This is still the best thing I’ve ever seen in a video game. We need a Legend of Dragoon prequel. The Dragon Campaign.

The defining scene in the whole game for me. Since we had the dart story in the game i really wished we could get the story of the original dragoons. the battle seems a lot more epic with all those dragons and virage, and the original dragoons are quite interesting too, the bloodthirsty kanzas, big but kind belzac, the bullied damia, shirley who was said to be the one who holds this bunch of rag tag together. Not to mention their relationships, rose and kanzas seemed to be hating each other, damia being attached to rose, shirley and belzac love story, rose and sieg. There's so much i want to know about the original dragoon. really wish they'd make a prequel game, or some kind of animation movie or something to tell those stories.

+itsme2pick Id love if they made a second game based completely on events before, during, and after the dragon campaign. End it with Zieg and his new family in Neet, show rose walking towards the village enveloped in a dark aura, about to kick start the events that would lead to legend of dragoon. Just make all of that the end cutscene, then remaster LoD. Holy fucking money, theyd never be broke from those sales.

itsme2pick totally agree with you (you just forgot to mention the Nerdy Syuveil), and I agree with Dave Drake as well, but I also think this whole game deserves a complete rework, for both the graphics and the gameplay, and all this story before the Dragon Campaign, with Shirley gathering the original Dragoons, this would make a very nice DLC. Anyone please write this before-Dragon Campaign story, I'll be the first to buy and play it! D:

+FrontierBattle As someone who is replaying this game recently, although I still find it great, I am also more convinced that it needs to be remastered. The story, although it has some good and cool ideas, is handicapped by the crappy script and some things that hardly make sense even in a fantasy world, such as the plot holes created by the extremely long interval between the Dragon Campaign and the game events. For an instance, I find hard to believe that the surviving Winglies would have remained so scattered, passive and resigned to their isolation during whole 10000 years, especially given how so damn powerful and advanced they were. That period also implies another overlooked awkward and disturbing fact: Rose is probably one of the greatest mass murderers ever in the history of JRPGs. Just imagine how many innocent people she had to kill during all those 108 years cycles, and only because that very weak excuse of "preventing them from becoming servants of the Moon Child". Even MCU's Thanos reasoning for wiping half of the universe population looks less villainous in comparison. I think a remaster is a good opportunity to fix those and other details of the story that also remained dubious or unanswered (such as where did Lloyd and Lenus come from if they weren't Winglies from Meru's forest and that hidden city in the Death Frontier. What is their backstory, and how Lloyd got his determination to build an "utopia" where all species could peacefully coexist). (Sorry for the long block of text. Thank you if you actually bothered to read it all).

It's been 19 years since I play LoD and now I'm a 37yo waiting for a prequel of this fabolous game.

That is simply because humans back then had abilities the current ones lack. Zieg had a mental/heart controling attack, which he uses to get Kraken to fight you. And Rose confirms he had that before then, which negates the whole Melbu has it shit. Current humans are simply weaker than the ones in the Dragon Campaign era.

@Ivan How so? If this is stuff mentioned in the strategy guide, sources outside of the game, etc. that would be good to know. As for the 'humans having special abilities' stuff, I've never been exposed to that being in LoD before, so I'm doubtful. But as for the Dragoons being stronger, that's possible but only from a Dragoon standpoint (for me, anyway). Rose does state that the power of a Dragoon comes directly from their rage/insanity and the nature of the conflict during the Dragon Campaign was one of annihilation/subjugation. Everyone present for the Serdio Civil War was exposed to the horrors of war but the scale and repercussions weren't nearly as high. So, I could agree with stronger, just not the globalization or exaggeration of "infinitely." And this is more so addressing the whole thread here, not just you.

Dude, Michael (Darkness Dragon) tearing apart the virage and then blasting another, probably my favorite clip in this entire scene. Right next to Belzac holding that platform up with a fucking claw through his chest, his strength is unbelievable.

Dave Drake did you notice something? In this cutscene it seemed to be a normal Virage that clawed through Belzac's chest, but when you're playing and you reach the Royal Capital Kadessa in Disc 3, eventually you find one of those Super Virages, and Rose says "... and this scar! This must be the Virage that killed Belzac!" What can you make of all of this?

+FrontierBattle Good observation! I think there are only two options: 1- A minor plot hole of the original script. 2- An error from the people who did the translation from Japanese to English. Maybe they confused Kazas, who indeed dies sacrificing himself to kill what it looks like a Super Virage, with Belzac. I wouldn't be surprised if that happened because, as someone who writes as a hobby, confusing names is a mistake that can appear sometimes (especially if you are working on more than one project in a same period).

