The Last Straw: Why We Finally Decided To Lose Weight (Whole Food Plant Based Diet)

If you are new here - welcome! We are the Krocks, a couple who started out at 800 pounds combined in June 2018. We switched to a whole food plant-based diet, and over the past 15 months, together we have lost nearly 300 pounds.
People ask us a lot about the "last straw" that made us decide to start our weight loss journey (well, Brian likes to call it our weight loss adventure 😊). In today's video, we discuss what inspired us to finally start losing weight.

I got up to 700 lbs I am down to 628 now. My last straw was a combination of personal pain and frustration with my inability to move around without considering the pain it would cause. My Doctor challenged me to go vegan. He had me watch Forks Over Knives and I got started.

I used to weigh 500 pounds, which at 5'3" is unsustainable and deadly. I got a gastric bypass and maintained a weight of 300 pounds for 20 years. Recently I started following a whole food plant based diet. I'm down to 270 and feel much better. I sleep better and have more energy. The odd thing is that I wasn't trying to lose weight exactly and didn't think I'd lose a lot. I was shocked at how quickly I dropped the first 10 pounds! Please keep doing what you're doing and know that you will always get support and encouragement from "The Krocks." They are genuinely decent and humble people. Jessica and Brian are young enough to be my kids, and I'm impressed by the wisdom they show us on every video.

I've lost 80 pounds so far with whole food plant based. I was on blood pressure meds and Metformin for type 2 diabetes. My doctor wanted to increase my meds and add another one for high cholesterol. My doctor is amazed at my labs and I can now hike 4-7 miles easily, when before I would get winded going up one flight of stairs. I got a breast cancer diagnosis last year just before Christmas, when I was 32. All during my treatment I was focused on managing my symptoms, getting through everything, and beating cancer 💪Once I did that this year (yay! 👏🎉) my focus changed and now I'm all about reducing my recurrence risk and my risk for other cancers. I have a genetic mutation, so I'm at a much higher risk than others. Eating plant based reduces my risk and also helps lower my anxiety because I know I'm doing everything that is in my control 😊👍 thank you for coming to my Ted talk 😂 Also, don't forget your monthly breast exams!

I actually think this is a positive outlook, because people will ask--over and over and over--if you don't "miss" certain foods, and it helps to think about how you ate them for decades, and they're _boring_ now. A book called Mega Health changed my life. I found this book at Costco one day in 1996. I read the book in one weekend and became vegan the next monday. I had been pre-diabetic, with poor kidney function, high blood pressure, a toxic liver and a lot more health issues. I weighed about 244 at the time. I have since lost about 110 pounds. I am still vegan after 23 years. I was tired of being in pain all the time and feeling awful, so at 42 I made the change. Pain is a great motivator.

Like you, I had been watching weight loss videos on KZread, but I can't pinpoint any particular video that "did it." But one day I just decided I wasn't going to be fat anymore. I was in a PhD program at a pretty prestigious university at the time, and I thought, "If I'm smart enough for this, how can I not figure out my weight?" And that was all I needed! I've lost 180 pounds, have run 3 triathlons, and feel so much better.

October 1, 2019 I made the decision that I was worth the work. I had spent too many years putting everything else in front of me. So at 458 pounds I started. I started counting my calories and walking (10 mins each day). Each day was a mental game, telling myself that I could do this, I was worth it, that the pain I was in wasn't going to stop if I stopped-I had to keep going. After the first month I saw that what I was doing was making a difference, so I kept going. Now, 13 months later I am 167 pounds lighter and mentally in such a better spot. My advice is always... find your why. Keep it in front of you at all times and keep trying, keep putting one foot in front of the other.

