The Land Where Women Rule: Inside China's Last Matriarchy

China's one-child policy led to millions of female infanticides-except in a lush valley known as the “Land Where Women Rule.” Located in the foothills of the Himalayas, Lugu Lake is home to China’s Mosuo matriarchy. The region's 40,000 denizens have come up with a unique own family structure that puts women in charge. The Mosuo's “walking marriages”-in which women can have as many boyfriends as they want throughout their lifetime-replace traditional monogamy and inheritance passes from mother to daughter.
But are the women really in control-and how are men fairing under their rule? Broadly correspondent Milène Larsson spends a week in Lugu Lake with three generations of Mosuo women to find out what life is like in one of the world’s last matriarchies.

    They don't have full authority, they are still under the legal jurisdiction of China. Also 90% of women's "oppression" under patriarchy were just terms of the marriage contract. Women could go it alone or chose to surrender some of their freedom in return for being taken care of. Men in this culture simply don't have this option, that's why they aren't "oppressed."

    This interviewer I don’t know why, she just annoys me a lot. “Glorified Housewives” I feel like it was rude and insensitive, these women are the same as those not in matriarchy’s but they actually get recognition. I feel like the interviewer just took to this from a tourist view. The point was to learn about their culture, not bring Britain into it. I also feel like she painted it as they were forced to stay there and continue their culture. This was just my opinion but the interviewer really did annoy me A LOT.

    I saw another german documentary about it and they too said that women are responsible for everything while men are fishing, drinking und playing games. one woman from that culture in the documentary said that they dont like the men bc they are lazy and have no real responsibilities and only enjoy themselves while women have to do everything. I think thats quite unfair and due to men not having a father role in that society. they are just fucking aroung in every house and spend the womens money. so this culture probably missed the point of matriarchy or is just crazy unequal. I mean sure we don‘t know what matriarchy really means but that culture definetly is not the best example. so it‘s not her fault but your little insight.

    also younger women in that documentary said they just keep up tradition bc of their family but dont want to live like it. the women she talked to were like that too. so it seems to be a dying model for a reason, them having no chemistry with the village boys. also the walking marriage might lead to forms of incest.

    @@Annybunny99 I amin half of reading "Leaving The Motherlake" and from the book it's obvious that things used to be different there... and men used to trade with outside work and herd animals, which was dangerous and the whole caravans got lost time to time... Their culture is probably in a state decay because of the large influence of the outside world, sadly, as most of "uncivilised" cultures... It's sad. And I found the interviewer quite annoying aswell, she has a really naive unprepared view, it seems to me like she did little to no research before visiting, her questions are pretty much what would you expect from an average tourist.

    In Sweden there's a term called Särbo. It means two people are a couple, but decide to live on their own. Sometimes they spend a lot of time together, do vacations together and spend the night together. But at the end of the day, this is my house and that is your house. You are merely a guest in mine, a welcomed guest, but still a guest. For many elderly couples this works well, they might've lost their spouse or divorced, but found a new partner. You both have your own families, homes and lives, but you still want someone special to spend your days with. I know a couple like this, and they say they haven't fought even once. It works great for them.

    "They seem like a glorified housewife, doing all the work." First of all, it is stated that the men stay with their families and help their sisters and aunts raise their children. They don't lay around doing nothing and dating girls, they most likely help their own families and should they choose, most likely go and visit their own children "at night". Also, I have seen several comments stating that the men have built many of the buildings in that area. They don't do nothing, they just aren't the leader of the household. And it is said that they also take care of politics and such, but the grandmother and high ranking women have the final say. This interviewer is very judgemental and not very thorough and she left me with several questions. I wish there was someone else interviewing.

In cities you can find women and men both work hard for economic pressure but in countryside, male do take exploitive advantage of female in working, farming, breeding...So this Mosuo culture is cool to some extent because women work for themselves and inherit property from their mons to their daughters. I agree 100% it was a bit upsetting to see a woman sort of denounce their entire culture especially after speaking with the esteemed matriarchs. It seemed to me she simply does not appreciate the value of independence in terms of industry and hard work. Also later in the video she stated that she thought their culture would die I thought that was a very awful way to end the video, just because the young people want to venture out certainly does not spell doom for the entire cultural tradition. Seems she denounced the views of the older people and just took the desires of the young people at face value, not much of a balanced nor even remotely unbiased presentation of this fascinating and inspirational culture.

    jesus, that glorified house wives comment is infuriating. She wants to be queen and doesn't understand that having power and the final say means pressure and responsibility, that's just how it is man or woman. Her idea of matriarchy is women live a luxurious life and she gets to live as a queen while the men do her bidding? Good luck with that attitude.

