What makes this so beautiful is that after the opening cadenza, the music could have become anything. A complex, nuanced jazz piece…but life happened. And every so often it can be beautiful

For how beautiful this scene is, it is also incredibly sad. He's making up a love story in his head, he dedicates a love song for her, but at the end of the day it's not real. He barely even speaks to her, it's all in his imagination

This scene demonstrates the contribution that music makes to a movie. Good music can give a scene power despite weak acting. Turning off the sound reveals the embarrassingly bad acting here but playing it back with sound brings out the emotion that the actor fails to do. No composer did it better than Ennio and it saddens me to think he was irreplaceable. His passing is such a great loss. I can't watch a movie without thinking how much better it would be if he had composed for it.
