Just missed ya. I was camping at Laurel Hill SP RVing starting the 17th. Did Beam Rocks one day and Ohiopyle another day. Need to eventually hike this. Probably after I do the Quehanna and Loyalsock Trails.

I live 20 minutes away from the 30 trail head. I spend quite a few nights at the 30 area, turnpike area, and 271 area. Turnpike area, 271 area if I feel like going on an adventure, 30 if I just want to chill in the woods for the night. Spent the night at all the shelter areas over the years but those are my go to spots because I don’t have to drive that far. Pro tip; next time you hike on it spend the night at the 30 area. You can catch an Uber, head west on 30 down the mountain and at the bottom there’s an awesome little diner called Ruthies. Foods awesome and cheap, breakfast all day, and strong great coffee.

Loved this video! Loved meeting your Dad and watching you hike again. Planning on doing LHHT this coming June.

Prepare for dryer than normal conditions, many of the seasonal streams were already gone when I went and it was early for that. Usually you don't see this type of dryness until fall.

Another gem!

The prescribed burns are done by setting a tiny line of a fire and then setting a back fire and burning it towards the middle and they monitor it all the time and usually can put it out if they need to do so, sometimes forestry trucks come out in case the winds pick up on them . Not a roaring fire at all and usually does not kill the trees. They do a more intense burn when the forest has been damaged badly. Yep if they can they leave some brush for the wildlife to hunker down in again afterwards.

I love the part of the trail between mm11 to the lake. The only part I have hiked. I am not in shape for parts around Ohiopyle.

As a 42+ year photojournalist for network/commercial television, I've got to say your visual storytelling is some of the best I've seen on this platform. Would have loved seeing you make a snow angel in that last splotch of seasonal moisture you passed on that hilltop, eh.

They are now called Prescribed Burns because of the science involved with weather conditions - humidity, winds- the topography, the vegetation and near by buildings.

When I was a kid I dove in Kent Falls (CT) on an 85 degree day. The pool was about 8 feet deep and about 25-30 feet across. Thought I was going to drown because the water felt like about 40 degrees and my legs and arms seized up. I dog paddled and climbed onto a warm rock to warm up. I know the feeling you had in that lake.

Definitely doable. I've done it (barely) in 3 days but it was a bit of a stretch. However it did rain the entire time.

As an eastern PA hiker I’ve wondered what the Laurel Highlands trial was all about. Thanks for taking us along and introducing us to that beautiful trail Frozen. I’m 82 y.o. and trying to complete the AT in PA by sectioning.

All those downed trees - ice storm maybe? We had a super destructive one up here in SE MI this past winter.

Your Dad seems pretty cool. Makes me miss mine. He passed way too soon from cancer.

Just to give you a little information, in the 19.20 minute section you was asking about the down trees that haven’t been removed and close to the prescribed burn area a few years ago...... I’m not familiar with exactly on the trail you’re at but going to guess it’s within the boundaries of state game lands 42. The timber harvest in the game lands is to provide habitat for wildlife once the standing timber is removed. The remaining branches and tree tops are left behind to create “brush piles” for critters to make home and live in.

That makes sense. My Uncle used to do a lot of hunting in the area, but I had forgot that there was harvesting going on all the time.

I've watched this video a couple of times now as it is very informative and I plan on doing it very soon. I want to do it SOBO though. The one thing I couldn't find is the shelters you stayed in this trip. I believe the first one was the route 653 shelter but I think (could be wrong) that you said 356? I was really curious where you stayed the second night and then again the third night or was that the night you stayed with you Dad? If you have a sec., I would really appreciate it if you could clear that up. . .thanks! Your hiking videos are always so informative and just all around great to watch!

The wife and I watched and enjoyed your lhht journey yesterday. We have done it twice . Both times north to south. You got us anxious to do it again.

In 2015 we were in the 7Springs section. Woman I was with went into the woods to find a spot, when she stood up she didn't know where the trail was. She got lost and popped out on the Shooting range 😂 (no one was shooting at the time)

This was so special. My son, Too Tall, and i are planning on doing the foothills trail together. Its always special but we've never been on trail together that long. We may need prayer. 😂

Would love to see ya do the Allegheny Trail. After all it's in your back yard.

@@FrozensAdventures I'm talking about the 311 mile Allegheny Trail in West Virginia. It starts at the Pennsylvania State Line near Bruceton Mills WV and heads South across West Virginia ending on the Appalachian Trail just North of Pearisburg VA. The trail is a remote but very beautiful hiking trail going through the heart of the Monongahela National Forest.

I remember when you first hiked the Laurel Highlands and I was like wow 70 miles. Then the over 200 miles on the SHT was amazing. The AT was then for the elite hikers. 👍 Now next possibly the dream hike PCT. 💪 I will always be supporting you and glad to have you as one of my good KZread friends.

Now the special guests don't get much better than that. It sucks the rain squashed the camp hangout time. It's fun watching you get stopped by a view that you have seen times before. I know there are some trails I still have not gotten tired of hiking multiple times.

Beautiful trail!!