I suppose I should have watched this completely through before I commented. I started on the plant based diet after my grandmother's funeral in January. I have been feeling really run down and I believe I was just about to be septic again due to most likely another kidney infection. I kept feeling sick a lot on and off for months.I also had circulation issues in my lower legs I would get edema quite frequently, and I was just tired a lot, had no energy and just felt nauseous and like crap. I thought I really need to do something different this time.I had been vegetarian before, so I started looking back into that. And then came across all this information on KZread about the plant based diet. So after researching that for a couple of weeks I restocked my pantry gave away all the other food I had that wasn't on the plan and just went head-first in. After the first week I felt amazing. It may have even been within the first few days.at the time I was also having a really bad bout of gastroparesis which is an awful feeling. That subsided. I have not had any further issues with that and my circulation is much better in my lower legs. I don't like to weigh myself, as I think that is more detrimental to mental then helpful for weight loss, but I believe I was probably about a size 18 at the start of January and now I am a 6-8. I also do go to the gym which I added in about May. I used to go to the gym quite frequently it is a really good stress reliever for me. But I do do both, and recommend this type of eating to everyone I can. Unfortunately I have not had anyone switch over, but I am still hopeful. I intend on eating this way the rest of my life. This is definitely the way to go for everyone. Especially if you are having health issues. I'm not saying it will cure anything but I can guarantee you will feel amazing! I can honestly say that this was probably one of the best decisions I have ever made in the 48 years I've been alive.

I started the WFPB adventure about 10 years ago when I read Engine 2. I have taken 10 years of trial and error and starting again and trying to get my wife on board and do it with me. She really has tried but has not been fully committed (And she's about 80 pounds lighter than I am). Finally over the summer, I just gave up. I ate anything and everything that was not nailed down and gained about 30 pounds. I was so inactive my feet swole to the point they didn't quite look like feet anymore. And I just decided, I have to do it and I have to do it now and if she does, fine. IF she doesn't, that's got to be fine, too. So, I made a plan. Small changes at first with larger and larger ones. At the end of Augutst, I decided, "I don't eat candy. I don't eat dairy. EVER. Not ever." And so making those changes has created changes for us both. I have been counting calories but being largely vegan, but what it's taught me is-- the more WFPB foods, the less the calorie count and the fuller and happier I feel.I don't think I will continue that for much longer but it's useful right now. And if I go over what it says I can "have " for the day, I don't stress. And the weightloss has continuted. Last night we both wanted pizza and instead of calling for delivery we made homemade pizza with no cheese, loading with veggies and arugula and sliced baked potato. Was is health food? No. But was it a good change from an entire large cheese pizza? YES! And when we went to the store, my wife looked at me and said, "I want a Payday. You want one?" And I said, "I don't eat candy." And she looks at me and says, "Oh....yeah. Well, I don't need one either." And she put it back. I told her, "I am not trying to keep you from having it. If you want it, then you can get it." And she says, "No, I'm not going to eat a Payday in front of you. And besides, I don't eat dairy either." (I'm so lucky to have such a wonderful partner! So, I think for these 10 years I was really hoping that she would change and then I would have to change but once I decided to that it was on me to change myself, she not only was supportive, but she started making changes too. I've lost about 20 pounds since the last of August and I do feel so much better. I have at least another 100 pounds to go before I'm a healthy weight but I feel like this time is very different because I changed my mind first and the rest is falling into place. I also want to thank you guys because this channel has really been a godsend. The idea for salad for dinner has been a wonder in our house and my wife lost 6 pounds after that was started! (About 2 weeks-- and she'd been stuck at the same weight for a year!) Thank you guys and I hope you have an awesome Halloween!

I have the Engine 2 diet book! The “Raise the Roof Lasagna” has become our replacement for turkey for Thanksgiving. I started WFPB for health reasons and improved a lot. What has helped me stay plant-based is learning about factory-farming, animals agriculture in general, and how we humans exploit and abuse animals. Once I began understanding their fear and pain, I couldn’t contribute to that anymore and became completely vegan for ethical reasons. Check out Earthling Ed and the Joyful Vegan. They are kind, respectful. Also watch Land of Hope and Glory, Dominion. Earthlings is pretty intense- I couldn’t get through that one...just broke my heart too much.