In their culture, responsibility and authority are tied, as it should be. Their culture, roles reversed, will be men being responsible for income and meals ( which most of OUR cultures already do ), but men get to sleep with whoever they want, ask their women to leave before morning because they need to get back to work, and moms have no legal or parenting rights over their kids. In our culture, men get the responsibility but women get the authority, which, doesn't work. It's either shared, or one side gets both. Yet, here you are still talking about men needing to learn their place blah blah blah.

    Very well said! Also the way that she said "have you heard of a company called Burberry" bothered me. It seemed to me like she was equating a modern British company's style to traditional garb and belittling the culture (" we have that, too!") as opposed to acknowledging that the design could be in a long list of things the British have appropriated from their territories. If promoting the history of colonialism was her goal, it wasn't explicit.

And women have every opportunity (that used to be given to men only ) to live their life to its highest potential, you have the option to chase any dream, you have the opportunity to be the woman you want to be without men to have a say or brainwashed women who prefer sons. They have no authority over your life especially men. But in order to make it happen then start yourself, create a matriarchal household. However, I don't like the growing number of pervy tourist coming there with their exploitive, subjective, motives towards these women and the men of "their" clans/tribal way of life; only viewing the Mosuo customs as a form of debauchery and free women labor force. A place where men are living laissez-faire lifestyles that outsiders now want to get in on as exploitive sexual/cheap labor trade. It should be an international crime for anyone to exploit any global indigenous culture. May Mosuo matriarchal families continue to thrive and live long, healthy, generational existences.

    Molly Marmalade There is no such thing as patriarchy. A patriarchy would be men protecting men at the expense of sacrificing women. It doesn’t work. Imagine two tribes of cavemen. One sacrifices men to prosper women, the other doing the opposite. After a few huge hit from natural disasters or resource war from other tribes, which will eventually die off? We all have the genes to protect women at all costs and treat men like shit, which, you call “patriarchy”? It has nothing to do with who is stronger or smarter. Healthy wombs are limited. Sperms are of no value as 1 can do the job of 20. Which is also why women are allowed to be selfish, or even encouraged to be egocentric, while selfish behaviors of men are frowned upon, and self sacrifice of men are seen as good act. 5% of men rise to power because they are great at securing resources against other tribes. Women taking those responsibilities, again, would be risking wombs. That was what survived.

  • @zilun

    @zilun

    6 жыл бұрын

    Molly Marmalade No one is jealous, please. Being able to stay home is a luxury. The more underdeveloped and impoverished a region is, the more female labor you see. You think women breaking their backs working at tea plantations under the sun feels empowered that they are strong enough to do hard labor? And sees staying at home as being locked up as slaves? You should stop reading books on trash ideology and talk to them. Go visit non first world countries, you’ll witness a lot of “empowered” “strong” women working typically men’s jobs, and like male peers, working 12hrs a day. So, just screw up U.S.’s economy into depression and women will start “becoming strong” to do male labor.

  • @zilun

    @zilun

    6 жыл бұрын

    Molly Marmalade You obviously know nothing about archeology of civilization and human evolution. Problem with women like you is you see only the top 5% of men, envy what they have and the rest of men working the mines, sewers, furnace, are just invisible to you. 98% of deaths from working hazards are of men. Must be patriarchy being sexist because dying at work is a male privilege. There is no such thing as patriarchy. A society that sacrifice the ones who carries wombs can’t populate the entire Earth. Maybe now we can, but in the past we can’t, so our genes carries that tendency to value young women over resources and value resources over lives of men. The funny thing is you want men to turn off this switch, but when they do, it’s not what you think will happen. Those men already exists, it’s MGTOW. They want nothing from women.

Wu Xietan dealt with political enemies by cutting off their limbs and tongues, blinding them, and then forcing them to eat slop and wallow in their own excrement for the rest of their lives. Studies show women commit 70% of child abuse, and female leaders are significantly more likely to lead their people into war and to conquer new territory. Matriarchy in America: anywhere that's been infected with the welfare state has family structures similar to this. And all those neighborhoods are the worst places in the country.

    of course matriarchy should come with work. this isnt a society of queens. this is rural China. They have all the respect in the world for what they do for their families, but I guess all you were interested in was women using men for comfort and that in itself is sexist. women are capable of doing it themselves, and its wonderful. I would like to see their traditions evolve with the development of the area though.

