The Largest Turtle Species | Secrets of the Zoo: Down Under

Ойын-сауық

There are eight Galapagos Tortoises living at the Taronga zoo in Dubbo Australia. They are among the oldest animals living at the zoo and take things slow and steady, their presence encourages keepers to do the same.

At the zoo where I volunteer, you can go behind the scenes and actually pet and feed them. It’s a lot of money, but well worth the memories.

That was really neat to learn about those turtles! Thanks! What happens to them during the winter seasons? I'm embarrassed to ask this but, are they warm blooded animals? How long does it take for their eggs to hatch? Do you incubate the eggs or leave it up to Mom? What is their average life span? On Galapagos, who would be their predators? How many eggs on average do they lay? This was so fasinating for me. Thanks for the public education!

I'm not sure about the winter seasons, I imagine off the coast of Ecuador it doesn't get too cold so they would stay living their general life. They're cold blooded animals like most reptiles and they normally lay around 2-15 eggs per clutch which take about 150 days to hatch. They're I think one of the animals with the world's longest lifespan reaching over 100 years, I think some of the oldest have grown to around 175 years old. They only have one predator called the Galapagos Hawk, but thats only for the eggs & new hatchlings, so the grown ones are fine, but I imagine the reason they are endangered is more so due to humans than any predators :( Hope this answered enough of your questions!