Almost couldn’t breath watching this after so long. So much action, hope, sacrifice, and loss. Imagine being the ones fated to take down these beasts, and losing all of your friends, and the love of your life. What a story.

Belzac and Shirley died together as lovers, Kanzas as the psychopathic murderer he was before he became a dragoon, Zieg was petrified instead of outright dying to Melbu's Dragon Buster, and Rose was forced to flee when the battlefield crumbled.

It seems Damia and Syuveil died sometime before the final battle at Kadessa. Or if the two Dragoons were present, it was off screen and elsewhere.

This is such an emotional game. It has an overall melancholy "feel" to it. I can't explain it. A lot of death and memories, flashbacks, all of it make the game feel nostalgic and "sad," as you play through it, as if you were sharing in those memories yourself. This game has by far one of the most complex plots/story in all of video games, however, what this game does right (and there are not very many games that achieve this) is that the story is complex enough to not be considered overly complicated and confusing to the point where you lose interest because you forget what is happening. It is complex and compelling, emotional and entertaining. I love this game to death, the only other RPG title that I love more than this game is FFX, in terms of story/plot of course.

If you pay close attention, FFX basically copied most of LoD plot, characters and other details. Grandia 2, Tales of Symphonia, Lost Odyssey and other games based themselves in LoD's plot too.

It was confirmed by one source that Damia (the original blue sea Dragoon) died prior to the battle of Kadessa. She perished in an earlier battle, and apparently her cause of death was that she was crushed by falling debris.

A very, very good cutscene, this cutscene is far superior than most CGI we have seen today. I can feel the struggles, the legends about these hero and dragons.

Till this day, watching that finger go through belzac, and his suffering moans…man, gets me every time. Rest easy buddy 🫡.

The cutscenes in this game can go toe to toe with almost any PS2 cutscenes. I can't believe the PS1 was able to do this.

The thing i thought was unique was Belzac ran the orphanage under Emperor Diaz, giving children a place to call home. i often wonder if it was the constant attacks that called him to action....or that he found Shirley was going with Rose and company. It was implied he held romantic feelings for her. I really do hope they were reciprocated, but given the fact that shirley tries to avenge is death at this point speaks a lot that she at least thought of him as a comrade. The interesting part here is there is no Damia and Syuveil. I think Damia probably was separated and killed offscreen, given that in her "spirit" fight, she said that her worst fear was dying alone...making me think she may have done just that. But what's more heartbreaking is that Syuveil might have gone after her to save her but succumbed to his wounds before making it to her. That's because i want to say Syuveil had a morbid sense of humor "wanting to dissect" Damia due to her unique lineage, but actually growing to care for her along the way. So when she became separated , he did what any comrade would do and the rest thinking they'd be fine or maybe just thinking of the bigger picture, left them to their fates.

We need a remake of this game so bad! A prequel of the original Dragoons would be a massive plus too!

The first Dragoons were badass as hell! Melbu Frahma, the most powerful of all Winglies, and he was clearly using the Dragon Buster, but Zieg just went head on, and stabbed him hard. Belzac had a Virage clawing through his chest (the Virage meant to attack Shirley, Belzac says in Disc 4 during the Dragoons' Souls substory that he just shielded It with his body) while lifting a goddamn platform, all of this to protect Shirley, this dude was a beast! And Kanzas holding off what looked like one of those Super Virages all alone like a boss... I've missed some action from Syuveil and Damia in this cutscene, but still it shows just how epic and monstruous the Dragon Campaign was.

Damia and Syuveil weren’t shown in this battle because they weren’t there. Or at least, we know Damia wasn’t; she died prior to this battle. It was likely when they shot down the Tower of Flanvel or some other Wingly city and she was crushed under falling debris. Syuveil was likely killed prior to this battle as well, as the dragoons shown in this scene basically gave it their all at the final showdown, without the full team.

Man I remember this scene. Always kept that save file right before it. You can really see the horrors of war, even though it’s fantasy they really gave you a good picture of the horrors of combat. I remember being like 14 playing this game and just awe-struck at the graphics and drama of this scene.

I love how Rose was just flying around watching everyone get bodied and not doing anything. 🙃

Would love a new game serving as a prequel set during the Dragon Campaign. The original Dragoons deserve to have their backgrounds and characters explored. Is it possible there were more Dragoons even before them during the battle? For example, how much unfaithfulness and bullying did Damia suffer due to being half-human and half-mermaid? Maybe Belzac or Syuveil got their spirits from deceased allies? How hard and terrible was life for the world under the dictatorship of Melbu Frahma? How deep as lovers were Rose's and Zieg's relationship?

