The Last Blockbuster is Lame! - Hack The Movies

Фильм және анимация

Tony with Newt and Crystal review The Last Blockbuster. In this Podcast / Movie Review of This documentary they'll talk about all the things that make it lame. Like the constant cutting to celebrities, the way its horribly structured, and how everyone its really just one big advertisement for Blockbuster merch.
The documentary tells the story of Blockbuster Video, a video rental business. The documentary explores how the video rental company put independent video rental stores out of business by striking deals with film studios. These deals, known as revenue-share deals, allowed Blockbuster to negotiate lower price than their local counterparts in exchange for a cut of the rental fees. Eventually the Blockbuster brand would crumble only leaving one store left in Bend, Oregon.

When me and my bros were kids we'd always dare each other to run into the adult section real quick then run out. Anytime one of us came back out we'd always be like; "bro what did you see!!". So it became a thing of running in and trying to take as many mental pics as possible in like 2 seconds, then running back out and relaying what we saw. We were scientists conducting science.

My mom and dad owned our town's first video store from 1980-1991 (yeah, my local mom & pops store was literally my mom & pop's). The "movies for mom and dad" section at their store was a pair of blue 3-inch 3-ring binders sitting on the front counter, which had flyers and sale sheets for each of the adult titles and when someone found a movie they wanted, they'd just point to its flyer and someone would go to the back and get the movie for them.

I used to work at a video store called Hastings. It lasted longer than Blockbuster. It was a video store, and bookstore, and music, and cool stuff. I was the video manager. We had movies that blockbuster wouldn't sale. We did have a small adult section. It was about 2 shelves of movies not behind a door. It was next to the musicals. I swear it was only kept around because one customer would buy 200 to 300 dollars in porn movies and porn magazines every Sunday. It was gross. It got to the point that managers would only check him out. Because of the stuff he would say while paying.

Blockbuster was the nazi of video rentals. I was glad they went under. You could rent movie for 49 cents at soundtrack before blockbuster bought them out. Then they would never forget your late fees. The unwritten rule of video rentals was that if you had late fees, you would have to pay them next time you showed up or you just never rent there again. Blockbuster would try to put that shit on your credit report.

One of my first video store experiences was a pharmacy near my grandparents' house where you either told them what movie you wanted or you handed them the empty cover off the shelf and they gave it to you in a clear case if they had it-with both an actual video store and a Blockbuster nearby too. There was a store one town over from where we lived too when we first moved there, so that technically is the first experienced then in that case. The Blockbuster in the same town as the locally-owned one eventually was the only one left though and it was a regular stop on weekends for quite a while with us. Haha.

Good day. I am fascinated and intrigued!!! I love the sarcasm and criticism. I mean constructive criticism and sarcasm... Lol!!! Anyways, I was the abiding blockbuster customer, but I witnessed and experienced several weird stories in blockbuster in the US and Mexico...Yes, I lived in the border of US and Mexico. So, I had the border-blockbuster experience. Lol!!! Anyhow, I agree with you that is a novelty place with a novelty documentary, period. However, I prefer to see the positives and negatives of blockbuster stories from employees, customers, and the corporate executives admitting their business errors.... With these comments in mind, I like your honest and direct humor... I mean good demeanor humor. Excellent, keep it up!!!!

This "documentary" really could have been a 10 minute piece on Vice. It's hard to celebrate the same brand that killed all the mom and pop rental stores before meeting it's ultimate demise but I will say my local Blockbuster in Oxford, MS was the bomb. The front half was a regular ole Blockbuster while the back of the store was full of adult movies, odd horror movies, B, C, D- movies Even people would just put their own badly made home recorded movies on the shelf. You would find the most obscure shit in the back. And also fighting tooth and nail with your parents to get them to rent you N64 games looking at the box art on the shelf on display. Man good times.

My dad said, oh I didn't know they were making a second one, to which BM responded..."Neither did I."

I'm old enough to still remember video stores. I went to a local down the street store called VHQ, which was a chain subsidiary of movie gallery, which is a subsidiary of Hollywood video. And in 2009 it shut down. There was a Rogers video a couple blocks up from there. That shut in 2010. I never really went to blockbuster because it was really out of the way. I got a free copy of the Wii Up game, due to VHQ closing.

Damn this was a hilarious episode, I saw the Documentary and it was OK, but you guys are right the people just sukin the d of Blockbuster. Where I'm from in the 90s we had a small video store like a Ma and Pops store then we has a Video Kingdom, then came Blockbuster and a gas station which has a small rental spot. All were rivaling each other. The last ones to stand where Blockbuster and Video kingdom which changed to Movie Gallery. Movie Gallery lasted longer than Blockbuster. It was cheaper and yes way better selection.

All this movie did for me was make me think of the memories I had in the two mom&pop video stores in our town, Sigma Video and Entertainment Tonight. Sigma was the best. Smaller but more of a deep cut selection. E.T. came in and eventually closed Sigma. Then a Family Video moved into Sigma’s building and E.T. closed. Sweet justice.
