The Leather Element: Non-Traditional Leather Shop Tools

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, Chuck goes over some of his favorite non-traditional leather shop tools. Even though these items aren't necessarily made for leathercrafting, they can be super helpful to have on hand in our shop. You might even have a few of these tools already lying around your house!

    I found that the clear squirt/ketchup bottles from Dollar Tree or equivalent store, are great for holding and metering out mixed colors. A quick shake lets you see what the color looks like as they all tend to appear almost black if they are a dark tone. The nozzle is good for pouring, and it has a cap on a tether so you don't lose it.

    Baling wire sewn into the brim of a hat makes it rock solid and formable. Also, the "thrift store" of your choice is a leather workers best friend.

    If you do a lot of stamping I really recommend getting a 3-D printer, print the design you need on the fly. And there are some great designs freely available on sites like thingiverse that people have designed in the past. I use it a lot for personalization, you can print out a name perfectly straight but also in any font your word processor has, lots of options.

    syringes from a farm/feed store for measuring dyes. graduated, cheap and for me easier to use than an eye dropper.

    For wet molding holsters and the like, my go-to a lot of times are the plastic coated baby spoons. They fit the hand well and are good for multiple tasks.

    Wood working tools come in handy quite often. I even keep a hand plane for making jigs for molding. A cheap set of chisels that I can get razor sharp. I don't own and bag punches and using a chisel to cut connecting two holes punched in buckle slots and belt slots in my holsters. And a power belt sandfile (basically hand held 1/2" belt sander), gets into those tight radius' I know there's other things I can't think of off hand

    G'day Maddog, A plane with an open mouth can do a very accurate skive over a large area. Bonus you fettle the sole.

    Good old ironing, well.. irons. Just a thick flat piece of boatshaped metal. I have two both cost about 5$ a piece. One I removed the crumbling handle from and use for anvil. The other has a good handle and is used as a pattern weight ++

    Little plastic dropper bottle for glue. It’s very clean, cheap and accurate when applying.

    The best trick we’ve found for opening up contact cement is to just wrap a rubber band around the lid a few times. It gives you the grip you need to open without resorting to using the pliers the majority of the time and there’s no risk of deforming the lid with it.

    I buy long plastic lab pipettes to use like Chuck uses the eyedropper. They hold a significant amount of liquid and can be thrown away after the project.

    Chuck, long time fan, I enjoy all your videos. Two things, one, when using leather balm with atom wax, I find allowing the balm to dry and then buffing with sheep wool does a fantastic job and is allot quicker. Two do you think you will be doing a video on making leather chaps? I saw your chaps on one of the videos and thought they would be a perfect project. Keep up the good work, Mike Glovasky, Tecumseh Ontario, Canada

    What weight leather would be good for a gun stock cover. And what would be used for bullet loops?

  • @gobsauce8891

    @gobsauce8891

    in my experience,I've used 8/9 oz for the cover and 4/5 for the loops. however, this was for a shotgun, but i don't think it would be all that different for a rifle.

    I have a background in working with metals and gemstones. It is good to improvise and experiment with whatever you have available to use as tools and equipment. Always have a tonne of practice scraps to try ideas out on and usually a number of times to really nail down consistent results. Also bare in mind leather is a highly versatile tool in its own right for a number of applications. Your polishing strop is also your best friend if buying cheaper hardware store hammers etc to give them a high quality finish