I had a Tarptent Double Rainbow LI. The ability to pitch it freestanding was a sanity-saver on several occasions through the entire PCT, but particularly in the desert. My dad flew out and hiked with me from Timberline to Cascade Locks. It was a treasured experience. Love it. If you get the opportunity before next year, I strongly recommend coming out to the mountain west to do some trips. It's night-and-day compared to Appalachia. If you don't want to spoil the PCT at all, Colorado in late summer is pretty comparable. I spent a week in the San Juans before I did the PCT and honestly, it was what made up my mind when I was still deciding which trail I wanted to do (coming from NY).

What?? You couldn't get that little tent on that pad? I literally put my wife's lanshan 2 pro on that very same pad! I will admit. It wasn't easy but I got it there. I only used 2 stakes for the vestibules only. Everything else was using the big rock/little rock method. Right about where you camera was or possibly right behind it, I setup my xmid 2p. Wasn't level at all but I made it work. I wanted her and our dog to have a good flat surface. The rest of the shelter area that night was full. Also, I think we've been at the 271 shelter area with those same girls before. Just as you described til around midnight. Constant chatter, flashlights in our faces, etc. Needless to say, for some reason, we "tried" our hardest to be quiet on our way out at 6am. For some reason my wife had to keep slamming the bathroom door on the way out. She said it seemed like it needed a few slams to get it to close just right! And we had to yell for our dog a couple times since we couldn't seem to see him at the end of his leash when our headlamps weren't directly on him. But we did "honestly" try to be quiet as we could. I swear! On a serious note, it was awesome seeing your dad out there with you! I could definitely tell you were enjoying having him there and also showing him how to do different things. Definitely get him a 25 wide pad! Either the tensor or something from Big Agnes. Probably the 2 most comfortable pads I've slept on. Those 5 extra inches are a game changer for the little weight penalty.

They used mulch in the tent site pads so my takes in my non free standing tent weren't having it. Had a nice flat spot where I usually pitch my hammock though. Those girls were soooo loud! We are both looking at getting wider pads for the extra comfort. We'll see what happens.

My family did the Grand Canyon in 2015, they have cabins at the bottom, if you can get a reservation do it, less stuff to carry, and it's a really tough hike. Having a shelter was so nice(they also cook you dinner and breakfast and give you a packed lunch) worth it!

Good to see your Dad out there! I'm definitely going to do this trail. I read the McCullough Johnstown Flood book this winter and have been interested in visiting the town to get a better idea of the terrain. Also want to visit Fallingwater. I'm getting excited already!

I always enjoy your videos! Have a great hike with your Dad in the Grand Canyon and let him know he can do it. My Dad past away in 2017 and he was never into hiking and not the best Dad either.

Well Jason that was awesome doing a hike with your dad. It suits you well. Maybe yall could do a bigger adventure together but I know you have a big hike coming up. Good video dude.

My first ever backpacking trip of any distance was in 2016 from the State Game Lands 111 parking lot to the Route 31 parking area. Two nights. One at 653 shelters and the second at Grindle Ridge. My pack was pushing 35 lbs and I came down with bronchitis the day before. I damn near died but I got it done. We keep saying we’re gonna go back but 7 years later, it hasn’t happened. I’d like to do it again now that my pack is 18 lbs and when I’m not sick.

Awesome to see you back on the LHHT! I'll bet some of those blow-downs happened during that massive windstorm we had up here in March. Another terrific video. Looks like your dad is rarin' to go! 🙂

Hiking in the desert is so different to hiking in midwest / east coast wet heat. You'll feel cooler but get a lot more dehydrated.

It’s on my bucket list, but all my friends from Pa doesn’t want to do this trail.

Great video! Loved the video and production quality and your positive spirit. I feel like that tent pad on night 1 would have been good practice on a pitch without stakes, using big rocks or something?

we do the LHHT every year. my wife calls the Ohiopyle section "My nemesis" but she's 50 and still doing it with me.

Have you switched from hammock camping to tent camping? If so, how come? I’m continuously debating between the two and constantly switched back and forth.

I do both. Because I've found comfortable options for both. Tent camping became a right because I wanted to hike the PCT. And hammock camping sites aren't as readily available.

@@FrozensAdventures I feel ya on the lack of hammock spots in the Sierras. I used to be an avid hammock camper, but as I’ve purchased better/lighter tents and better inflatable pads I find I sleep just as well if not better. I also like the separation inside the tent vs the openness of a hammock. But I prefer hammock in the rain for the fact of having space under the tarp to eat, cook, organize gear, etc.

Is leaving a car at the ohiopyle state park trailhead for 5 days sketchy or rather safe as you hike back.

There's 2 areas of ohiopyle the very small parking lot by the bar is sketchy I'd say. But the one at the top of the hill (official one) is totally safe. No one's going to want to bring their car up that dirt road to vandalize

Frozen you gave some bad info for the Forbes State Forest Section. It is illegal to camp in the forest along Laurel Summit Rd on the side The Trail is on. You would have to leave the trail and cross the road to camp outside of the Turnpike Shelters.
