Poe did the right thing. If he didn't destroy that dreadnought, it would have annihilated the rebel fleet immediatly with its planet-killers weapons. Poe saved everyone and it was worth the price. As for the bombers pilots, they were soldiers and knew the risks and knew they could die at any time and any moment. But if you really want someone to blame for their death, there's someone : the Resistance itself. If they didn't replace the fast and super-effective Y-Wing bombers for those useless, slow and nonsensical pieces of junk, half of those pilots, if not more, would still be alive.

The Resistance wasn't as well funded as the old Rebellion was. The New Republic didn't give a shit about the First Order and didn't think they were much of a threat. Those slow old bombers were all they could really afford

@@miniking3350 No, the point was the writers trying to make Po look hot-headed and impulsive when that is NOT what just happened. Po was doing the best he could, using mediocre equipment while being under enormous pressure to perform. Also, those bombers are shit. They are very large, very slow and very poorly-armored. Debris from and exploding TIE fighter takes out THREE of them. Leia tells Po to break off his attack and return to the fleet immediately after she is told by Po that "these things (dreadnoughts) are fleet killers!" If Po had not taken out the dreadnought right then and there, the fully armed and operational dreadnought would have simply followed Po back to Rebel fleet and wiped it out. What did Leia think was going to happen? Also, what were the bombers going to be used FOR if not to destroy the dreadnought? Did Leia and Holdo not know this? So anyway, after Po tells Leia that he took out the dreadnought, Leia says something stupid, like "but at what cost?" Oh . . . I don't know, about the cost you would expect when you send paper-thin bombers against a fleet-killer dreadnought. Did Leia and Holdo have a better plan to minimize the loss of life? If so, why didn't they tell that plan to Po? The writing in this movie is shit.

I love how dead serious her tone of voice is when she says he's demoted.

Hold on, the movie started with the bombers in position and everybody knew the plan, how could she not know what Poe would do? Leia was in command, She could have turned those bombers around with a word. This makes her look like she wanted the attack to go ahead but wanted Poe to take the blame if it went wrong.

Poe didn't listen to Leia when Leia wanted him to come back, so he got demoted, he turned off his communication device and destroyed the dreadnaughts weapons, Leia didn't want him to destroy their weapons

@@emreva1357 Stating a counter point to your argument is not attacking you, at no point did i say anything insulting. Leia gives the order to disengage before the bombing run starts. Poe disobeys her by continuing to attack, but so do the bombers. Either the bombers also chose to disobey Leia (making them equally responsible for their own deaths) or Leia failed to communicate her orders to anyone but Poe (making Leia a terrible leader). Either way you look at it, Poe is not the only one culpable here.

Fun fact Leia could have just called the bombers to return to the fleet because if poe would have stayed alone he also would have came back

1:10 I honestly feel the sequel characters are often being like fans. Luke goes to face Kylo Ren and Finn wants to be there with him (though it's more likely cuz Ren sliced his back in the previous movie). Few other moments are Ren trying to be like Vader, Rey and Finn realise they stole the Millennium Falcon and meet Han and Chewie, when Han dies, Rey holding the lightsaber out to Luke as well as Luke refusing to take on the First Order with just a laser sword, Rey on the Falcon's gun turret "Whoa! I like this!", Rey, Finn and Poe meeting Lando, Rey and Finn's reaction when they think Chewie's dead (like they accidentally killed him in a video game), Poe when Lando and Chewie show up with a massive fleet to fight the Final Order and other moments I can't think of at the moment. Though I guess Chewie does too when Han dies and then when Leia dies.

Leia really taught Poe when she blasted him with the stun gun.

“Where did those crystal critters go?” FINN there is a giant hole right behind you!!! I know the plots says that they escaped through the tunnels but I’m sure someone would’ve thought that they went out the big hole in the wall.

Idk why Poe is getting belittled here? If they left that dreadnaught alone they would’ve all died. He literally saved them.

The only reason thats true is because of the hyperspace tracking the FO uses. Poe gets demoted here because Leia is not yet aware they can be tracked through Hyperspace. Without the tracking what Poe does is wasteful, as they could just bail and be in good shape with minimal loses. It's seen as excessive to expend an entire bomber fleet to take out one Dreadnought. Once it's revealed that the FO is tracking through lightspeed the choice is retroactively a good one, because the Dreadnought would have taken the fleet out. But Poe couldn't have possibly known that, thus he wasted an entire bomber fleet and several A Wings for, what was at the time, a bad reason. Thats why he gets demoted.

