The Last Chance to Find a Gasket for the Bonneville

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I head off to scour Triumph's Spanish network of dealerships in a final attempt to find a gasket for my Bonneville.
And Monika and I grab Valencia's most famous drink; the Agua de Valencia.

Thank you so much all for getting in touch to help find the Triumph Cylinder Base Gasket (part number T1160127). I had so many kind messages and helpful emails, so I wanted to thank you all here as I’m hugely sorry I can’t reply to them all. To give you an update/overview; I’ve contacted a number of different companies in the UK that say they have the part in stock, such as Worldoftriumph.com, I’ve then paid the money for the gasket, but I’m then contact to say that the part actually isn’t in stock and then refunded the money. I’m almost certain this part is nowhere in the UK. I’ve also contacted a number of different gasket manufacturers, but they won’t make an individual gasket for me- they will only deal with bulk orders. I’ve also queried with different bike mechanics if the gasket can just be cut out from gasket material I’ve been told this isn’t possible (ie, it needs to be a genuine gasket). I think the part has hopefully been located in Hungary (2-3weeks shipping, potentially), and a gentleman in the US has found one for me on the American eBay! I massively appreciate the help, thank you all and have a fantastic weekend!🙂🙌🏻🙌🏻

The only thing that would stop that gasket being made in copper is that you can get your hands on the thickness required to maintain the correct piston squish height and anyway that could be “tuned” to be correct with shim steel if required or skim the barrels to suit. In addition I see that Wiseco make Bonneville head and base gaskets and say they have them in stock. Plus try Cometic, see if they can help you out if you don’t want to make one

Looks like KZread doesn't like comments with links (been deleted twice). Anyway, took a look at a photo of the gasket, and doesn't appear to be 2 dimensional; looks like it is stamped from aluminium sheet, which would explain why the mechanics cannot hand cut one, and why the old one cannot be reused. Bike-parts-triumph claim to have them in stock (on their website), but I guess you may have already tried them

This is becoming more of an issue for many brands of vehicles and not just motorcycles either. It's better business for the manufacturers to sell you a new vehicle. Of course in many cases the aftermarket fixes the issue, but sometimes there's not enough profit in that and some parts are complex enough that nobody has the capacity for producing them in a profitable way.

Hate to repeat what a lot have said in the past Freddie . Making a gasket is not a big deal. I worked in engineering at sea for 35 years. As you can imagine you cannot nick to a dealer when in the middle of the ocean. We always carried a selection of gasket materials should the need arise. Find a good old engineering company or even a classic car company. I assure you it is not difficult. This predicament could have been remedied weeks ago and very cheaply. Good luck!

Had a terrible buying experience with them, poor customer service, everything an extra and a useless warranty so never purchased in the end. Freddie, how difficult would it be to make a base gasket? Waiting for 2 months is ridiculous. Are there any classic bike specialists that can make you one? (I see someone suggested Alan Milyard, I bet he would be able to find a solution). What on earth are Triumph doing? You should be on the phone (or indeed go in person) to their managing director and ask that he personally finds a solution. If they can't get a batch made, they should get one cut by hand. This should be done for any customer, but even more so to a customer with a hundred thousand KZread subscribers. Come on Freddie! Even more so COME ON TRIUMPH!

  • @richardyardley5127

I am shocked that Triumph UK do not carry a stock of spares for their own bikes! Even service items, like gaskets. It's quite incredible!! If someone like you, a prominent KZreadr and vocal Bonneville enthusiast with over 100k subscribers can't get them to pull their finger out, what chance the ordinary owner?! Heck, they shouldn't even need to get their finger out. These sorts of items should be readily available off the shelf!! You may have to go to a custom gasket maker to sort your problem out here but in the meantime I certainly wouldn't be throwing my money at another Triumph to fill the gap. Not after this customer service disaster anyway... You could pick up nearly new/new Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 for between £5-6.5K to see you through and sell it on in a year if you wished and loose very little. Worth a thought perhaps...

I have recently taken delivery of a Speedmaster Chrome, exactly like the one you saw in the Valencia showroom. I negotiated to have heated grips (and the Triumph radiator guard) fitted free of charge as part of the deal - the very Triumph heated grips you were admiring in that showroom. They are great! Single button - you press it once and "Lo" comes up on the speedo display, and the grips heat at low power. Press it again, and "Lo" is replaced by "Hi" as the grips go to full power. Press the button one more time and the display shows "Off" for a few seconds, and the grips switch off. I've only had the bike a couple of weeks and much of that time the weather has been awful, so so far only 200 miles on it. So still getting used to it. But also so far.... I LOVE IT!

