Ойындар

The reviews must flow! And the spicy subject here is the first computer game adaptation of Dune, made by Cryo Interactive and Virgin Games in 1992. So, fun bit of trivia on regards to growing crops on Arrakis. If you have a sietch directly south of a Harkonnen stronghold and start growing crops (remember that vegetation always spreads North), you can make the Harkonnen just up and leave. They're only there to harvest Spice, and anywhere there's plants, there's no Spice. So you'll send troops to the stronghold, and the Harkonnens will have abandoned it.

I only played through the game once back in the 90's, so clearly I wasn't the biggest fan of it. But the music stayed in my mind. Years later I was glad to stumble upon the soundtrack on KZread and had been listening to it occasionally. Finding out that there is a recent remastered version, I'm very happy to support it.

In the house I grew up, the family computer was in my bedroom. I would be asleep late at night, and awaken to the sounds of my Mother playing this game on our old AST Windows 3.1 PC. The music was unmistakable, and still to this day, I remember it. But, I also had a fair number of nightmares because of the game, because of those freaky looking Harkonens, who absolutely terrified me as a small child. Still... it was always funny to know my mother was obsessed with beating the game, and spent hours playing it, just like I am now when I play more modern games.

Ecology was actually tactically interesting. Because the plants destroy spice reserves and always propagate north you can defeat the harkonens by starving them off resources. All you need to do is cultivate plants directly to the south of their settlements. It also makes your fremen more effective because they're all loyal to you once you start terraforming. I always used to use this method in the endgame as a kid. It changed the vibe of those last couple of hours of gameplay... but also I'll admit that 12 year old me liked roll playing as a teraforming hero who had more peaceful ways to shape the known universe.

Absolute classic. I was fortunate to be be blessed with this game as a pack-in title of a multimedia CD-ROM upgrade set back in the early 90's. For those who didn't grow up in that time. It was when CD-ROM drives were starting to become mainstream for PCs and manufacturers packed in a bunch of games and other software to sell the drives. The particular pack my Dad bought had Dune, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego and Stellar 7. There was also an edutainment CD about the NASA space shuttle but I don't remember much about it.

There have been a small and vocal number of us who have been championing Cryo's masterpiece over the decades. It did RTS before Dune 2. It's a real-time adventure game that's fully-voiced. It had an open world with a day/night cycle and recruitable companions. It was absolutely marvellous both from a technical and gameplay perspective. And it deviated from the original book AND the film of the same name!

  • @DebatingWombat

I wouldn’t exactly call Cryo’s Dune RTS, but more something like BTS (background time strategy). I definitely liked the game (though I was already a fan of the book, sooo…), but it always felt more like an adventure/RPG with some strategy game elements. But that very mix is what makes it fairly unique. I remember mainly being worried about its replay value, though.

Dude, this is crazy awesome! I have the European version and didn’t even know it! So, my Dad got me into this franchise, and growing up in Chicago, there was a big store right outside the city he’d always visit called “ELEK-TEK”. No voices, different title screen and opening animations, and didn’t have the McLaughlin cover on it. My Dad bought it from that store without ever leaving the country.

What CRYO did is a masterpiece. and whole game (diskette version) took only 1.6MBs. also the visual effects, transitions, 256 VGA color palette shifts were amazing, this game was like anything else before. still listening to those soundtracks from time to time. and 2024 remaster, what a nice surprise.

I found these games in the late 90s when I was a preteen. I wasn't quite old enough to fully appreciate the books, or even the Lynch film, so these games were actually my introduction to a universe that I'm now deeply obsessed with as an adult. I watched the film soon after, which was an unfolding inspirational journey as I continued to get more out of it with every viewing. In high school, I was ecstatic to finally borrow the book from my school library. Since then I've made it a mission to digest as much Dune lore as possible, and Brian Herbert has made that a daunting but highly enjoyable challenge. Great video, thanks for sharing!

Always good to see people talking about this game, my first introduction to Dune. I've seen so so many articles over the past 30 years (and several this week) saying "the Dune games have a long legacy, going all the way back to the original game, Dune II". So few people seem to even remember that there was a Dune I.

This is the kind of thing that seems most jarring about old games now. There was such a push to include FMV, but there were still gulfs between live captured video and rendered or animated cutscenes and gameplay. It didn't matter _as much_ back then, when we were just excited to see any multimedia. But now, it seems awfully disjointed.
