Nice one Tom!!!

2-22-2021 i met tom at my local park in la serena chile, i was recording a fs noseslide, when i adjusting the camera i listen a skater near me, when i look at my back see him and i cant believe it, so greeting him and talk a little, he pick his board and do a treflip air off a brick (very smooth) then he sit and roll up something, we keep talking and i ask him for a photo, he said yes with no problem... a day i wont forget

Crazy to see Tom skating along side Luan Oliveira at Flip demos! Both have the best styles in all of skateboarding in my opinion. Tom is a casual old school style while Luan is aggressive new school style with the quick feet set up before tricks.

I made almost this exact comment years ago on that trick. It's almost redundant with Penny. Penny can literally do every known "basic" trick you can think of plus like a hundred alien ones.

Penny has this way of floating on a mini ramp and pool sk8ing its amazing and I don't see any other sk8ter who floats in this way. I have seem Tom sk8 not just in videos but IRL its a hypnotic effect.

Tom was the king of kick flips and front side flips. I remember watching the ETNIES Video when he did his first filmed 360 flip and was amazed. He was just so chill and would’ve loved to have a session with him back in the days.