Last year I realized that I wasn’t happy with my weight. For the first time in my life, my BMI was a tick into the obese range. My clothes didn’t fit and I didn’t feel good about my diet. Then my coworker and I randomly started talking about our weight one day and he introduced me to my fitness pal. I only used it for a couple of months but that’s all it took. I realized that I was wasting calories on mini snickers, and m&ms and juuuuuice...so much juice. My calorie intake was made up of so much refined sugar and FAT. I was raised by my very healthy mom and she taught me better. So I simply started to eat better and the fat started coming off. However, I know me...I need a reason to keep this healthy lifestyle up. Enter health goals...#1 run a 5k in 2020. #2 be able to deadlift my body weight in 2021. These goals really cemented my commitment to continue to losing weight and being healthy. Then I realized that I can’t run a 5k without weight training. Soooo now I have a gym membership and a trainer and I lift and I loooovvve it (hate/love it). It’s about getting to your breaking point (regardless of what it is), finding a path, and getting to it. If you’re still reading this...Get to it. You can do it. KZread is a great place to find inspiration and guidance. Join a gym AND GO (I promise no one is looking at you or judging you). Start going for walks. My last straw was that both of my sisters have had cancer. They are both doing well. One of them had a colostomy and went WFPB and she turned me on to Chris Wark and his Chris Beat Cancer program and vegan way of eating. I have been 25 lbs overweight forever as well as being hypoglycemic. I did the Atkins diet a couple of times and lost the weight both times but found the keto diet to be too restrictive to be sustainable for me, although it kept my hypoglycemia at bay. I find that the WFPB way of eating is very enjoyable and the hypoglycemia stays at bay as long as I don't eat refined carbohydrates like pretzels or rice cakes (which are not Whole Foods). I haven't lost the 25 lbs yet in spite of being vegan for about a year now but my sinus issues have really changed for the better with no dairy. I recently began taking a supplement that has to be taken at the end of a meal~ when I'm finished eating. And what I found out is that I often don't really stop eating. I am a stress eater. And I eat all day long. I eat super healthy food but I consistently overeat. That and lack of exercise, I believe, is keeping me from losing the weight. Revelation! Now I am more mindful and hope to see the weight come off as I change my habits. I love you guys! Thank you for sharing the WFPB lifestyle and adventure! Group Hug!!! 🤗💕

We are WFPB (whole food plant based) now. We don't use any oil, and try to stay away from highly processed foods. The secret to losing weight and being healthy is to make a change in your head first. Until that happens you're only spinning your wheels.

The last straw for me was seeing photos of myself dancing at my daughter's wedding. And my doctor telling me it was time to go into statins. All at the same time. And I thought, "Crap, I'm not even 60, and statins are a life sentence." So I began with simple changes like food logging and increasing my water , vegetables and fruits. Looked up Dr. Dean Ornish and studied a bit of his stuff, modified my diet some more. Discovered Dr. Esselstyn. And started to find KZreadrs like you. Over the course of six months I learned a lot, became WFPB, lost 40 lbs and 40 points from my total cholesterol level. I'm happier, doc is happier, and I'm still learning!

I've been overweight or obese since puberty. After I got married 4 years ago, I was diagnosed with "unexplained infertility." In April, my doctor said the only thing she could suggest was losing weight, "even 20 lbs". For me, I wanted to see if it was weight was the contributing factor, and I wanted to be around for my husband and the son I have. Fast forward to September and I hadn't lost much so I started doing protein shakes for breakfast and took off 7lbs. However, I didn't think that was sustainable for me. I had gone vegetarian during my treatment when I conceived my son. So I thought maybe I could do that again when I stumbled across your videos. I got the Eat to Live book, read it, and started implementing it around mid September. I've lost 15.5 lbs since making the changes. And I've slipped up a handful of times. So my total weightloss in two months is a little over 20lbs. I have a lot more weight to drop, but getting to this milestone for me and being my lowest in 3 years is a good motivator to keep going. And I've just had to get new jeans and found I've dropped a pants size. That was a happy surprise. I am so glad I found your channel!

alli posh you are doing a great job! I also experienced unexplained infertility for 3 years and my dr told me the same thing. This motivated me to lose 20 lbs (10% of my body weight) and then we used clomid for only one month and got pregnant. During my first pregnancy I experienced large cysts on my ovaries that required close monitoring. I am happy to report that after almost a year of eating plant based I have lost more than 80 lbs and am pregnant again (without clomid) with zero cysts this pregnancy. Keeping going, it is so worth it! :)

I have no proof, but I think all the vegetable nutrition helped. No matter what happens, I am happy knowing eating nutritarian is helping me be happier and healthier for my family! We booked a much anticipated cruise for early 2020, so I am hoping to use this time to just focus on getting healthier. And hopefully try again for #2 in a few months!

