My only complaint is how much they changed the lighting in Bill's town. I always remember it being bathed in a redish sunset and standing out as a cozy break from the rest of the games bleakness. Now it just looks like a kind of gloomy town like the rest

Just looking, the textures, models, and all visuals have improved by a lot, but they took a dive in the art direction. As a commercial photo / video person, The new footage looks like log or raw video rather than color graded cinematic imagery. The scorching red hue of bill’s town, and the blue hues at the start, each represented different moods that aided in the story. The new look is just too clinical to me.

yeah I agree with this one, the artstyle in the original game was great (even tho I prefer the look of the remake) it made places that were 'relaxing' more relaxing and places that were stressful extremely oppressive (like the sewers or the collapsed towers)

The thing I like about the remake is that older characters's model actually feel older and you can see the highlight on the amount of stress they have suffered like the bags under their eyes, they are somewhat skinnier and feel more tired.

I think collectibles being a physical object Joel picks up adds a lot more than just immersion, it makes the scene where Joel rejects the photo of Sarah that Tommy offers him all the more powerful because through the whole game, Joel has been pocketing every trinket and doodad he comes across, but instead of thoughtlessly pocketing the photo, he hands it back to Tommy. This makes the scene where Ellie hands Joel the photo all the stronger, because he finally accepts this memory for all of the joy and pain it brings him. wish that Naughty Dog focused on these elements of storytelling more than traditional cinematic storytelling.

One of my favorite subtle details is how the cars now have break-able windows and detailed interiors. That combined with the new physics object make combat much more gritty, when you have glass from the cars flying off as it's shot, objects in the environment flying all over the place when a bomb is set off.

I can't decide which version I like better. Joel and the other gal at the beginning of Chapter 1 now look their age, which is great, but at the same time, the characters' facial expressions have changed. Where Joel once looked determined, he now looks weary. Where Ellie once looked feisty, she now looks vulnerable. It's not worse, it's just ... different. Much of the background art is improved, but a few of the original environments still seem preferable. For example, I was saddened but also chuckled when I noticed that they'd removed Pluto from a poster in Joel's daughter's room. I liked the scummy water of the original, but I also like the brackish water of the remake. I think both versions are flavours worth enjoying. I think I'll buy a copy of the new version in another month or two when it's released for PC and enjoy the excuse for a replay.

@pedro10a1 Disgustingly different? No. Just made actually human looking. They looked way too cartoony and perfect on PS3, they seemed way more flat than the environments surrounding them. They've made skin stretch more realistically. They've added detailed skin textures with wrinkles and pores. There is some subtlety in facial animations that was totally lost in the original that have been brought out and add depth to the performances. Joel actually looks his age and has patches of grey in his hair. If they had upgraded everything else in this game but kept the faces proportionally identical with the new lighting, subsurface scattering, and textures, they would look awful. When the original game came out in 2013 I thought it was one of the most realistic games I'd ever seen. I played it again very recently, and I'm playing the remake now. The faces have aged noticeably poorly in the original. Love it to death, but it sure was released on now 16 year old hardware at the tail end of its lifespan

Great comparison, I really appreciate the work they put into this remake. Though I was noticing around one out of five examples I preferred the tone of the Remastered original. Maybe it's the way it was captured, but a lot of times the remake feels washed out or less cinematic in color tone. A few examples: 2:50, 5:18 (Ellie is pink), 13:45 (That "excessive red and yellow light" made that entrance to the town for me). That all said, I'm looking forward to trying it out for myself when the price drops.

I'm of the same mind, I feel like that they traded some artistic decision (in terms of lighting, character designs etc) for realism, or like how they traded the worn down UI look for a cleaner one. Over all I think the remake looks FANTASTIC, but at the same time I wonder if the devs got a little too carried away with how good it looks vs how the game should "feel." This game's graphics were way ahead of its time. Compare it with the most games from that era and you'll understand. Naughty dog never disappoints us. Their games are all phenomenal.

Can't really agree with that sentiment. Not to be a PC snob but games on PCs were doing some amazing stuff back in 2013 and the gap back then between consoles and PCs were way too big for console games compete in the graphics department. However the facial animations and overall acting were top notch stuff for its time that's for sure.

The graphical improvements look great, but as I've beaten both original and remaster, I just can't justify paying full dollar for this. I could see myself buying it if it drops to around 20 bucks, but I don't see that happening soon. For new players though, this seems like the definitive way to experience this masterpiece.

Once part two releases next month, they could release a deluxe version like resident evil 8 that included biohazard 7. Sony can have a complete bundle for 90, like re8 village, so the last of us part one could be 20 bucks worth within the pricing point of a deluxe edition.

I've played remastered on the ps4 twice now, and I just started playing part 1 on the ps5 last night. I actually cried because of how amazing and detailed it looked. I just felt like I could see everything better, and I was seeing some details for the first time. I feel so much more immersed. The physics of Joel's backpack moving as he walks/runs, the way he puts his arm up for cover if he stands under falling water (I don't remember if he does that in remastered...), the way he actually picks up objects instead of swiping his hand over them... I'm so glad I bought part 1, it's so worth it and feels like a totally different game. This comparison was crazy to see.