Hi Freddie, I can see how you must be struggling finding the part you need. I’ve had similar struggles with finding parts and repairs going wrong, it can become demoralizing and feels like the world’s against you. My own experience is when it all comes together the elation is so sweet. The funny thing is that after 30+ years of this I never really remember the trials just the elation of success. Proof of this is I’m currently restoring a 1970 Z28 Camaro which was parked up in a garage in 1985, so you can see how addicted to the journey I am. Please keep the faith don’t give up. It’s like a different type of journey with your Bonneville. Chris

Thanks Freddie and Monica, It must be frustrating to discover Triumph dealerships piled high with new bikes and accessories but not essential spares like gaskets. At least for Harley, there are 3rd suppliers for spares such as gaskets, so I'll count that as plus for that make. If you have the cash, you could do worse that grabbing a nice used Harley to ride while your British bike is off the road. Springers are very special Harleys, so it's a shame that Monica doesn't seem to like them. They're not cheap to buy used though... For an affordable used Harley, you probably need something in the region of £5k - £8K. This IS a lot of money but you could get a nice 1200 Evo Sportster or an Evo or Twin Cam Dyna for that. The 1994 (and on) Dyna Convertable is a forerunner to the Sport Glide that you recently enjoyed. (Please steer way from FXRs - they're reserved for special folk like me!)) When I owned unreliable Italian bikes, it was often necessary to have a spare bike. Anything cheap and cheerful but reliable should do. My historic spare bikes were a Honda CB 200 Benly and a Honda CB400T Dream. The Benly was cheap, 100% reliable and an absolute hoot to ride. My ex-partner kept it when we separated. Folklore has it everyone hates CB400Ts because they replaced the iconic CB400F four hundred four. But having owned one of each, a sorted CB400T is much more fun to ride :) These days, a nice cheap but reliable "proper motorbike" is probably Japanese with at least two cylinders and at least 600ccs. But other inexpensive options are available....

Once again a great video. Such a relaxing way to unwind after an exam. Keep up the good work! It would be cool to see a Sumo on your channel, something like the Yamaha 250 WRx. A simple bike that's good for the city. That would certainly be something new on your channel, but any bike is great! greetings from Zurich, Tim

Freddie ..you can ask a Mechanic shop im sure you'll find someone already did a similar thing with gaskets...they will make a solution... its not that difficult as you may think..just ask ... choose the easy way to solve the problem 🙂..... Or write ✍️ down here the Parts Numbers for us as a Followers you may accidentally find some help to find it and send it to you... Greetings 💐👌🏻👍🏻

T100 & T120 share most components, the frame and engine are the same physical size. The T100 is a 5 speed 900cc HT engine instead of the 6 speed 1200cc on the T120, and has a single disk on the front. This makes it slightly nimbler to steer.

Well all your talk about Triumph I’ve finally gone and got one! You will remember the advice you and some out your followers gave me about the selling price of my Indian Chieftain Ltd, I took it onboard and went to a dealership and sold it, at the same time purchased a Triumph Thunderbird LT 1700. Wow what a great bike, do I miss the Indian? NO the Thunderbird ticks all the boxes and handles so well, and looks amazing. Thanks to you and the KZread community.

That was a few weeks ago and yes I checked for the gasket. They didn't have it... Lucky for me the they had the rubber head gasket I needed. Oh Cheers 🥂

Is this what you need? *"Cylinder Head Gasket - OE - Triumph Bonneville 865 EFI - 2008 - 2016"* ? There is a famous auction site in which someone has one new *"OEM"* left for sale, they are in the UK. They have others also (different engines) I think your Triumph is the 865 - year 2010 - double check though with your mechanic. (I have no affiliation with any seller or any auction sites)

You've all my empathy here - I'm currently going through my own thing with Triumph & my bonneville. From the point at which I discovered an oil leak, had the dealer repair it and subsequently deliver the bike back to me it had taken approx. three months. However, it doesn't seem the repair has fully worked. I have given up with Triumph as a whole on the back of my experience and have decided to move back to BMW - I hope the same doesn't happen with you!

Hi Freddie, as previously mentioned its no big deal to get one made or make one yourself. You just need the right material and the cylinder head to make a template. I made one for my old Honda CG 125 out of cardboard and made sure I used plenty of gasket sealant. The engine is still good and doesn't leak any oil after 2000 miles.

Just found this channel and newly subscribed. 👍🏻 I have many many bikes from a 2022 T120 all the way to a 1934 Ariel. I think someone else here mentioned to get a gasket made and I would recommend a copper gasket. There are a few gasket makers in the classic bike scene (I have spare copper gaskets for my A65’s). And this may solve your woe’s. Also up here in North East Scotland and the midges aren’t as bad as the west coast…. But even now after half a century of life they still drive me nuts…. Take care.

She has 59k miles but is a stonking bike and can easily take a pillion. No strings, just take it and enjoy it if it helps you through the summer. It's a cheap bike so nothing to worry yourself over if something happens, I can fix it. Regards. Will.

Triumph haven’t made the air cooled Bonnieville for over 7 years now so I’m not surprised that they don’t keep stock on the shelves for it tbh. I had a gasket set for my 2012 Bonnie until a few months ago and tried to sell it on eBay with no success so I ended up throwing it in the bin! 😮

I'm an engineer over here in the states and while I know gaskets (depending on shape and what they're made of) can be precision parts you can likely get the spec from triumph and have one made. Talk to a custom shop like Del boy's Garage in the UK and see if you can have one made. He also has a KZread channel and that could allow for a video collab. Heck, for parts like that we've taped down trace paper over engine parts and spec'd parts off that. You can definitely have one made. Just have to find someone up for the challenge