The big turning point for me was a SMALL shift in my thinking. It was so small, but the impact was huge! I shifted my focus from “losing weight” to “improve health & fitness” with a Fit By 55 mantra. This little shift from lose weight (aka deprive yourself of things you love to eat and drink) to improve health and fitness (aka move more and eat food that will fuel better health) was mind blowing for me. Why had I not thought of this before? So I bought a Fitbit and added another mantra 10,000 by 10 a.m. This helped me to start my day off with a boost of endorphins and a feel good feeling that further fueled me to eat more healthy. I lost 25 pounds (2 years ago) and have kept it off. I met my goal and got fit by 55. My Fitbit continues to keep me on track and my food journey & quest for continued good health brought me to Whole Food Plant Based, and an amazing community that includes two Krocks! Krocks rock!!!!!! Thanks for all you do and mostly for sharing yourselves with the world. Life changing work. Be proud.

I so relate to the anxiety and depression. For me my close friend who was vegan had been trying to convince me for a year. In June I had a miscarriage. After that in August my doctor said that she wanted my blood pressure to be lower before my husband and I tried again. She told me to try the Dash diet. I was extremely depressed from the miscarriage and now the doctor is saying my blood pressure is too high. So again my friend suggested going whole food plant based. Two months in and I have gone down a size and my blood pressure is in the normal range. You guys are doing amazing and such an inspiration!

I have been trying to lose weight for over 13 years. After having my daughter I was at 230lbs. I didn’t take care of myself well during pregnancy and gained 60 pounds eating lots of McDonald’s. I kept gaining weight after I had her and throughout these last 13 years I have been on several weight loss journeys and lost weight then gained it back. I’ve always told myself my 30s are going to be my best years. So on my 30th birthday when I was at my heaviest at 260 pounds I felt so depressed. I thought for sure by this age I would be a changed person but here I was. I had a picture taken of me that day and after looking at it I just felt disgusted and disappointed. Believe it or not that was only one of the days that shifted things for me. I got on another weight loss journey following a plant based diet but I wasn’t following calorie density in a way that was reflecting in weight loss. I started hitting the gym hard and went three months with no change in my weight. Then I started getting bad shoulder pain due to overuse from the gym so I stopped working out to heal. I used that as an excuse to overindulged and found myself up 20 pounds again. A few months past and I was getting to this point where I just felt like this is it I guess I am meant to be this weight. I’m just not one of those “blessed people “ then one day I’m visiting with my brother and he tells me that he is officially going to lose the weight and he’s trying this all potato diet. He has heard about penn gellet and joe organ and crocks in the kitchen couple. I thought to myself yes I’m going to try this too! Especially since the possibility of losing weight fast was exciting. The next aha moment where I just was done being this way was that if my brother could lose the weight I could lose the weight. He had actually started a week ahead and his results were amazing!! also I was not going to let him pass me up in weight! I was absolutely not going to allow him to weigh less than me. So ultimately being fed up with myself not getting to my goal and keeping the weight off, having someone on this journey with me, and having a non negotiable changed everything and I’m proud to say that today is day 67 and I am 36 pounds down!!

I love your “Choose your own adventure”, it reminds me of the children’s book series that give you options, and alternate endings. I began looking at WFPB meal plans after cancer in 2016. Years of trying to actually ‘eat that way’, and my oncologist saying “you are fat” didn’t make me 100% but hit me, yes hit me last November with the Bright Line Eating book and finally reading Eat to Live. I had both on my shelf, had looked through them and went my merry, fat way. In November my husband’s health (has never been overweight) took a nosedive and searching for some help for him kept leading back to WFPB...He is doing well now, and I lost 45 lbs (oncologist panicked thinking my cancer returned, freaked out and sent me for all kinds of tests, but healthier than ever now!) It takes time to figure out how to eat, how to change a relationship with food, and how to choose an adventure. We can write our own ending. Thanks for your fun, educational and truthful KZread channel. So glad to be a supporter.

