    Only a three speed auto without even a lock up converter was unacceptable back then. The US had that in many of their domestics since the late 70s. The 4.1 efi was a very nice motor for a luxury car despite modest peak power on paper. Very nice sound systems then too.

    Are your running the original engine? Or have you chucked a v8 into it? If you have a v8 in it was it difficult to do? I have a 85 fairlane and it’s just a rolling shell, just trying to grab ideas to what engine should go in it.

    @@auscarlover7485 i had intentions of dropping the 8 in because I discovered the front end is already set up for compliance with heavy springs & strut towers from the ZJ. But I sold mine to a mate & he put a 5 speed manual in it without swapping the diff. He loaned it to me on a visit back to NZ & the fuel economy was unreal but around town it wasn’t driveable unless you stayed in 1st or at most 2nd gear. He later put a Cleveland in it & told me the only mod he had to do was piping for the heater hoses on the firewall as the left rocker cover had less clearance

    G'day Jon ... OMG that LTD is just plain gorgeous ...Love it .. It'd actually forgotten that the BF had the LTD and I pride myself on knowing a bit about Aussie Fords ...You did great to find one . The Falcon based cars are amazing .. Think about this .. During 56 years of production the mighty US then entirely Aussie Falcon produced the following levels .. excluding the very early models of course which I'm not too sure about but .. GL later Forte , Futura , GXL , Fairmont , Fairmont Ghia , Landau, Fairlane and the ultimate LTD . Of course the G6 , G6E and G6ET followed until it all ended .. . Then the sport orientated cars like the S, SR , XR's and the GS and ultimate GT's and the one and only GT HO .. Then many of these had hardtop coupe's station wagon and ute versions too !!!!.. Even the Territory had a strong link to the Falcon platform ..and there even was an RTV at one time .. The Aussie Falcon is undoubtedly the most amazing car that Australia ever had, For the common bloke or tradie to the Prime Minister .. So proud to say I've owned them (still do of course) .. This LTD literation is such a beaut car and this one is an absolute classic...Great review mate .As always .. ..

    Just love my BF Lane, it's not perfect now as it has 337 thousand on the clock and 17 years old. But i got it cheap for $3200 a few years ago. Nowadays they range from 9-15k depending on condition and kays. 337kms isn't all that bad considering most are well into the 500+ being ex premium hire taxis. My missus thinks it's nothing special but i love it and with some minor work it will come up like new again.

    Yeah I was looking for a DL LTD too. I looked at one that just broke my heart there wouldn’t have been a body panel or piece of interior trim that hadn’t been abused in some way. It wouldn’t have been worth the scrap value. But then I was fortunate to score a Jan ‘99 NL V8 Concorde in navy blue. The guy I bought it from was a collector & he only let it go because he’d bought an AU LTD & ran out of garage space. He had 3 x ZH LTD Silver Monarchs one of which was a one off special build colour coded Burgandy He also had a brand new (2013) FG FPV GT 335 Boss that he bought specifically as an investment as a collectors piece for his son who was only 2 years old 🙄

    That car looks beautiful. I think the engine in this LTD is the same 5.4 Triton found in trucks and SUVs in North America like the F150 and Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator. They are good engines but can have a habit of throwing out sparkplugs I think but when maintained they are fine.

  • @Lexe-is5nv

    @Lexe-is5nv

    Your right , it is the same engine, AUS actually got the 5.4 3 valve 15 months before USA. I have a G220 and love it, although there is a lot of scary stuff on the net that recommends staying clear of the Triton 3 valve. They have timing chain issues and oiling issues. Its very important to change oil often because sludge can get dislodged and block small oil galleries and passages leading to engine oil starvation

    Was a fleet manager at a rental company. Enjoyed my Fairmont company car but the durability of the interior of the BA/BF left a lot to be desired. Common issues were drivers door window control, bonnet release, the shiny trim on the rear door grabs, cup holder lids. Also the 18”* Rebel/XR6/8 wheels are weak and bent often. Also we had a diff leak on a 1 week old car in the car park of a brand new hotel, was a big job for the dealership apprentice on the broom there. Putting the ZF in it was a class move.

    Having owned both an AU Series 1 LTD as well as a 2007 BF LTD (still own), I very much concur with your point on ride quality and premium level. The BF is the better road handling car whereas the AU really was the last of the true Ford LTD's. The AU just seemed to be a higher quality trim/assembled car, as compared to the BF. The B Series cars, although far more popular than the AU, were very much a cookie cutter version of each other (Falcon/Fairmont/Fairlane/LTD). And I think that this is the reason why these LWB cars went away as they were too similar to the base models. However, I only sold the AU, to buy the BF and the BF is my preferred car. One that I will have for a long time to come. Are they worth $25K to $50K??? Kinda struggle with that one a bit, but hey, I could be completely wrong.

    Ok, a history lesson. You can nickname your engine whatever you want but for accuracy, there is no v8 “barra”. It simply does not exist. In 1990 Ford US released a new platform v8 engine designated “modular”. This engine replaced the Cleveland and Windsor pushrod v8s. The name “modular” is from the new manufacturing process. The “modular” family of engines ranges from the 4.6 - 6.8 v10. It includes the 5.4 and the 5.0 coyote. These engines were designed in the US and were manufactured in Windsor, Ontario. They delivered the first of the 3v 5.4 to australia for the falcon range and then put them in f series trucks, explorers, Lincoln’s etc. FPV took the block and the crank of the “modular” 5.4 and modified it before building a completely new engine known in Australia as the “boss”. Similarly FPV did the same to the 5.0 “coyote” block and were allowed to rename it the “Miami”. Meanwhile in Australia…….. Ford Australia designed and built the next phase of their 4.0 straight 6s. This is a twin cam, 24v VCT. This engine was named the”barra”. It didn’t exist in the US. Wasn’t designed in the US. Wasn’t built in the US and has no association whatsoever to the US designed, Canadian built v8s. The Aussie “barra” and the 5.4 “modular” are not related in any way barring dropping them in Aussie falcons. You can nickname them whatever you want but it is not accurate. Loved the review.

    I think $20,000 for the badges and a few gadgets and altered upholstery was a ripoff and not worth the upgrade. I'd be happy enough when a Fairlane. The DH and DK LTD from 1979 -1984 was the last LTD that looked way above the rest inside and out. This last iteration is the worst in lack of differentiation. The dash and steering wheel looked too similar to an upper spec Falcon for my liking. Ford just lost pride in their flagship by the 2000s and plainly didn't care as much, probably not helped by the fact the lower models were well equipped anyway. And the obsession with being sporty. Couldn't this be left as a floaty boat? Many people don't care about going around witches hats without hitting them.

    @@RossReviewsau Cheers, are you talking B series ZB from the 60's ? Have a look at P5 and P6 LTD's 73-79 Or Fairlane/Marquis from 76-79. They look much diff from Falcon. Even ZC/D 69-71 had vertical headlights and looked diff to Falcon.That's why Ford was smashing Statesman sales back then, which looked to much like a Premier. Ford fell into that same trap ( due to limited funds, after the AU debacle ) with the last Fairlane/LTD's, shown here.

    Very nice car. BUT by then the LTD and Fairlane lost there identity. Falcon tail lights didn't help.

    @@RossReviewsau Yes. Flashback to 1972 when the American Galaxie was retired in favour of the first Aussie LTD. No mistaking that for a Fairlane or Falcon. The same goes for the next LTD in 1976. Even the XD based LTD managed to look different from the Fairlane. That was the secret to Ford's success in this market slot, cars that couldn't be mistaken from their cheaper brothers.
