That’s the only thing that is not making sense to me…Dracula can’t get to London looking like that or a huge Bat beast…at some point he has to turn into the black haired black mustached 30ish Dracula…Harker sees him young out in full view of the public, he meets, converses& deals w/ a # of businessmen/ realtors etc once he lands in London…story doesn’t work if he looks like he’s been decomposing at the bottom of a lake for a 100 years

I'm assuming this is Dracula's "true" form, and by the end of the film when the crew is dead and the ship makes it to London, he'll have a human appearance. But wouldn't it be funny is Nic Cage cameos as Dracula's human form?

I prefer it that romanticized way. Otherwise, Dracula feels too one-dimensional as a character. Sure, Stoker did make it a pure monster. But thast 's exactly my point, it's better to add more complexity to the character, Making Dracula able to feel emotions makes his character more complex and thus better. I like it when Dracula has 2 sides_ the monster-like and the more human-like.

That was one feature of the original novel though... Mina asked Jonathan and the others to feel sympathy for Dracula, and when she describes how his face got this look of utter peace just before his body crumbled to dust, it gives the sense that vampires, despite being evil and dangerous creatures, are also suffering. As Van Helsing explains, their souls are basically trapped and their bodies are undead shells driven by nothing but the desire to feed on others and create more vampires. I think it's possible to think something or someone is a true monster and still feel some sympathy for them, but it's very hard to do.

I saw this yesterday, it was just alright. I was never scared. The crewman climbing up was so dumb on his part. There's no help up there. I'd have run to the crews quarters where all the men are. Where the help is. Every time the crew tried to find or kill Dracula, they always did it at night. They know, by witnessing a crewmember burn in the sun, that the sun will kill him. So, when the crew the was still alive, within eyesight of the English coast, they planned to kill him again and when did they try? Yes, at night time. If I had been in charge, while the sun was up, I'd have loaded the crew in the lifeboats and set the ship on fire. Then we could have easily rowed to shore. It's not a bad movie, but definitely could have been better.

Thing is, them doing the "Vampires are burned alive when exposed to sunlight" is a major plot hole. This film is supposed to be pulled straight from Bram Stoker's original novel, and in that novel it explicitly says that Vampires CAN move in sunlight, but their powers go into a dormant state while doing so.

Having seen this in theater, I think it's disappointing that it did poorly at the box office. If they'd waited another month or two (closer to Halloween) and farther from Oppenheimer and Barbie, I'm sure it would have done better. 800 mil for Oppenheimer, 600 mil for Barbie, and only 13 mil for Demeter. It cost 47 mil to make, so big disappointment especially for a Spielberg/Amblin production. The horror movie market is a fickle one these days. Insidious 3 has grossed 118 mil but it cost only 10 mil to make. I think Demeter is the far better movie, but that's very subjective.

He rationed them. Killing the livestock, and then feeding on one person at a time until they got close enough to London that he could clean house and kill everyone. One of the characters figures this out and spells it out in the movie. They go on to mention that the direct killings only begin when it's too late for them to try and go back to the mainland they came from. By then, the crew literally has no choice but to try and survive till London.

If study deep into the mysteries. Long long ago initiates into the mysteries and private clubs like masonry etc would have to endure the worst test you could imagine sometimes they’d be sent off to sea in a tiny boat most never returned. In one case they were subject to walk into dark caverns and caves the ones who made it through entered a bright lit room under the stones and a large winged being with a sword screamed and flew over them attempting to cut of their heads they termed him “bat god” after this priests would come out of rooms and welcome the survivors. Almost makes you think those practices moved westerly…

Bram Stoker was inspired by the shipwreck of a Russian schooner, the Dmitry, which was wrecked in a storm in October 1885 on the sands just below St Mary's Churchyard and Whitby Abbey. In Stoker's imagination, the ship is renamed the Demeter and carries Dracula and his coffins of Transylvanian soil to Whitby. It has nothing to do with London. Whitby is where Dracula entered England.

The old fishing town of Whitby is full of history and the church on the hill was sacked by Vikings in 870 AD after which they became peaceful settlers in the area and named the ruined area “Hvitbabyr” meaning the settlement belonging to “Hviti” from which the modern name Whitby developed.