Thanks for sharing your personal story of what motivated you both to change your life. I find it very encouraging. Jessica, my name happens to be Jessica too, I also have suffered with depression and anxiety for many years. For me, that makes this weight loss "adventure" more difficult. I first went WFPB in November 2013. I only stuck with it for a few months and then I still didn't eat animal products but I did eat a lot of processed foods. Then this year I got really discouraged and went back to eating dairy and meat. Now I find myself heavier then I've ever been and I deal with chronic pain among other health issues. My mobility is really limited because of pain. So I am back to eating WFPB out of despiration to get my mobility back. Your videos along with Tim Kaufmans, Fat Man Rants, have been very inspiring. Tim is someone who was where I am and now after 6 years of WFPB he is in the best shape of his life. He now runs marathons. And seeing the two of you and the success you've had as really convinced me that if you can do it, so can I! I am so grateful that you decided to share your adventure on You Tube, it has helped me so very much.

I love potatoes so I tried it. It has been 2 months and I have lost 23 pounds now. I still love potatoes because you can fix them so many different ways. I know when I am having a period where I just want to eat something I can get a potato out of the refrig. until the moment passes. The potato seem to be able to help ground me. Jessica, yes it’s emotional. I totally relate. Guys my breaking point is similar. I was weighing in at 280, and my first thought was wow that’s basically 300lbs. I was not happy with myself, the way I looked and felt. I researched a lot of diets knowing that keto and low carb really got me no where over the years. I blamed it on pregnancy weight, but it was two years out and could only blame myself at that point. Through my research, once the idea that oil = fat, and fat + brain = the brain telling the fat to go with the rest of the fat. it all changed the way I saw food. Animal products are saturated fat with no fiber. Therefore I would continue to gain fat or keep fat or stay the same. I tried to be balanced for a long time, but that just led to a slow weight gain. My husband and I are foodies and when we got married, he put an amount of pressure on meals that I wasn’t used to, and even now he hasn’t made this transition with me fully. It’s hard but I knew for me and just like Brian said, you get a certain amount of information that you can’t go back. And like you said Jessica it all aligns a certain way and your left with not waiting for Monday, not waiting for January, not binging one more week, and not making any more excuses. I’ve lost 40 lbs and I’m still working on it. I realized cutting animal products wasn’t enough and that I needed to remove all the saturated fats. I tell people all the time, it’s a slower weight loss process, and I may still be fatter than ever, but I feel the best I have since I was 10 years old. Literally 10. I do delivery’s for Door Dash and Favor, and I climb 3 flights of stairs with lots of bags or groceries with ease now. I am off anxiety and depression meds for the first time since I was about 18. I owe that to not eating death and anxious sick animals, (and dairy/eggs.) We are what we eat. If I was a junk food vegan, yes I’d be fulfilling my foodie ways, but I don’t lose weight. So for me I agree it’s an adventure and you do have to use your machete to uncover things and get to a new place. When you go on adventures you still come home- but you’re completely changed. (Really thinking Frodo right now) you get back to the shire and it’s like wow everything looks different, and I’m not interested in anything here. So the last big notion that I accepted along the way, is the discovery that genes can be turned on or off, and basically that we aren’t doomed to have the same diseases as our family members. It’s such a victory to know that, and just accepting that hey here are some diseases several family members have had and I have to power to turn that off by refusing a lifestyle that gave it to them, really gets me through the day. A lot of people would laugh at vegans who do it for health, but I honestly think it’s beautiful and just as important as the vegans for the animals. After all we are technically animals. It’s “health vegan for love.” WFPB vegan diet/lifestyle forever. 🍋🍓🥬🥦🥝🥗🍵💚🌱💚🌱💚🌱

Good luck to those on their adventure!

I had tried to lose weight for a number of years. In 1997 I was diagnosed with an illness. I then went onto medication. Prior to starting my medication I was somewhere around 180 lbs but soon after I was taking mediation I went up and up and up. In 2017, march I was 247 lbs. I am 5'-10" and now am 58 years old. I decide I would try again, as I had so many times before to lose weight. I started eating less and it slowly came off. Now I weight about 197 lbs. I have a target of 165 lbs. I have for some time eaten a whole foods plant based diet along with fasting. I plan on doing my best to hit my weight loss goal in 3 months. I saw my doctor today and my blood sugar was high. This is because of all the starch I have been eating with beans, potatoes and the like. I am a type 2 diabetic. While I am not a fan of what I am about to do, I know it works for me. I am going to do keto for the next 3 months eating every few days when I need to eat 10 ounces of tri tip. I plan on starting out fasting for 3 days and then on the 4th day eat my tri tip and then again go on another 3 day fast. Once I get to a place where I do not have to eat, then I will go longer on my fast. If you want to check out a good You tube on fasting, watch the fasting fat man. He is down to 243 lbs down from 530 lbs in less than a year doing fasting . He did 150 day long fast and now has just gone about 30 days on his second fast. His goal is to reach 195 lbs by december. That will be 335 lbs of fat loss in a years time. He will likely be a lean as he will be being the extra weight on him is loose skin. Anyway. I hope to by sometime in January be at my target weight and then I am only eating a whole foods plant based diet from there out and staying at between 160 -170 lbs for the rest of my life clearing out my arteries and getting everything working well in my body while exercising. That is my story.