ConnorPugs PRTeam Sure. Was definitely a successful operation if you look at it like that. But I don’t think that’s where Leia is coming from. They don’t have a lot of ships. Poe losses the entire bomber fleet which was probably a significant portion of the fighter fleet to begin with. If they had more resources and ships I’d agree with you 100% but they don’t and Leia wants to conserve resources. It’s understandable why she demoted him, even if it’s arguable if it was a good or bad decision.

Leia has literally just witnessed everyone in her life die. Ackbar, Han, Holdo, she can feel Luke won't last longer, not to mention her son. She knows that if something happens to her there will be no more leaders, she needs Poe to learn to step up

Honestly Poe's plan was better at disabling the first order's tracking system for them to escape instead of just flying in totally defenseless ships for them to shoot out the sky. And again they could'eve told him it was need to know Luke was a pilot younger and at his rank they still trusted him plans.

So Poes getting reprimanded for the attack that got a few bombers killed vs not doing anything which would’ve gotten the entire fleet killed by the dreadnought. And Leia and Holdo are being presented as being in the right on this. God this movie…

Am I missing something? It seems like a success overall on the mission, so why would he get demoted for clearing out the surface cannons and letting the bombers do the work?

I will say I take both sides reasonable and correct. Poe ignored order and caused half of the fleet to be destroyed and it barely damaged the first order so yeah Leia went too easy with a slap, demotion and a few burns. But better to lose half a fleet than the entire crew, since if he obeyed or if the fleet was fully destroyed, the hyperspace would have eradicated them

I mean no disrespect to Carrie Fisher at all. But Leia is just awful in this movie. She treats Poe like absolute garbage in this film. Yes, I understand that Poe went against her orders at the beginning of the film. But he actually accomplished something by doing that. Yet, she thanks him by slapping him in the face and demoting him. Later on, when she comes out of her coma, instead of telling Poe that they needed to talk, she just shoots him in the chest. Why the fuck was that moment necessary? Sure, Leia eventually makes Poe the leader of the Resistance at the end of the film. But that doesn’t excuse how awful she treated him earlier. Don’t even get me started on the Leia flying through space scene. Even for a movie, there’s no logical way she’d still be breathing after getting sucked into space

Leia said she was more interested in protecting the light that seeming like a hero, first of all. And the lost of half of the transports that were going to Crait was Poe's fault. If he hadn't acted behind Holdo's back, the First Order would've never find out about her plan of sneaking in front of their noses. Besides, Poe's plan was really stupid, of course Finn and Rose were gonna get caught inside Snoke's Star Destroyer for the Force sake!!! Leia was really soft with him, in my opinion. He should have been the one to stay on the cruiser while Holdo and the rebels escaped.

You do realize that that was poe's fault, right? He sent finn and rose on a suicide mission, and the codebreaker they got ended up betraying them and telling the first order about the transports. This was in no way holdo's fault, if poe had sat the fuck down, it would've gone flawlessly

He didn't even want to know what the plan was, just that they even had one at all. Literally just saying "yes, we have a plan" would probably be enough for Poe to not send Finn and Rose on a pointless C plot

Why does Poe get chastised for doing the right thing? Sure, he lost the bombing fleet, but the bombers did their job to a 'T', despite being made of f&*king paper. Honestly, I would love to see a scenario where the bombers are successful without being absolutely wiped out or destroyed. I don't see how any of them could've possibly survived unless the enemy is literally useless.

Here, the resistance could only flee. In the first place the destruction of the enemy ship was not necessary if the latter was sufficiently distracted to allow the last resistance to escape from D'Qar. Poe was ordered to return with the bomber squadron and preferred to engage in combat at a time when combat should have been avoided in order to keep as many left as possible alive.

Better get rid of this weapon of mass destruction now than let it wreck them afterwards when they had no fighters or bombers left after Kylo nukes the hangar bay. No matter how you try to argue it, Poe was in the right, and he still gets chastised for his success. And Poe still succeeds in killing this thing despite the bomber fleet being utterly useless and made of tissue paper. FML

The resistance must fight when the time is for combat, there, the time is for survival. Leia thereafter, when Kylo Ren attacks the ship, will allow Poe to attack the First Order with his X-Wing.

