I love when drama is played like this, when it’s surrealistic locations and situations, but the emotion is played completely straight. The dramatic weight of the protagonist’s action seem so much more impactful when the stakes are this abstract but still so rooted in relatable emotion

I couldn't agree more. This, to me, is what art is about. Telling great stories with bigger than life characters, using all those things at our disposal (great actors, great movie sets, the unlimited power of imagination) to highlight our most intimate (and therefore most powerful) feelings.

They way his voice gently breaks down when he gets to the words cigarettes and magazines, it perfectly represents the moment Kevin realizes this is about him and he becomes completely vulnerable, this is such a great scene and an even greater performance.

Season 2 is one of the greatest seasons of tv I've ever seen. The writing and performances were spectacular. This show never got award recognition but the people who saw it know it was spectacular. Theroux as Kevin Garvey is still one of the best and most complex protagonists I've ever seen on screen, Carrie Coon was brilliant in every scene, and Eccleston stole the show everytime he was in a scene.

This scene is a perfect allegory for art in general. We all fear opening ourselves up to performing as it seems “silly” and any people refer to art as just “silliness.” But when we expose ourselves to art it can move us and bring us to realizations like nothing else out there, just like this song saved Kevin.

The ratings weren't good and rumours about a cancellation were being spread. Even the way they announced the third season was like 'alright, we'll give 6 episodes and that's it'. That's why I'm convinced they wrote the second season thinking the show might get dropped. Never seen a season were every episode ended on a cliffhanger that could have easily been the last or second to last episode of any other show.

Every time I see the show I say "whow" to myself. The greatness and emotion of this moment is all in this extraordinary desire to resist of a man to "return" and cling to life. With all his strength, with every little frame that can give him hope to resist. Every single face, thought of love and affection for his family are a small brick. Unforgettable scene. Light and immense in intensity at the same time. How great Justin Theroux is.I love it.

Shortly after watching the first time I had a bleeding on the brain. I nearly died and I swear when I was in my brain surgery I dreamed.. I saw my son. Then the doctor tells me you don't really dream under anaesthesia. I wonder if I went somewhere.

The show is basically about the human condition and how we believe we are special, and one day it’s confirmed true, but not for everybody. It’s all about tragedy and coming to terms with it. Human sacrifice. This scene is especially beautiful because Kevin wants to go home so badly he’s willing to do something that just seems stupid. It’s singing a song. Who cares? It means nothing. Yet it’s his only ticket. And he has been through so god damn much to get to that stage. I love this show.

Kevin legit died and he was slowly coming to terms with the fact he may never see his family again as he progressed through the song. If this stupid karaoke resurrection ritual doesn't work, he's stuck in this shitty afterlife hotel while his family is alive and will eventually find his murdered body. Kevin is going through the 5 stages of grief from the moment he wakes up in the bathtub and puts on the uniform to the moment he starts crying on stage. And it's all coupled with his guilt that maybe he did a lot of things wrong in his life regarding his kids, Lorrie, and Nora.

We all want to find "home." But like Kevin, maybe we don't appreciate what we have until we are faced with losing it. Humans are pretty good at taking things for granted. We have no control over anything and the connections we have, our homes/family, are sometimes the only thing making any of this ridiculousness worthwhile.

All of the responses so far have said it wonderfully. I'd like to add that there was an undertone this season of Kevin grappling with suicidal ideation, or at least complete apathy towards his life and wondering if he had some subconscious suicidal ideation -- so this song is his moment of realization of everything he has to lose, and all the reasons he wants to live.
