Asian Women Migrate To The Faroe Islands In Search Of Love

Finding Love in the Faroe Islands: Confronted with a shortage of women, men in the Faroe Islands are increasingly seeking wives from Southeast Asia. But what's it like for the women who swap the tropics for this windswept archipelago?
Subscribe to Journeyman here: kzread.info_c...
“I think Faroe Islands is the last paradise on this earth.” Grace is one among hundreds of Southeast Asian women who have moved to the Faroe Islands in the past decade. Seeking love, opportunity and prosperity, these women also plug an urgent demographic gap in the North Atlantic archipelago, where there is a significant shortage of women. Mary Joy moved from the Philippines when she was just twenty after marrying a Faroese man. Despite steep adjustments to the language and climate, she is now happily married with three children and a fourth on the way. ”My life is all as I planned.”

As a Filipina myself, I can confirm that there are a large amount of Filipina who seeks for foreigners to get a better life or in short to get hold of their 'green card' mainly because to support their family or something like that (Filipinos are family oriented) but who I am to judge them because I've never experienced poverty, I should be grateful for what I have.

Most of the commenters here don't understand that Filipino culture is very indirect and more feelings-based rather than appearance-based. "Love" is not equated with physicality but the willingness to sacrifice and give your family (including your husband/wife) a good life. Also, it's a usual thing in our culture to say "living with someone for 20 years is not enough to really know him/her". Saying that "my husband is just okay" or "I have no choice but to like him/her" is just standard Filipino humor, self-deprecating and indirect as opposed to European directness.

This situation is neither good nor bad, its simply human. Both parties want something, some people give more and some take more. My experience is that when two giving people meet they can have a very rewarding relationship. Takers can never be satisfied and will be unlikely to have a happy and durable bond.

Can see this situation in many places, many young girls/women from Japan and Sth. Korea, Europe, Australia etc., go to the beaches on Bali searching for their gorgeous hot beautifil body Bali beach boy. These boys (from 16 years old up) parade themselves up and down the beach wearing tiny boy bikinis or tiny G string bikinis. Most can speak good to excellent English, many have read some magazines on how to win/pamper a lady. Many of these boy strike it rich. And there's often a Balinese wife and kids at home getting the benefits of daddy being a hot gigolo. I was sitting on one of these beaches waiting for my son to finish his surfing lesson. A slow day for beachgoers, didn't take long for 2 Bali beach boys to offer their services to me. Always polite and pleasant, very clean, always well groomed. This is life.

A big shortage of native women is a big tragedy for a society. And it is so in many outlying places here in Scandinavia. And not all of us scandinavian men are only happy because we must get a wife from a poor country in South East Asia who are darker than us and with another culture. But the alternative is to live single all our lifetime. And without women no life. Sad but true. The word is brutal. I love my filippina wife and our two eurasian children but I still think is sad that our future in outlying places never will be a pure scandinavian culture in the future. But we figth for our oulying places and we want they shall live also in the future.

Lovely story - my mother was from the Faroe Islands but landed in mainland Denmark and fell in love with my Danish father. That was before Faroese was considered a recognized Danish language. She loved it when the Faroese got their own WRITTEN language and received letters from home with her own language which she had to adjust to. She loved it! I visited my family first time when I was 11 in 1956. The nicest family you could only imagine! I loved her temper - when she was angry she stamped the floor, never blamed us kids :-) I magine that coming from Asia like here must have been more than difficult. But my mother was very satisfied, although missed her family in the Faroe Islands. The first time for you from Asia to Faroe Islands must have been enormeously difficult - EVERYTHING new. (No written Danish until later Faroese) The Faroese are the most caring you can imagine! My brother and I LOVED it when she was angry stamping on the floor - they have a temper - and the most caring you will ever know! Now I am 77 - she taught us so much love!

Leaving poverty to start a new life with opportunities that are not available is wise. Everyone wins in this scenario. The Filipino definition of love is not the same as the western definition of love. True love is not a fleeting emotion like westerners think. True love is a commitment, a word that western women ignore and despise. People that criticize her choice are just selfish. She is happy, why can't you be happy for her and with her? She would do it all over again in a heart beat. That is love. She appreciates her husband and respects him. She is far wiser than the people here that criticize this story.

She has a beautiful family and they appear to be happy. The only person bothered is you. What’s interesting is your attitude about something that you as a Filipino knows is common practice. I just want to mention that my first love was a Filipina. She and I spent 7 year's in a relationship that can be summarized in one word, awstounding. Filipinas really value the idea of love. We had our bad times too, but we always ended up the arguments with a truce. She was loyal and faithful. Unfortunately, due to family circumstances, we were unable to wed. She and I separated because she felt that the relationship has no value any more, especially since we were unable to have a wedding. She still talks to me occasionally, and I always remember our says together. Of course not all Filipina are masterful lovers, some are not. The majority however are good women, and the culture plus upbringing makes them really good companions.

Western men exploited these Filipino and Thai women and took advantage of their desperation to escape poverty in their countries, convincing these women into having relationships with them so they can have a good life in a "rich Western country". While there are men who genuinely loved and respected their wives, many of these men are abusive and these poor women had no one to turn to as they are in a stranger foreign land.