Left my doctors office in October and he told me that if I didnt change my diet and take this seriously that I would be in trouble. He suggested a plant based diet. As I left the doctors office I didnt have a clue where to begin. When I got to my car I pulled up KZread and looked at a couple of channels thinking, "what the heck is this, and no way I'm totally confused." Again I felt failure. Then I clicked on your channel. I must have sat in my car for over an hour watching your videos. One word that I took away from that experience, hope. I'm so thankful and blessed that I found you! You guys ROCK! You are so down to earth and relatable. As I sat and watched your videos I felt at home. I look forward to my new path to health. Congratulations to you guys! Keep up the great recipes!

My Turning point was when a family member became very sick with life threatening cancer. He was the second family member to have gotten this, the other member died at 52 years old. I knew I had to make a change, and after researching for myself, and it took about 9 months, I went totally whole food plant based. It changed my life. I lost about 60 pds, and got off all medication except one for my thyroid. I have more energy than I have had in 20 years. All my blood work came back unbelievable good, so I knew I made the best decision I could ever had made and will never go back. I love your channel and thank you for sharing your adventure with us.

I watch Forks Over Knives and was so inspired by the stories. I have my own Medical struggles and I was frustrated that nothing seemed to be working to get me healthy. I thought, what else do I have to lose? I'm so glad I went Whole Food plant-based! I'm the healthiest I've been in at least a decade. My husband saw that it was working for me and now he has switched his diet as well. Thank you for posting all these wonderful videos! I look forward to them every Sunday and Wednesday!

I'm so glad you made this video, I especially appreciated the bit at the end when you (Jessica) talked about the holidays and how all the junk during the holidays never made you feel as good as eating healthy has. You're so right! I've been fat most of my adult life, I'm now 35. During that time I became vegetarian, lost 150 pounds on a keto diet (impossible to do long term as I was eating roughly 1000 calories per day) then I quit gained 200 lbs, attempted to become vegan following a viewing of Forks Over Knives but depression and huge amounts of stress made a major life change impossible. I went to therapy, changed my entire career path from admin to education, and became an ethical and environmental vegan. I'm now a para-educator at a local elementary school and have been vegan for 9 months. Furthermore, I'm PROUD to be a vegan as it's an ethical standpoint that aligns with my values. Now, I'm FINALLY ready to begin my weight loss adventure and start that Whole Food Plant Based life. Thank you for your generosity in sharing your story and for the encouragement!

I'd tried the whole food, plant-based thing several times and always got discouraged because it felt so limiting. I was doing a bunch of stir frys and salads and that was it. When I looked up WFPB recipes, the blogs were packed with baked sweets and pasta/grain dishes. It was weird that there was relatively little focus on the green veggies. I saw a video from Penn Jillette and something kind of shifted in my head. I bought The Healthspan Solution and it was a revelation! Finally, a book that isn't preachy or full of dumb lingo and the recipes were actually more veggie based than baked stuff. Shortly after I found your channel and your recipes are refreshingly inventive and tasty! Plus you two are a sweet couple and fun to watch. Between the Healthspan book and you two, it finally clicked in my head that the variety of healthy foods can be infinite! Thanks for doing what you do!

I don't have a huge amount of weight to lose, and I have never been bothered by most things like snacking on chips, popcorn, all that junk food, or pizza, but sugar is my problem. It is my biggest issue. Plus, getting older and not being as active, it all makes for feeling pretty lousy. So, I am still a work in progress, and I don't know if I could ever do plant based completely, but I get so much inspiration from you two. I just love watching. Thanks for sharing!

