Prague Main Railway Station is the largest passenger station in the Czech Republic. However, this is far from the oldest station.
The main station was built at the end of the 19th century.
The neo-Renaissance station had the shape of a luxurious Italian villa.
The "castle station" soon ceased to have sufficient capacity. Growing railway traffic required reconstruction and expansion of the track
Preparatory work began in 1901, construction itself began in 1909
In 1972-1977, extensive modernization and expansion of the new registration hall was carried out, which is connected to the historical building, the railway station, covered parking and the C Hlavní nádraží metro station.
Another complete renovation took place in 2006-2017, which modernized the underground reception hall, the middle part of the historic Art Nouveau building and the glazing of the historic hall above. Platform. The underground hall is now divided into two floors, on which shops, restaurants and fast foods, ticket offices, waiting rooms and other station services related to a comfortable journey are located.
On the first platform of the Main Station there is a memorial in honor of Sir Nicholas Winton, who in 1939 saved 669 predominantly Jewish children from occupied Czechoslovakia from being transported to concentration camps by arranging for their transport on a British train.
The historical building and the hall above the railway are among the largest Art Nouveau monuments in the Czech Republic.