They sure deserve it. They are already quite interesting in LoD with the few glimpses of their backstories and personalities. If Sony would decide to give this series a second chance, it should do it not with a remake but with a prequel on that setting instead. It would help to attract new followers with a story full of potential and, at the same time, it could satisfy a lot of us old fans with references to the original game and more world building.

With several years of hindsight, I'd much rather the IP be left the hell alone. At least for now...

Dont know if anyone here knows this but the super virage in the beginning is the same one you fight in game, with the claw thing that looks like a harmonica. I just found that out haha. I thought virages were the scariest thing!

I swear to God that we need the prequel to legend of dragoon, For real! all the lore was laid out perfectly. Those days were hard for everyone, leading up to the great rebellion of humanity with their new power of the dragons. My God Sony, you're sleeping on what can only be gold for you guys! Bring us the dragon campaign!

Though you only hear it twice in the entire game, that music that plays when Zieg Feld battles Melbu Frahma is awesome.

@@jodon9214 Actually the Scarred Super Virage you fight is the one that Kanzas the Violet Dragoon self destructs on near the beginning of the video.

One of the writers says that Damia dies early on in the Dragon war, no info on Syuveil though my guess is that he dies at Mayfil considering how obsessed he is with it.

The VO for this game is more legendary than the game itself.

I wish they hadn't dummied down shirley role when she's talking to dart at her shrine. I know all she had was an arrow but it still would be awesome to see her in full fighting form. They said because she has white magic she would've too powerful but they still could've rigged the game so that darts team would have more turns or something

7 dragons and 7 dragoons versus a battalion of Virage's and Winglies. Yet the dragoons managed to win in small numbers.

This would be a amazing series and the end a actual full length movie

If Zeig didn't move from the dragon buster sword he would've been killed but he stab Melbu Frahma and Melbu used the stone spell to turn Zeig into stone.

The graphics of this game look like an early dreamworks movie, a rated pg 13 dreamworks movie.

Whoever still owns this IP is literally sitting on a golden egg. This would be day one buy for any kids who played this in the 90's who are in their 30's and 40's now.

Lighting Dragoon, Earth & Light, Fire & Dark. I'm not sure what happened in the lore with Wind but I'm pretty sure the Water died before this battle, I remember seeing her in the bonus boss battles when you set their hearts free. :( I loved this game, so much... I'd want a remake so hopefully, some kiddo gamer out there might feel abit of the awe magic I did when I played with these characters.. despite not having a huge fanbase, I was so happy to have had them in my life & memories.

Yep, the voice acting in terrible but MAN, do I love this game! There is so much nostalgia and it's still an amazing thing to pick up and play. As for the story, this has some of my favorite lore to exist and how interconnected all the characters stories are is great!

They really do need a prequel to LoD. I also love how the original Dragoon campaign for shadows which characters will be the final dragoons. Example, Shanna’s outfit doesn’t look like Shirley’s outfit, but Miranda’s does. Love that little Easter egg (though I do prefer Shanna’s outfit more haha)

If you can Google it, type in the soundtrack of that game. They should have the list of songs and musics on there.

Dude, the dragon campaign was BRUTAL The story of the 7 original dragoons did not had a happy ending, you may expect that the protagonists went into the final battle to come out victorious like any other jrpgs... They succeeded, Melbu Frahma was no more... But it was at the cost of their OWN LIVES. The worst part? Rose being unable to save her friends... She lost her true love, and had to basically live the rest of her seemingly eternal life as the antichrist, even when her intentions where for the good of the entire world.

The battle of Kadessa... If there is ever a prequel after someone makes a remake (who even has the rights for Dragoon and Legaia?!) this is the scene I want so badly to play. All the Wingly cities are so frikin' cool, but my favourites are Kadessa and Zenebatos, with Mayfill as the third coolest. Then it's Ulara, Wingly Forest, Aglis and Crystal Palace. But I want to see Winglies at their peak.

That epic moment.

If they ever made a prequel could not be about the dragoon campaign, could be about Dart's mother & the Black Monster, or about other heroes in b/w those 11,000 years with the "Black Monster" as the main enemy, so we can know how in the hell the golden dragoon spirit ended in a bazaar ...

TloD lore is really epic, i liked alot back then and i still like it. This is the best cutscene in whole game and thumbnail is best part. Shirley is definitely my favorite Dragoon. ❤ I remember ive made a savefile only to watch this. 😅 Too bad you cant fight her in Vellweb in Dragoon form... probably op... but in current playthrough im using Miranda and Kongol in their memories. I always though that a remake set in Dragon Campaign would have been amazing.

@@ikhwandarmawan8168 Yeah, they weren't in this scene and they didn't show their deaths. You find out about Syuveils death when you do the Dragoons sidequest and Damias was told by one of the writers of the game.
