The Last Ride: Randy Johnson, The 65 Year Old Bronco Riding Cowboy

What’s more to say about 65-year-old bronc rider “Randy Johnson”? That’s a
true cowboy right there! Bronc riding is a classic event of rodeo, it’s a young man's sport and Randy Johnson is the last of a dying breed “Lift and hustle, hang on for just one more try.”

Can't get enough of life eh Randy? I'm over half-way to age 72. I've worked alone most of my life on horseback with a pack string in Idaho's backcountry and wilderness. When I'm out there my bedroll is never dry, I've been scared, hungry, thirsty, windburnt, frozen and wonderin' if I'm lost the rest of the time. I've been bitten, thrown, kicked all to hell, had heatstroke, hyperthermia, frostbite, broken neck, broken back, heart attack, several surgeries and no regrets. I still carry a pocketknife, chocolate bars and fishin' worms in my pocket. And like you, I'm still lookin' to see what's just over the next ridge... ;-)

All the best Randy from a crazy Kiwi horseman from down under. I am only 59 years of age but I love hitting the ground after being bucked off a horse because I feel so alive upon impacting with the ground plus its good fun. Lift and hustle, hang on for just one more try is essentially what life is all about. Top man Randy Johnson.

Brought a warm feeling to my heart having seen these Santa Ynez Valley cowboys, have a lot of family history with ranching here and grew up on 50 acres in Los Olivos every summer at my grandmas old adobe ranch style house. It really is one of my favorite places on this planet. George Chamberlain was my pops stepdad. If you get the chance, look him up, you may be surprised with what you find. George Chamberlain and Bobby Tanner were the men who created the 20 mule team. Rode through the streets of D.C. and traveled all over. Very proud of the upbringing I had and how lucky I am to have the Valley feel like home.

Meeting Randy Johnson is a memorable experience. Getting to know him and the memories will never fade. The R Bar D was in the Snake River Canyon, south of the Hoback, WY. The whole ranch had frontage on that beautiful river. Yet after a whole winter and two thirds the way through calving. A bad case of cabin fever makes you want to go to town. Like many ranches anything mechanical was probably not working, but our horses were always working. Most of the time we were snowed in. So we kept our vehicles in a barn about 3-4 miles away. I heard Hank Williams Jr was coming to the Cowboy Bar in Jackson. Seemed unlikely at the top of his game he would come to such a small venue. I had seen Waylon Jennings there the year before, so I was determined to go. The other cowboy, Gary Stewart would cover me while I was gone. I long trotted my horse to my Olds Delta 88 hoping it would start. At the Cowboy Bar there was this rowdy cowboy sitting at a table right in front of Hank. After every song he would stand and holler out a request. He was drinking enough where he got to laying his head on his arms on the table. Next he slowly slid under the table and there he lay. I made it back to my horse and tightened the cinch. Long trotted standing in the stirrups the whole way back. The seat was way too cold! I worked the rest of the night checking the first calf heifers and probably pulled 2 or 3, I don’t recall now. Sometime later the Cattle Company manager, Chuck Hamilton was able to make it in. He brought a bunch of Jackson Hole newspapers for us to read. On the front page of a recent one was a picture of the cowboy under the table. Headline, “A cowboy who had too much fun at the Hank Jr concert... In all fairness, no one ever said ranch work was easy and only 40 hours a week. Six 10-12 hour days easily. Closer to a 100 hours at calving time. Doesn’t take much alcohol along with exhaustion to pass out. Later on, Chuck said he had just hired someone. The guy shows up and it was the guy that was under the table. That began a wild ride and friendship with Randy Johnson...

May The Good Lord keep you safe in the saddle for as long as you desire and may each moment be a cherished one. For my part, at 52, as much as I love horseback riding (see my post here), having my body jolted that much on purpose just isn't my thing. :-) I've been bucked a few times in some not so safe situations and had a horse rear up and land on my legs, that'll suffice.

I’ve ridden a few horses that bucked, but never a bucking horse! I have upmost respect for those brave enough to do so.