You sound like a racist. No people is perfect. In the past couple of centuries, European countries were ethic cleansing (genocide) on many non-European people, sometimes in the name of the Church. Took native people's land and forced them into reservations. Then moved their own people into the stolen land (form of population relief). Then they introduced African slaves or indentured servants to work on the harsh land. Don't sit there on your high chair. You are falling off. If the European did not kill or take other peoples land, they might live in land that resemble the unsafe, overpopulated places you described. Remember the 10 commandments: Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods and others.

After reading through the other comments, I just need to say this to counter all the negativity. I don't think Filipinas who marry foreigners are ignorant of the prying eyes around them and the judgment thrown at them. But I admire them for standing by their man. And what's wrong with marrying to have a comfortable life? Isn't that what most people do? It's just bonus for some because they also get to marry people who fit their description of a dream spouse. Marrying for convenience is not a moral issue. Marriage after all is a contract. Both couples try their best to keep their ends. And the man whether he benefits less or more, made a decision. He consented to it. And the only moral decision he has to make is whether to honor his decision or not. All the judgments thrown at these women, if you can't provide them a good life then you have no right to judge them. Also do not impose your morals on them. Your circumstances in life are probably different from what they have. And our lives will be very bland if we all live the same lives. So all who are judging them, I bet you have such boring lives that you even found time to come here and spew negativity. Finally, I just want to tell the Faroese men thank you for taking good care of the Filipinas who became your wife. Never mind all the invective thrown at you. Just remain committed to your wives and raise your families well. If there are any signs of abuse, that is the only time we have the right to make any kind of intervention. But adult women who consent to these kind of marriages do not need any intervention from us and certainly not any moral judgment from us.

+Chyakhurs - People who think anyone of any other race or ethnicity, as somehow less honest, faithful, and "....dedicated to the family" are ignorant discriminatory racists. It's as simple as that. Human beings are essentially all the same the world over (and despite cultural or socioeconomic differences between nations). I could tell you horror stories about Filipinas (or other Asian women in my personal life, but I will spare you). At the same time I could tell you of positive stories of honest honorable Asian women (or women of any culture, race, ethnicity, etc.). People are people. If you have a problem with different races mixing on the Faroe islands, that means you must believe that a racially pure people is superior to a mixed race people. I hope I don't have to tell you the name of this ideology and it's creator. My guess as to why some white guys "import" wives: As a white guy living where I live, I definitely feel more desired by asian and black women than by white ones. Maybe it's because white women are typically raised to believe that they're the center of the world, and they have such high criteria when it comes to men that a lot of us regular guys just happen to fall short. A man shouldn't have to live his life alone and never have a family just because the women of his race have lost their damn minds.

I am married to a Filipina, I have lived in the Philippines for years, and been around many Filipinas. The one thing I can tell you for sure is that most of those Filipinas are not happy in their marriage. They are there for convenience. Because those men provide a good stable life for them. These are conservative women so they will not tell you they do not love their husbands on camera but I am sure the rest of those women know privately. Their conservative values (commitment) keeps them in those marriages. It saddens me because I would love to see everyone in a happy marriage like I have. Nine years and still we are like newlyweds.

I think your type of marriage is utopia, and through ages at least 50% of marriages are lacking "real" love even from the begininng of the marriage. Some years ago I read a discussion about Thailand. There was a sentence: If a Thai husband doesn't start using the services of pr.s after one year of his wedding day, he is really a rare exceptional case. I'm a man who has been married 29 years to my own countries woman in 🇫🇮.

    5 жыл бұрын

@@nwoke.ezu.ike_until_death If you knew the character of the average Filipino male* you'd understand why most women there would find it an easy decision to leave the country to marry a furriner. Like the one girl said, Filipinos are patriarchal, the more kids the better, whether they can afford to raise them or not; that, on top of their lack of education and unwillingness to leave the barrio for greener pastures, is why that country is so impoverished. When I married my wife we both knew what our motivations were, and both of us took an extreme risk, not knowing each other well enough. But we both felt that if we concluded we made a mistake, it wouldn't be difficult to do a re-set early on before we got too deep into the marriage. Fortunately -- and I do mean FORTUNATELY -- we remain happily married 40 years later, three wonderful kids and five precious grandkids, and we've made a comfortable and happy life together. But I recognize that we're probably the exception vice the rule. Like I said, it could've ended badly for either or both of us, because frankly neither of us was looking for love at that juncture in our lives. It just sorta fell into place. I don't blame any woman for wanting to escape that hell hole. My only complaint is that it's within Filipinos' power to fix it, and instead they are impervious to change and will do as little as possible to sustain themselves and their families. Frustrating to watch. *....and I mean AVERAGE. People are people always and everywhere; some very good, some very bad, and a LOT in between.

Most Filipina women married to any international men are most successful. FILIPINA WOMEN ARE FAMILY ORIENTED AND VERY LOVING AND 99% ARE RESPONSIBLY taking care of their love ones. 90% are successfully, happily married to them but never mistreat ‘em for regretfully on your part.

I tell them I'm old and they speak better English then I do. You know what is surprising? They actually pronounce the words correctly. Not slang like we Americans do. And here's the best one for all of you. They are over 8,000 miles away and most talk English. Latin America is just a few thousand miles and some are right on our doorstep and they don't speak or want to speak English. They feel we owe them for taking their Country.
