The Last Day Of The Volcano & Volcanologist Predicts The Future of Reykjanes - Part I
In the latest update report on the recent volcanic eruption, reporters Alina Maurer and Art Bicnick make their way to the newest place of danger from the volcano. This week, a berm just one kilometre away from the Svartsengi Power Plant and the Blue Lagoon overflowed with lava, which slowly made its way closer to crucial infrastructure. Fire departments from all over the country were on-site fighting the lava streams with cold water to lower the flow speed. This was the first time water was used to control lava flow since the 1973 Heimaey eruption in the Westman Islands!
They also talk to our special guest - one of Iceland's leading volcanologists and petrologists, professor Þorvaldur Þórðarson from the Faculty of Earth Sciences at the University of Iceland. He has studied Icelandic volcanoes for nearly 40 years. Þorvaldur has been one of the most prominent voices in Icelandic media since the volcanic activity on the Reykjanes peninsula picked up in 2021.
You can watch Part 2 of our interview with Þorvaldur in next week's episode on Saturday! 🌋

I always enjoy listening to the professor. He has a gift to communicating highly complex ideas into understandable terms. He doesn't chocolate coat it either.

That is for sure one of his strengths! 😊
I really enjoy these videos about Iceland news. Thank you for them!
Thank you Alina and Art and professor Þorvaldur Þórðarson for this very informative conversation! 😊 Looking forward to part 2 🌋
Thank you & professor Þorvaldur Þórðarson this was yet again very informative and educational. So fascinating 🌋looking forward to part 2!
Fantastic discussion. Thank you both, and thanks to Iceland Review!
Professor Throvalder rocks ! I have been following his talks since land uplift started at Svartsengi. He's right, cooling lava with water will only affect the surface. The inside remains (somewhat) fluid and poses an unstoppable force
You do a great service for your nation reporting this news.
Thanks, Alina and Art and Prof Þórðarson.
Probably a good idea for the government to start setting aside money to fund the future building of protective berms around the capital region. As he said, it's only a matter of time before the volcanic systems nearest there, like Krysuvík, will erupt.
Excellent discussion!
Wonderful infprmative production!......Thanks so much.
This was excellent, so informative.
What an interesting man; the best I’ve heard so far on this topic. He’s calm, informative and very easy to comprehend.

Thanks for asking about the possibility of shield volcanoes. Very interesting that he also thought about it watching the lava ponds form as this was an idea that came to my mind also 😊 Really looking forward to part 2 of the interview.
That was really interesting to listen to. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a more in depth interesting chat about Volcanoes. It’s almost sad news to hear that this current event will be over very soon. I hope the next eruption is really spectacular but far enough out of the way so as not to put anyone or anything in danger from the lava flow or the gases. Best wishes to everyone. Great to hear that you enjoy them! 😊
Love your reports. Thanks!
No volcano is ever truly "dead", just dormant!
Volcanologists in Iceland can learn new things in real time from others around the world. It’s great learning about Hawaiian volcanic terms.
Wow ! Great job !
Thank you !! 🙏
That volcanologist looks well fed
Thank you Prof. for explanations. I was wondering if they later use sea water, will the salt content have a lasting effect on rehabilitation when decades later all is cooled magma flow fields and vegetation returns? Or does ir all just evaporate in the extreme heat?
A question from California viewer. I'm sure the authorities have consider this. By the videos I see the lava is coming out in one direction. Why can't the opposite wall of the volcano be blown up to change the direction? If the lava could be diverted even for a short time maybe the lava could harden and stop flowing toward the plant. Don't know where they are getting all that dirt for the berm but there is a hill right there. Is this the wrong type or legally can't be used?
I was hoping it was Pauli, but he's okay too.
Iceland sits on a rift, the lava is always moving around and breaking out and they can only guess the when, they can't guess the how or what is going to be the end results. We have no control over the lava.
I'd bet this guy a nickel... this volcano will erupt again and ooze lava everywhere again.

On the Mid Atlantic Ridge? No bet.
I just love some English they use ' I'm just talking from my head'; followed by a giggle.
Be careful what you predict.. it might just turn out to be 100% accurate
Should there be a barebones second airport in case the international one gets wiped out? Sounds like it's in a highly vulnerable place.

You are right-the volcanic activity actually ended a couple of hours after we finished filming on Friday! 🌋
Please Iceland. Stop the whale hunt. Theyre an endangered species. Shame.

I heard him give different scenarios and with each of them did say it could or couldn't. If a learned person gives a view using the word I think, I assume that it's his view based on his years of expertise and that he acknowledged the possibility of it not happening otherwise he would've said I know this will definitely happen. If it doesn't happen it doesn't diminish all the knowledge and years of hard work he has accumulated in one second.

Sofar, most eruptions surprised us in some ways. It is almost inpredictable to know what is going on at depths of several kilometres. Everytime it changes. He does his best, with the knowledge we have today.
