I teared up when he was singing that song while holding the old otter fur. You can see the pain of loss, lost culture, lost traditions.. He is a man who's family in older generations probably lived with the otters like a Ghibli film and he watches now as they are destroyed by greed and intolerance. I cry for you sir, because someone needs to weep for this dying world and the people who can do nothing about it.

I read Tarka The Otter as a kid and fell in love with Otters. I also love Racoons too. A woman in London owned one and she entered it into dog shows which was so funny and amazing to see.

They are talking about real traditions though, there's 13 in the series. I recommend "He Dances For His Cormorants" about a traditional fishing style that is still actively practiced (in the time of filming). It is more documentary, less added fiction. Legend of Otterman is about a practice that has been lost due to war and its aftermath.

It depends on species, and how well they're cared for. Some captive otters have lived 25 years. Of course, wild otters are more likely to die of disease, predators, or simply becoming too old to feed themselves well. Siri's estimate is probably accurate for wild Asian small-clawed otters (which, I think, is the species shown in the movie).
