‘The Last of Us’ Stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey on Their Post-Apocalyptic Chemistry
Фильм және анимация
As the launch of highly-anticipated video-game adaptation ‘The Last of Us’ looms, stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey talk to Rotten Tomatoes about their bond in the new series. Both are veterans of HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones,’ but did not share scenes in the wildly popular fantasy series. Pascal also stars in Disney+ sci-fi hit ‘The Mandalorian,’ which he admits is a bit of a ‘double-dip’ along with his role as Joel in ‘The Last of Us’ in terms of epic-fantasy casting fortune. Their costars Gabriel Luna (who plays Tommy), Anna Torv (Tess), and Merle Dandridge (Marlene), and series creators Neil Druckmann of game developer Naughty Dog and Craig Mazin (creator of HBO’s acclaimed ‘Chernobyl’) offer even more backstory on creating the network’s next big genre favorite.

While I do agree - she's doing a good job all in all - I do have some small pet peeves about her behavior. For example, when she asks a question from Neil, she uses a commanding sentence structure: "Talk about this and that" without saying "could you" for example. I don't understand why she doesn't use a more polite language. She doesn't sound respectful that way and I really feel she should show more respect to the people she's interviewing. I also find it annoying how she occasionally talks about herself instead of trying to represent a wider audience in these conversations.

Great Interview! Just one addition: The Actors who play Joel and Ellie are not “voice actors” but just “actors” . They are not standing in a studio and reading the lines . They go to a set act with their faces and their body’s and that gets transferred to the game. It’s just a minor thing but I think it understates the work these people have done. After all no one would call an actor a “Body Performer”

Neil absolutely nailed why making this game into a show is NOT a terrible or unnecessary thing like a lot of us have said. The fact that, purely by virtue of the medium and the story, you're kinda "stuck" playing as Joel and Ellie and you never get to see much of anything outside of their experiences, but in the show you can go most anywhere is proof alone. It's gonna be fantastic getting to see Ellie's EARLY backstory, to see more of Marlene's story, more of Bill's story, more of David's story (probably my favourite uninfected threat of the whole series, mostly due to the quiet menace Nolan North brought), getting to see so much more of even just that WORLD, it's all going to be great. And the casting that I've seen so far could not be better.

That was a really great interview! I liked hearing that Pedro had watched playthroughs, so he was familiar with the story, that Gabriel had played the game and knew and loved it. But most exciting was learning that Craig had played it and loved it way back when, so he KNEW it. I always believed in him after seeing Chernobyl, but this cemented it for me.

I kind of wish the show just released all 9 episodes so I can binge watch all of them but at the same time I am kind of happy that they decided to release it once a week, the anticipation grows even more and that what I always loved about shows that release an episode once a week, makes you appreciate the show even more in the long run and gives you some time to breathe and take it all in.

This interviewer is amazing. Kept me captivated and laughing the whole time. She’s truly a gem. ❤
It seems like the casting was about how the actors SOUND. Some of them don't look very accurate, but they sound just like the characters in the game. I'm shocked how similar Gabriel sounds like Tommy! Even Pedro, Bela and Anna (Merle, obviously) sound like their characters. Awesome!
I like how its easier for them to talk about the series giving the fact that the story/plot of the last of us is already made. As for most interviews previewing a show or movie it's very limited.

The Sara scene in the game also gets more powerful because the player has actually controlled her and has connected to her on a deeper level, than if she had just been a character important to Joel. For the show to replicate that, it will be important to have scenes with Sara on her own early on in the episode(s), so we get to bond with her as a living, breathing person, not just Joel's daughter.

Have to agree. That scene.... it broke me, in ways that very few moments in any form or media ever has. I'm also very curious on how they handle Tess and her.... moment. If they get that right, the show will succeed.
I really appreciate that they aren't trying to replicate the connections felt in the game because they can acknowledge that it's a different medium; I feel like that'll help them make the most of this new retelling of the story
I've never heard Pascal's normal speaking voice and I gotta say, he sounds VERY similar to Troy Baker both as himself and as Joel.

Finally an interviewer with taste and knowledge of her industry and passions
After having watched the show, it's always jarring to hear them speak in their actual accents. Not just Bella, obviously, but also Pedro. But wow, their performances are phenomenal!
7:23 So I take it we are actually going to finally find out what happened to Anna and the circumstances surrounding her death. It’s been hinted at since American Dreams that there was a big reason for her death, “just know that she gave up *everything* to save *you”.*
I was concerned early on about casting and whether all the characters will be done justice, but it's looking better and better the more I see. The environment, practical effects, etc. The voices they've shown so far are amazing. Just one thing...the vines on those cars, what happened there? 🤔😅
For a massive fan of the game like me, im so relieved that everything waited untill Neil had the right partner (meaning craig) to bring this story to live action. I know they talked about a movie back when they did one night live and then it didnt happen. Im so happy they waited for the right people and the right time to do this right.
I hope this show gets renewed - so we can see what Joel and Ellie were doing between the 1st and 2nd game. This franchise is awesome!

What amazes me as a child of the 80s is how my favorite song of basically any era "Take On Me" got into my later favorite ever video game "LOU". Then my hands down pick for best series ever "Game Of Thrones" has two of it's best characters, become Joel & Ellie. It's like decades apart all my favorite entertainment had a love child, By the way their version of "Take On Me" is a stand-alone work of art in its own right and adds to the emotions in the series so intrinsically no other song could have done it. 100% bullseye on everything in my book.
