Eruption Number 9 Will Probably Become a Reality Late This Summer

I was holding on to the theory that the magma inflow was decreasing for as long as I could but it's no longe sensible since the numbers are quite clear about this. Eruption number 9 will most likely occur late summer or early autumn. We have been putting up a strong fight against those elements of nature but to be realistic, we can only do so much so we better get prepared for a cold winter on the Reykjanes peninsula because anything else would be pure luck, as things look now.
Some of the summer shots in this video are from projects iv'e been filming recently and many of them will be online soon.

Thank you, Gylfi. I hope the alternative hot water source works out as more than a backup and that more safe hot water and electricity sources can be added to the peninsula infrastructure as soon as possible. I also hope that Grindavik will be able to come back to life with tourism and especially fishing.

Good morning Gylfi or goodnight from me just going off to bed...I feel so saddened about Grindavik I know if it was me I too would love to back to my home...however there are still the danger from all the chasms under the surface... this was a great video... you have sunshine for a change...Iceland is a bit like here suffering from the dearth of sunshine...and when it does appear we kind of drop everything and sun worship for as long as we can...I hope to see you pop up in my alerts soon ATB from Scotland 😀🌠

Thank you for the update, Gylfi, you always present the bigger picture in a very down to earth way, without sensational content. It is so sad that Grindavik is becoming a ghost town and people have lost their homes and livelihoods. It is a waiting game with no idea of the end results.

There's at least one more eruption in the system. Magma influx has slowed, but not by much, not enough for it to stop just yet. I believe, based on what happened just before the last eruption, that inflow increased slightly, probably from four to five cubic meters. Magma volume increased by 2 million cubic meters in five days. Previously during a similar time frame it was 1.7 million cubic meters or less. So, based on that magma influx may have increased slightly. Also, with all the uplift, earthquake swarms, eruptions, uplift dropping again after each eruption, it's possible that the rock may have been stretched and cracked to the point that uplift was slower to respond this time.

Hang on a minute Gylfi. If the thermal power plant were to be moved, wouldn't that mean the Blue Lagoon either loses its thermal water supply or needs to move with the power plant? I admit, I don't know a lot about either infrastructure.

Yes, those two units would go down togeather, the Blue Lagoon uses the mineral rich waste water from the power plant. I do however believe that those separate units could handle some distance and pipelines could do the trick, but I'm not sure. But this looks bad

Thanks for another informative video. I think you are right that nature is quite finished there yet! I hope someone in Government starts a backup plan now not when it happens if the power plant is hit! Summer looks great over there compared to winter here....cold and wet!

There was an interview on Iceland Review recently where the vulcanologist indicated that the rate of magma influx under Svartsengi is getting slower with each eruption. He (Þorvaldur Þórðarson, I believe) is predicting an end to the eruptions in this specific area this summer. While the IMO graphs of magma accumulation are indeed a lower slope for the most part as you progress through this eruptive series, i dont see the same trend in the inflation numbers from the GPS data. Sadly, my guess is another eruption - around the end of August. After that... who knows! Maybe things will move to the West and spare Svartsengi and the Blue Lagoon. 🤞

It is mainly a mental and emotional problem. As said in the video the power plant is sitting at the worst place and actually Grindavik too, although easier to defend, sits also at a bad, i.e. low spot. Which normally would mean when you do that (build it there) you know that one day you have to move. Well - normally - but we humans are not normal any longer. We have become hard and brittle, cannot go with the flow and fight everything that does not fit this mindset. So in that sense the whole affair is a good thing as it points out our flaws. Will we learn from it? A few might but most people rather die than change. Which will be a general problem worldwide in the coming time.

The unfortunate reality of living where literally the entire landscape is volcanic in origin is that everything is likely temporary. Finding a "safe" place to build means understanding that it can rapidly become unsafe. Take what you can while you can while knowing the earth can take it back at any time. Heck of a way to live, but the landscape in Iceland is SO beautiful.

I think what we are witnessing is how a big shield volcano is made and how most of the shield volcanos on Iceland were made. Can you imagine if this went on for years how high the ground there would be? It’s already 100 feet higher than when this started. I hope it stops though and there are eruptions in safe place like the eruption that started in Geldingadalur. It would be fun to have more there even! As long as they are away from homes and power plants and the like. I know you will get some great footage where and whenever anything happens.

The pattern to me looks like the eruptions begin and end along a long deep crack that keeps producing fissures so, next one maybe also be in the same general area. Nonetheless, the eruptions are getting too close to feel any comfort about it now

Even if the lava doesn't overtake Grindavik, there are still those fissures that can't be filled in. It's crazy enough for former residents to move back, but absolutely insane to let foreign tourists wonder around, other than maybe some kind of guided tours. I have wondered, as long as it, too, isn't buried, could the Blue Lagoon drill it's own hot water wells to keep the pools full even if the power plant is shut down?

  • @45KevinR

I heard somewhere that Icelandic Pension Funds are invested in the blue lagoon (and maybe the power company too?). So it's a too many eggs in one basket situation. If they give up on the existing site, then the financial impact would be huge. Add in the energy/heating loss and it becomes a crisis. I guess when they built it the logic was, no eruptions for 750 years, it'll be fine. It makes me wonder what kept it asleep for 800 years, and what woke it up. The upper chamber was likely the source of the heat for the power plant, so it was there all along.