@@sangokus6478 But Kylo would've wasted all of the ships and they would be screwed. Do you remember what happened in this turd of a film? Then second Leia gave Poe permission to fight, all their small ships were annihilated by Kylo the second Poe tried to reach the hangar. The entire Rebel fleet would still be fleeing anyway, whether or not they knew the First Order could track them. If they hadn't destroyed the Dreadnaught, not only would IT and the three other star destroyers have followed them, but they would be joined by three more star destroyers AND Snokes ship, and their odds of survival would be zero. The Dreadnaught would've picked them off when they were trying to flee and were low on fuel.

At the time, destroying the ship was unnecessary as they were about to escape, and The First Order (according to the resistance) could not have followed them. So in the script, Poe was right, but in reality, since he didn't know the ship could follow them, he was wrong at the time. I am not English so I can be misunderstood.

For all of you guys criticizing Leia, she wanted to teach him a valuable lesson. That bombing plan went wrong in so many ways and they had to depend on one person to activate the bombs. He needed to learn that there are times when you have to retreat, which he did learn later on in the film.

The bombing plan went wrong because of reasons that were outside of Poe's control. Like the fact that these crappy bombers are the worst vehicles I've ever seen in Star Wars. They are made of paper and move slow as hell.

The bombing plan went wrong because the bombers are crap. Debris from an exploding TIE fighter destroys three of them. Then, the last surviving bomber makes it all the way to the dreadnought and takes several direct hits along the way without exploding. So now, the bombers are NOT crap. This is just the awful way that Rian Johnson writes. He wanted the dramatic build-up, he wanted to blow up the dreadnought, he wanted the thrill of victory but he didn't want to do any of the work it took to get to that point. So whenever it looks like one side is getting too much of an advantage, he changes the rules of the universe to keep the scene from ending too quickly. That is very poor writing. Leia's reasons for telling Po to return to the fleet are never explained. Po is already there, WITH bombers, ready to attack the dreadnought. What else were the bombers FOR, if not to attack the dreadnought? Didn't Leia and Holdo approve of this plan? Did they have another plan that would have reduced the loss of life? If they did, then isn't it their fault for not telling this plan to Po?

Especially bad since POE DIDNT NEED TO COME BACK!! Rebel Starcraft (let alone Resistance Starcraft which is supposed to be more advanced), already had integrated hyperdrives in their X-wings. The Raddus and her escorts could have taken off when rendezvoused with Poe later (this explicitly happens in ESB; Luke could go to Dagobah and then Bespin because his X-wing had its own hyperdrive and didn’t need a cruiser to travel lightspeed)

it could work!!!

Poe’s arc was one of the few things I appreciated from The Last Jedi

Thedoom turtle for me it did, wanting to become that desperate leader yet he didn’t know how to lead a battle. He was selfish in the beginning and only cared about winning. At the end during the Battle of Crait, he calls off the ground invasion because he knows that his comrades are going to get killed. This tells us that he has learned his lesson and that he has completed his character development.

Did she think it was a good idea to humiliate her best pilot in public? A good superior/boss does that in private. Did she treat the X-wing pilots on Hoth this way? If it was the military, she would be prosecuted according to the UCMJ. Have any of you Disney dweebs served? Fired a real weapon? Run a half mile and not die? OP is correct.

so just gonna throw this out there, if poe hadnt taken the dreadnaught out, it would be one of the ships thatll be tailing them in oh about 30 seconds.......and GUESS WHAT the dreadnaughts guns dont magically arc like the cannons on snokes ship......they shoot in a straight fucking line.

He's a brilliant warrior and a skilled pilot. He did squander the bombing fleet.

It assassinated Luke's character, has a slow as hell space chase that made no sense, a b plot that could be cut from the film and have nothing change, the hyperspace suicude bomb broke hyperspace, stealing entire shots/scenarios from episode 5 and 6, and finally could be skiped sense these Frankenstein of a trilogy would still function without it. Also the hyperspace tracker and ship fuel is stupid.

@@joshuawillis602 Yes he is. Leia shoots him. It's ironic that Crait was Poe's plan all along. He just didn't know about the existence of the base. He and Holdo would have gotten along pretty well, if she had decided to cooperate with... you know, the one who just saved her life by following his guts. Poe doesn't lack any strategic competence as the plot demonstrates very early on.

