The Legacy of Communism in MONGOLIA | Travel Vlog

In this vlog, I'm exploring the legacy of communism in Mongolia. We start by visiting an active Buddhist monastery in Ulaanbaatar called Gandantegchinlen Monastery, and then we visit the Zaisan Memorial, a monument built by the Soviet Union on a hill above Ulaanbaatar.

    As a Mongolian, its really funny how you saw the Lenin and felt like Bald and Bankrupt. I just realized even the apartment I live in is built by the Soviets lol. Also, if you look north west from the Zaisan memorial, youll see a lot of Soviet built apartments, I live in one of those :P.

    7:10 , rainbows!! I'm Egyptian and we kicked it with a Mongolian crew in college, they didn't speak English but we would still go over, have tea with them and play videogames. Awesome kids, all I remember was that they all had infinity cars back in Mongolia as part of a crew. We'd sometimes use google translate to talk about our cultures , we always had a Pharoic / Mongul connection. It has to do with being forgotten by the world after being at the very top at some point. They're proud, super kind and loving people.

    As a Mongol, I would like to note that we have nothing that is related to Egyptians. These Middle Eastern and Turkish people are nowadays trying very hard to put Mongols into the same category with Middle Eastern culture. Mongolia is a Northeast Asian country, which shares similar culture and have an affinity with Northeast Asian indigenous people.

  • @H2o3G2a

    @H2o3G2a

    @@kts437 you missed the point, I was talking about the empire in terms of history, not the culture. Now if you want to be even more accurate then you and the Turks have more similarities than any other culture in Asia, Europe, or Africa. I think a quick look at the map and the history of the Mongolian empire would clear things up. I've also never heard a middle eastern compare or even say anything about the Mongolian culture, where are those "middle eastern and Turkish people"? I'm curious, where have you heard that? As a matter of fact, it was our Mongolian friends that showed us photos where they dressed as Pharoes and the conversation began from there.

    @@H2o3G2a Having lived abroad for many years and worked and socialized with many Turks, I can assure that Mongol culture is completely different from Turkish culture. Turkish culture is more Middle Eastern and Mediterranean. We share similar culture with Northeast Asians traditionally and also share similar culture with Russia and some Eastern European countries because of the shared history of the socialist past. Culturally and spiritually, I cannot relate to Turks and Middle Easterners. If you google, there are numerous KZread video contents created by Turkish people, spreading misinformation and rather forceful claim that they share the same culture with Mongols and Mongolia is their ancestral land. I would like to kindly request the Middle Eastern people to leave Mongolia in peace. You guys have such an aggressive expansionist mentality in your gene because of your religious belief of Islam. You guys have to be respectful of other non-Muslim culture. Forcefully identifying Mongols into the same culture with Turks is as same as forcefully identifying someone heterosexual as gay or lesbian.

    Hey Doug, I just stumbled on your Mongolia vlogs and I’m loving them. I’ve visited Mongolia a dozen times since my first trip there in 1995. I got back to the UK from there only last week. I’m just coming up to my 25th wedding anniversary with a beautiful Mongolian lady. I have to congratulate you on your attempts to speak Mongolian. Despite having a Mongolian wife, lots of Mongolian family and friends, and having visited the country so many times, I’m still completely useless at the language. It’s impossible. Our 7 year old daughter corrects every attempt I make!

    @@DaiMoscv it is for me. The main problem is that there are so many guttural sounds that Western ears aren’t used to. I have the additional issue with poor high frequency hearing so I’m unable to tell the difference between a sss sound and tss sound. Then of course there’s the totally different script that makes reading difficult. But that’s all excuses because my 7 year old daughter picks up the language easily. I have four English friends with Mongolian wives and we’re all useless at Mongolian language.

    The Mongolian language sounds unique because of two main factors. The first is the Mongolian л (L) which is a voiced alveolar lateral fricative /ɮ/. The second is the fact that unstressed vowels are reduced, which produces a lot of consonant clusters. For example, the word ажилтан (ajiltan) is pronounced something like /ˈɑd͡ʒĭɮˌtɑ̆n/ so it ends up sounding more as if it were written ажлтн (ajltn). Also, Mongolians tend to speak quite softly, which, combined with the strings of consonants, makes listening comprehension more difficult.

    To be fair to the Zaisan Memorial, it honors both Mongolian and Russian soldiers. It also honors the USSR's support for Mongolian independence from China in 1921 and USSR's defense Mongolia' at the battle of Khalh Gol in 1939 (in which the Japanese generals who invaded Mongolia were convicted at the US-run Tokyo Trials after the war. The Japanese loss at this battle is actually quite famous in WW2 history because it led the Japanese to change their war aims from control over Siberia and Mongolia to instead turning south towards Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, etc.). My comment is nothing now, it merely adds to those of Telisa TK, phantomtq, enkhee natsag, Jonatan Batnasan

    8:37 That's mostly because most of the older generations are still very fond of Russia. Also because we consider the statue big part of our history.

    Actually, Gandan Tegchilen is not mongolian word. It's a tibetian word. It came to mongolian language from tibetian with Buddism. To be honest, even we don't know the meaning of this word

    I don't know exactly when this monument was built (most likely post-1953), but if it was built during Stalin's time there definitely would have been a Stalin head bust. Although after his death, both in the soviet union and soviet - aligned nations (such as Mongolia, East Germany, etc.) there was a widespread De-Stalinization campaign. This included the demolition of Stalinist monuments (one of the most notable examples being in Prague during the mid 1950's when the world largest representation of Stalin was taken down by the communist Czechoslovak government on the behest of it's Soviet overlords), his name was removed from buildings, as well as street-signs.