It was 4th of july and I was standing in front of my closet crying because nothing fit and I realized that things have to change. ive been watching your videos for a while. I came across this old one and felt like I wanted to comment. firstly, I admire the honesty and openness between you. you really seem like you've got what it takes for the long haul!! good on both of you!! today, when I watched this, what really spoke to me was Brian explaining the steps involved to get to the place where you are ready to start. Im a programmer, I work on logic and breaking things down to steps is the way I work best. so, yeah, that really caught my attention. great way to explain it Brian! and secondly, 10 years ago I was 335 lbs (Im a 69 year old woman), 5 years ago I was 290 lbs. My SO at the time, encouraged me to attend a 6 month course at the local hospital on weight management. I lost 70 lbs upon completion of the course. I'm now 180,. so Ive lost an entire person lol. I know how to do it. I gained the confidence I needed. and, slow and steady, I am making my way down to my proper weight range. I've saved this video for times when I might need a little extra encouragement. thanks so much for sharing your jou.... adventure!

It's now my time. I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease at the end of my junior year of high school. The medication Remicade put me in remission, but I developed a super rare and incredibly painful skin condition as a side effect. It lasted for years even after switching meds to Entyvio. At the time, I was experiencing a lot of grief for the life I had had before but was at least relieved to be in remission. Things changed when I had a change in insurance and I had to stop taking my medication for a few months. It turns out that when you stop and restart a biologic, you can become immune to that med. After I restarted it, it got easier and easier for my Crohn's to flare until August 2021, when I got a bad flare the day after receiving my dose. I went vegan shortly after, and was aware of how a whole foods plant based diet can be used to treat Crohn's disease, but wasn't ready to take the plunge. Then my medication was switched to Stelara. I didn't feel like my condition was well-controlled with Stelara and it was easy to eat something and accidentally trigger a flare. I'd never experienced food triggers while on previous medications, but it turns out that if the med is working completely, then it makes it so you don't react to your triggers. I noticed that I wouldn't react to my triggers in the first two weeks after receiving a dose but would have issues during weeks 3-8. I tried talking to my gastroenterologist to get my med changed but she didn't think it was a problem as long as I was able to be in remission, even if my diet was restricted. I didn't know what my triggers were for the most part, but knew eating the wrong thing could cause me to flare for a few days. Since I wasn't getting into flares for extended periods, I was always back in remission by the time I got my regular testing done, so my gastroenterologist wasn't worried. I decided to pay close attention to what I ate and figure out which foods were causing symptoms. I read some research papers on how IgG antibodies were related to Crohn's disease triggers as well as papers discussing common Crohn's triggers. As soon as I read that rice was a common trigger, I realized that had been true for me but had been in denial because rice is considered hypoallergenic. Cutting out rice was helpful. Then I realized peanuts were a trigger, as well as any other kind of legume that wasn't cooked at high heat for a certain amount of time (no tofu, no soy milk, no bean flours, no aqufaba, but regularly cooked beans are fine). I also realized I'd had issues with some corn tortillas but wasn't sure if it was corn in general or something about masa harina. Then last month, I didn't take my Stelara dose. I hadn't meant to but just couldn't bring myself to take it. I felt as if I was getting very little benefit from it and wanted to get my covid booster. Stelara affects my ability to respond vaccines and I would've had to wait another month for my booster if I took the Stelara. After that, I didn't experience much change. I did start reacting more to other forms of corn though, so I realized it wasn't just masa harina that was a problem. My breaking point for going whole foods plant based happened Thanksgiving and the weekend after. My family had told me they'd take care of everything for me and that I didn't need to worry, but they messed a lot of things up and I was left with not nearly enough food that day. It was awful. The reason I'd been having difficulty going wfpb was because I was having difficulty figuring out how to cook with all of my dietary restrictions. The fact that my family couldn't made me realize that I needed to take charge. The next day, I realized that white vinegar was a common denominator in a bunch of foods where I couldn't identify what the trigger was. After some Googling, I realized white vinegar is mostly made from corn in the U.S. I love pickled jalapeños and a bunch of other pickled vegetables. My takeaway message was that I really do need to just make everything for myself, even my own pickles. Corn is such a common ingredient; finding processed foods I can have will be near impossible. I luckily found a specialty white vinegar brand that uses sugarcane instead of corn, so I hope can make my own pickles that way. I already can't do gluten due to a different medical condition, and finding vegan foods without gluten, rice, corn, peanuts, or tofu/soy milk/bean flours just seems impossible. I ended up taking advantage of Cyber Monday sales, buying a bunch of silicone baking tools and other supplies to help me cook even when I can't get out of bed (such as a lap desk for the bed and a toaster oven I can use to cook in my bedroom). Most of the these things just came in today so I'm feeling like this is a matter of sink or swim. I need to change. I can't keep living off of just potatoes and store-bought hummus. I need to start making things like oatmeal, breakfast muffins, millet/sorghum grain dishes, noodle dishes with sweet potato noodles, bean salads, etc. I can't keep being scared of this