@@ELMQ no he isn’t. Stunning him doesn’t mean he was a villain. While he’s a good leader he in fact lacked a strategic mind at the beginning of the film. What he did was not strategic at all. You even admit this by saying he went with his gut. Going by your gut is not strategic. You are correct though that Holdo could’ve been more cooperative but she wasn’t completely wrong in being confidential. While Poe is an amazing pilot he was too impulsive. Saying he saved her life is debatable. They had more options that didn’t involve losing all their bombers

In Poe's defense, this could have been avoided with more nimble Y wings firing off a volley of proton torpedoes to the bridge from a distance rather than a squadron of slow bombers getting up close.

That would be too risky as the defenses would destroy them before they could get close. Having bombers approaching while the smaller craft take out defenses is a better strategy

@@joshuawillis602 The defense was a few lasers that Poe 1 tapped before the star fortress's even got close. Ties might still have been a problem but atleast the y wings wouldn't be easy pickings for the ties, vs the SF-17's which were so horrendously engineered one exploding cause multiple of them to explode from the shrapnel

Imagine the shitstorm that would happen if Poe Slapped Rose for doing something wrong, but it's ok for a women to hit a man. This seemed totally out of character for Leia too, because she was always strong willed, but that doesn't mean that you have the right to go around slapping people. A verbal scolding would have been more effective and more in line with the character.

Except that there the resistance was only to flee. In the first place the destruction of the enemy ship was not necessary if the latter was sufficiently distracted to allow the last resistance to escape. Poe was ordered to return with the bomber squadron and preferred to engage in combat at a time when combat should have been avoided in order to keep as many left as possible alive.

@@sangokus6478 While true, do not forget that this movie introduced a little thing called the hyperspace tracker. Even if Poe had pulled everyone back, and escaped, then the dreadnought would’ve just followed them, and attacked-no, destroyed them in an instant. Stupid or not, Poe actually saved the Resistance (again!) by pushing to destroy the dreadnought. Remember, a FO dreadnought is a, quote "Fleet killer”. Maybe your argument would have a leg to stand on if the Resistance fleet was being attacked by only regular Resurgent star destroyers, and not something as massive and dangerous as a FO dreadnought, but they are not. A dreadnought is what is attacking the Resistance in the movie, And there is hyperspace tracking, so please make sure to factor that in. I don’t care if the Resistance doesn’t know about the tracker. We, the audience know about the tracker, and so we will include it when talking about this battle. I’m sorry if you don’t like including the tracker in debates about space battles in TLJ, but i’m not the one who introduced it as a plot point.

@@8158bolga In the end, Poe will have been right, but Poe, Finn, Holdo or Leia were not aware of the tracker. They could have escaped without risking the survival of the resistance because of these small bombers. As long as Poe didn't know about the tracker, Leia's reaction is justifiable.

Leia:what the hell Poe? Why did you attack? You killed our bombers Poe: the ship was gonna get blown up by that ship in a short amount of time, so attacked that ship to save our main forces, and it’s not my fault we have illogically slow bombers. Leia: i meant why did you attacked them on your own orders instead of mine. Now we lost all our bombers and most of our fleet by the tie fighters. Poe: Let’s say if I did follow your order. You probably wouldn’t let me take out the ships guns so the bombers won’t have an opening. How would you take out the tie fighters? Let’s be realistic there’s no way we can take them out while the tie fighters who out number us 50 to 1 so how would we win. Leia: your demoted

And the reason why Leia scolded him to begin with was to teach him the difference between being a hero and a leader. In war, you have to analyze the situation and learn to think one step ahead of the enemy all the time. Even though his intentions were good, Poe was careless in the beginning.

@@rachet87 nobody knew the first order had developed hyperspace tracking, if leia had known already she would've been all for killing the dreadnought, but she was still right that there are things that cannot be solved by jumping in an x wing and blowing something up (although that's star wars in a nutshell lol) and honestly, I think Poe was still being a massive dumbass, cause at the time there was no reason given for him to destroy the dreadnought right then and there, so he needlessly sacrificed the entire bombing fleet and several experienced pilots. That's what was on Leia's mind when she demoted him

The Dreadnaught was capable of destroying them in the beginning but the Resistance could flee before that happened. The problem is the First order had tracking and they all would have been destroyed then if Poe hadn't taken it down.

We see the dreadnought for the first time when it jumps out of hyperspace at the beginning of the movie. The dreadnought was too far away from the Rebel fleet to engage it. If Po hadn't destroyed it, it would have simply followed Po back to the fleet and wiped it out.