I'm waiting for the price to drop but I will admit that I was surprised with how much better this remake looks. I wish it was not remade shot-for-shot and included some expanded content or gameplay since PS5 owners can already play Remastered through backwards compatibility - but it looks incredible and some of the AI adjustments to the enemies will probably make my first play through much more fun than Remastered. At least some of the amazing AI and gameplay from Part 2 is coming to Part 1, even if it's arguably not enough.

In reality they've probably come to the conclusion that they have already remade about 70% of the assets and characters while developing Part II (from flashbacks etc.) and thought that it probably wasn't the most challenging undertaking to retrofit most of it back into the Part I story. You can see it in the destroyed vehicles that they asset dropped into the new game too, they are actually not as well designed or cleverly integrated into the scenes as the original vehicles. Some of the 'upgrade' looks out of place because of it. It's not their original vision at all.

Color is a slider on many 3d/editing software that has a less affects on CPU/GPU computations. Many games had darker colors oven before ps3 era. Heavy computational tasks such as lighting, particle effects, model polycounts etc are the real issues for hardware. The original/remaster colors gave TLOU a true sense of uniqueness when it came to separating it from many other cliché post apocalyptic medias. A sense of a brighter day in the chaos of a broken world. *Hope.* Now its all just gloomy. TLOU kind of reminded me a bit of Mad Max Fury road. Well they have to adapt and tie in the attitude between parts 1 & 2. We saw what a shock it was to our system to go from a game that was dark but had an underlying hope in the madness and dreariness of that world to something that was just dark. Nostalgia can be a blessing but if held on too tightly can be a curse. I mean look at political issues today and you can see the dangers of holding onto the past in an unhealthy way. To want to hold the game industry to such a standard would kill it eventually as it wouldn't hold up to the modern games. I will have all my love and nostalgia for my OG games but I'm not going to demand they stay the same in every way. That's not how life or society works. Edited to add: Not coming at you though, genuinely I am not, but there are amazing case studies into nostalgia and the damaging effects they can have or how the human brain is wired to hold onto it. It's actually really fascinating. I won't say nostalgia is bad but it should be used within reason. Nor will I tell you that we have to agree. We're both our own people and entitled to our emotions.

One thing that I imagined them doing in the remake that didn’t happen was expanding the gameplay areas. Remember how in the original game, floors in buildings are randomly blocked off by debris, and many areas are made inaccessible by wires. With the increased power of the PS5, they could’ve easily expanded the gameplay areas by making these areas accessible. This could’ve made the game feel more open ended. Sad that they didn’t do it.

@@darthmatoro I think on one hand it's nice that the visuals are consistent with part 2, but it kind of makes sense thematically for the first one to feel brighter and more vibrant, in my opinion. Neil Druckmann explicitly said that the first game is about "love", and part 2 is about "hate". To me the difference in colour grading makes that a lot more apparent, and makes TLOU2 feel so much grittier and sadder in contrast. Like you can feel the shift between the way that 14 year old Ellie sees the world vs 19 year old Ellie after all the grief and trauma.

It took a while for me to adjust to the character’s new facial graphics, as they look so different in comparison to the original versions, but I’ve grown to really appreciate how much more expressive and detailed they are. If I could have kept one thing unchanged (just enhanced), in the original TLoU, the runner’s eyes used to look forced into different directions. Presumably the cordyceps was pushing the eyes of the infected out of their sockets. I thought this was a really creepy detail I wish had been carried over into the remake.

But those were unrealistic and not conducive to the tone or environment design. Areas that look dark and bleak are so because 90% of the time you're spending in dark, dim environments where warm, vibrant tone makes no sense. @@justmega9569 I don't think that's really the case, you know, compared to the actual plot that attracted most folks in addition to fun or brutal gameplay. Regardless, standards have obviously been raised since then and the lighting doesn't harm the game nearly as much as you think it does- if anything it makes the experience all the more compelling and, to use the ever over used word, "inmersive". Regardless, we're past thelat era of jarring uncanny Valley look of character models and can relate to them/ read their mannerisms and characterisations a whole lot better subsequently making them more relatable. Such little nuance can't be understated in how essential it is, especially when viewing a game through a realistic vein a decade late; things aiming for realism don't necessarily age that well, especially when the tech exists to make it happen. Anyone remotely familiar with modern day ND knows they prixe themselves of fidelity prowess and pushing the PlayStation hardware as hard as it can, hence why this exists and, in my opinion, the defining version if the game from start to finish. The remaster was arguably unnecessary and offered far less in the grand scheme of things.

I love seeing the various improvements to the game, it’s like buying a UHD 4K Blu-ray of an older movie and being able to see all the details and enjoying it again. I don’t get the argument that discounts should be made for people who own the ps4 version, or that this price for the re-remaster is to high. It’s made for crazy people like me who are ok with buying something multiple times just to get small or huge improvements. Or for those who’ve never played if ofc. It's not a new game, it's not a complete overhaul to such an extent that it's a new game like FFVIIR, it's a remake a rerelease. Sony is already upcharging their games to $70 but on top of that, a remake like this shouldn't be the full price as it's not a new game. Destroy All Humans 1 & 2, Spyro Reignited, Resident Evil 2 & 3, all released for $40. All are remakes of much older games and added as much if not more. Why give Sony special treatment? Even Activision, ACTIVISION, lowered the price of COD MW Remastered to $30 since it didn't have multiplayer, and that game added just as much.