I had been making gradual changes leading up to the change to plant based eating. When I did make the change ,it was for health reasons. It was like flipping a switch.Straight in .I did it in January. There were a few times I slipped back but I got back in .Lots of takeaways after a death in the family in February but as soon as I was back home I carried on .I now take food with me if I stay at someone else's house.I have lost a stone so far this year.No going back for me.I scour the net for recipes, because I like to cook, and I watch the doctors on you tube. Dr.Berg explains the science involved in weight loss.I am awed by the amount of weight you have lost together.

I am coming from a different place than you, because I am diabetic. I saw a video from Dennis Pollack - Beat Diabetes. He taught me that carbs and sugar were poison to my vital organs. My doctor had put me on diabetic medication and together our goal was to bring my A1C down enough to come off the medication and lose weight. So because of my doctor and Dennis Pollack, since September 9th, I lost 23 pds, brought my A1C down to 5.8, and doc took me off medication. My whole way of eating (no white or wheat flour, no starchy foods and no sugar), has changed. I realize this has to be a life long change if I'm doing to beat diabetics! I have so much respect for both of you. I know it is a struggle, but you have each other to support. Your love and support of each other will help you survive the struggles! I wish you well!

I'm 66 years old, always ate properly, cook from scratch, I just slowly put on about 40 extra pounds. I finally got sick and tired of being sick and tired. Last January I stumbled upon Forks over Knives, but I wasn't ready, as much as I loved the doc. In July, I watched more WFPB docs and it hit me, I even teared up, thinking how in the world do I do this. I really think it was a God thing, because I don't have will power and I love to cook and baked yummy, rich food. I went all in July 4th and I've been 100% since. I've lost 15 pounds, cholesterol down 15 points, down to 177. My heartburn went away, got of the rx for that. I think my BP is lower. I dreaded a family reunion in August, but it went fine, no one said anything. Now, Thanksgiving is coming up, so I'll see how that goes. I struggle with the good, family memories associated with food. It's really sad, like a loss, but not worth jumping ship. I'll probably taste some things, but not over do it, a taste is good enough. BTW, my husband doesn't eat WFPB, but he's very supportive. If I make something I think he'll like, I get him to try it. I never try to convert him. I hope I'll lead by example. I can't really say I feel much better, but I think some of it is mental. Anyway, no regrets!

I was doing well in 2018, I had read Penn Jillette's book early in the year and had stuck to a whole food way of eating. i was my lowest weight since my relationship started with my now husband (8 years strong) but something knocked us off the plan (as life does sometimes) and I regained about 40lbs again. I jumped back on the whole food plant based way of eating because I desperately never want to hit 300lbs again. I started reading the China Study and How Not To Die and rewatched all my favorite health documentaries like Forks over Knives and found some new ones like the Game Changers. I always get motivated before the holidays, so I started again early November. I have stayed vigilant through the holidays and have lost 15 lbs and SO many more inches! i'm down 8 inches in my hips and 4 in my waist already! Watching youtube channels like yours keeps me motivated to stay on track. What I remind myself of is before I confront a problem, it's almost worst in my mind. Once I get started, I realize it's not as bad as my mind made it out to be. Therefore, the longer I wait to start, the more that fear/worry/anxiety takes its toll, so I might as well start. The action and movement of getting started takes on a life of its own, generates it's own energy and reduces fear.
