The Largest Mountain Carving In The World

We're Olivia and Nathan 👋🏽
Yes it is true, Crazy Horse Memorial and Monument in South Dakota is the largest mountain carving in the world! What makes it special is not just the grandeur of it, but also the Native American history, more specifically of the Lakota Sioux tribe, that's attached to it. Getting to experience the Indian Museum of North America along with the Native American Educational and Cultural Center was also amazing!
After visiting Custer State Park last week, it was interesting to hear about the Battle of Little Bighorn (also known as Custer's Last Stand) and the history of the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. To learn the story of Chief Henry Standing Bear and sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski's dream to bring this mountain carving to life was truly impressive.

When we were in the black hills July 2020, we passed on touringCrazy Horse, --just saw it from afar, and we've regretted it. We do plan to go back to that area and def wanna visit now thanks to your excellent look at it. I'd also like to see the Kevin Costner Dances With Wolves thing near there. You could easily spend a while in the area and not see it all. Once again great content and great editing! 😎Dave and Lorrie

There's just something about Black Hills that draws me to it. The first time I visit Crazy Horse Memorial was in 1973. I was 10yr old. It's too bad you never made it to Deadwood. One of my favorite places to be also and I think you both would have loved it.

Went there the second week of October 2021 in about 26 inches of snow. It was amazing. But the truly amazing part was the historical stories passed on by the Native Americans. Mainly don’t ever trust the government. Most of the state park and Needles Hwy was shut down due to the snow. What a bummer.

In the year 1775/1776 a Lakota leader named Standing Bull with a band of followers traveled west of the Missouri River and discovered the Black Hills bringing back sprigs from a tall growing tree. Years later a Lakota man by the name of His Horse Foolish and his wife Rattle Blanket Woman had a child. The child was light complected and had yellow curly hair. Rattle Blanket Woman was accused of sleeping with a white man. The child was named "Curly" The child Curly's mother committed suicide when he was four years old. Rattle Blanket Woman had been in love with the brother of His Horse Foolish's brother who was killed in battle with an enemy. At around age ten Curly received a new name "His Horse Stands Looking" because he walked up to a wild stallion and placed a lead on it. At age sixteen His Horse Stands Looking proved himself in battle saving others and killing two enemies. At that time his father gave him the name "Crazy Horse" which had been his grandfathers name. Crazy Horse's ambition was to be a holy man like his father and grand father. The band of Lakota Crazy Horse belonged to refused the right of the Sun Dance to any holy man who had killed a man so Crazy Horse died without those scares. A truly great man and leader who went through many troubled times.

Too bad you had to bypass Deadwood. We went to the bar where Wild Bill Hickok was shot, and only 5 blocks away, Boot Hill, where he, Calamity Jane, and others are buried. Also you'd love the town itself.