    +ivlust I agree. I realize also that people are not considering the fact that many women in western society are single parents who work their arses off. If there was a system like this then they wouldn't need to bed men to care for the children. The girls in the village do not realize that the grass may not be greener on the other side.

    It doesn't need to increase in "development"! They are already happy without air pollution, fluoridated water, vagrancy laws, massively large numbers of murders a day, racial discrimination, deceptive media, etc...! I say, whether if that society remains a matriarchy or not, leave it the way it is! It's so peaceful there! Their society should NOT copy American society!

    GOOD housewifery should be glorified! Women work harder than men EVERYWHERE and housewives in most parts of the world are seen as expendable workers. Id rather do the hard labour of a masuo and be appreciated and earn prestige than do the hard labour of womanhood in any other place where my work is just patronized condescended too and im a throwaway when i get too old and un pretty. Thats some bullshit.

    +sj4389gee The west is most definitely a patriarchy. Women earn 79% of the dollar that men earn for the same exact jobs. This doesn't mean they aren't working as hard, they are literally doing the exact same work, but aren't paid the same. And you act like the men of the west are forced to work in office settings against their will to support their family which is most definitely not the case.

    ***** I'm ignorant? Yet you sit here and 'inform' me about how the wage gap is a myth through over generalized sexist statements... The wage gap is calculated based off annual salaries, but you are just contradicting your own claim by proving how it is calculated. Regardless of whether or not women and men earn the same for a particular job, if you are telling me how it is calculated, you are admitting that there is in fact a gap on a national level.

    ***** At this point I don't even know what to say. I cannot reason with a person who says 'sexist or not it is the truth' and then goes and justifies that statement through opinion about stereotypical traits of the sexist, claiming it is biology. I see no point and continuing on here.

  • @benjicanter9106

    @benjicanter9106

    ***** No. There is nothing wrong with stating obvious facts, but using those facts to justify an opinion is where the problem lies. And you keep on saying 'biology' like I am supposed to drop my stance just because of 'science' but 1) you are using the science to back up facts, not your opinion. So I do not disagree with the science, just your opinion. 2) Testosterone and brain function based on gender would be considered chemistry... not biology...

    ***** I've never said they purposefully pay women less. There are no laws that say women and men have to earn the same for the same job, but there are no laws that punish companies if they don't give equal pay. That's why there is such a large gray area. They aren't breaking the law because there is no law. And to further answer, firing women to cut costs is blatant discrimination. If you fire all women working for a certain company, somebody will need to fill those vacancies, and if woman were fired to cut costs, then the company probably won't hire women to replace the fired ones.

    I agree with the weaver lady; Mosuo IS the most progressive culture in the world. Just think: no male domination, no lying, cheating, stealing, hitting, intimidating, wars; bombing. Just peace, quiet, and getting on with the daily living. Wow! I love it!!! And another thing, the children aren't being traumatized with fighting, family break-ups, or having to leave their homes, or be dragged from pillar-to-post as the single mom tries to find work, a safe living environment, babysitters, and schools while dad indulges his ego and refuses to pay child support. This is MUCH better. The kids stay with their moms, and the dads can visit. The kids get grandmother, mother, sisters, aunties, and lots to eat in a stable, safe environment. Sounds like a good deal to me.

    West Winds I like how you blame men but don’t talk about the piece of shit moms too who do the same shit. I too like this culture because it actually makes women get off their entitled high horse and work, not like in the West where men are expected to be providers even tho we have equality. Western women couldn’t live like this because they have it easy they don’t have to do this, I guarantee you that if women had to do the work these women do they would bitch and moan until men did the work because that’s how the West is.

    I don't agree with her summary that this life style is anything close to being a house wife because the women actually are comparable to men in a patriarch. Men work really hard and are the bread winners. That's ALOT of stress on their conscious. Obviously a single mom is the same. The best thing about their culture is that the blood family sticks together and make gains for the family. Everyone has a role in the family. This video has washed away so many pressures about my own life. Thanks !

Men are really easy to fall down into addicitions and that basically ruins every family here so women are extra strong here. But the strongest of them all is my mum! : D
