The Legend Of Conrad Hart. (A Flashback and Fade To Black Retro Review)

Ойындар

Happy holidays to you all and a final video from me this year. Since I forgot to shill my channel in my script or video I'd just like to say if you like what you see please engage with the video and my channel to help stimulate my fragile ego.
My Blood Omen Retrospective is currently being edited. I recently watched a music video for a song called One Night In Tokyo by the amazing beast in black and the art style was so like Flashback that I had to dive back in. This video is the result of that trip down memory lane into the realm of what I consider true retro gaming.
So here we'll be looking at Flashback and Fade To Black. These two games were developed by Delphine software in France. Flashback is one of the stand out narrative platform games from the Sega Megadrive / Sega Genisis and Amiga 500 while it's sequel, Fade To Black, was a janky but heartfelt attempt at creating a unique 3rd person action game for DOS and the PSX.
So let's dive in and take a journey with Conrad Hart as he fights evil shape shifting Aliens to save the Earth in this science fiction 16bit classic. Sure hope I got enough key words in this description.

    Yo, can I just say this is a VERY well made video! Definitely deserves more views! I'm sad to see that Fade to Black doesn't have a lot of coverage these days. Sure it's dated and some might even say "unfun," but the fact I didn't know this existed until a few days ago says something. Games deserve to be remembered, regardless of quality. That way developers can learn.

    Informative video sharing your introspection to a nostalgic game. I only saw the gameplay on some rich kid's SNES back in the day. Now that Flashback 2 is up for release in November 2023, I pre-ordered Flashback 2. Thankfully, the original game is included and can be played on the PS5. Now I have a chance to play it for myself. And I think the 2.5D style of the new game is cool.

    Oh this takes me back. Flashback was one of the first games I played on my Amiga 600 back in the day. Back then, I was around 9 years old and times such as they were in Poland back then (early 90s) all I had was a pirated french copy (needless to say, I didn't understand much) but I still had fun running around the levels using cheats to skip between them and man those cutscenes were something else! I picked up the remaster on Switch and finally finished the game well over 20 years after playing it for the first time :)

    @@arkham666The main issue with Fade was that third person view was relatively new on the PC at the time. PC was and still the king for first person view because of keyboard and mouse. However third person at the time felt like you needed an extra arm or two . . .or three. . . in order to pull off certain skills or movements with a keyboard and mouse(side glares at Heretic 2). Thanks to games like Fallout 3 and Oblivion while not having complicated move sets did make keyboard and mouse for third person much easier to use. I'd say Fade could be remastered if the devs are able to make the controls more user friendly for keyboard/mouse users.

    This is a great lookback. I too adored Flashback, of which it made a big impression in my life. I actually also genuinely liked Fade To Black, even though it wasn't as impactful but just loved the mood of it. Unfortunately as a kid I got stuck on the level where you need to use the scanner to cross the bridge (which I didn't do at the time, so kept dying!). Two things to maybe improve your experience of Fade To Black.. On the PC, when in aiming mode, you can press a key where you aim in third person and not snap to over the shoulder, and it stays that way. I personally felt it better for me (though I don't know if you knew that already - I just didn't see you do it). The other being that part on the Gollum level where you cross the bridge - to avoid the target guns, you have to crouch, wait for the shot then run a few steps and crouch again, and repeat. So you CAN get past them without using the limited blue health regens. As janky as F2B was I actually got around fairly swiftly, but I felt it was unfair when I ducked in front of a morph to avoid gun fire, and they go into crawl mode and sometimes don't stand back up, so the limited controls and trying to get away from them had me usually in my demise! Anyway, nice video man!

  • @domm6812
    @domm6812Ай бұрын

    Music was a huge part of what made games special back then too, and F2B was amazing if you had a wave synth sound card like the AWE32. Having said that, you spend 2 thirds of this F2B video talking about Flashback. Then you don't go into much detail about what made F2B fun (which it was), in spite of the difficulty. Not much of a review. Also, your preamble about "hating" any complaint about change was unnecessary, and not as mature as you seem to think. Some new things aren't good. Some old things aren't bad. It's a very mixed bag, and it's important to acknowledge it all rather than insinuating change will always be great, and that anyone who takes issue with It is bad. Sure, complaining about all change is silly, but few people actually do that. Just leave that stuff out next time.
