The Land Walls of Constantinople (part 2)

The famous Theodosian land walls kept Constantinople safe for a thousand years. Let's walk the full length of them and look at the details.
This video is part of a series - 'The History of Byzantium goes to Istanbul.' In 2018 the listeners of the podcast funded a Kickstarter to send me to Istanbul. I documented many of the surviving Byzantine sites and have made videos about them.
I am now able to offer tours to Istanbul (and beyond) for listeners of the podcast. Email me if you'd like to know more (thehistoryofbyzantium at gmail.com).

'The History of Byzantium' is a podcast telling the story of the Roman Empire from 476 AD to 1453. The podcast home page is here thehistoryofbyzantium.com/ and you can support the show at / historyofbyza. .

I must say I only found your podcast about a month ago and it has captivated me ever since, I listen to it at work and have managed to get to episode 201 in that timeframe. I will be devastated to say the least when i get toward the end.. but still have a good while to go! mainly wanted to say thank you so much for the professional and extremely detailed podcasts you make. what youve done for people like me who have always loved this time in history but dont have the time to dedicate to fully learning the ins and outs is wonderful. Easily the best media to date on the overall history of Byzantium in my personal opinion! I would recommend it in a heart beat to anybody even slightly interested in history. Thank you again Robin your a true legend!

What a great video. Waffle-free narration, good photos, and a good map, frequently re-shown, to illustrate where the photos were taken. I congratulate you on producing a tutorial which is an example of how TV programmes should be made [ but are not ]. Thank you.

Great video and greetings from Hong Kong. Can't wait for further episodes. Do you find it difficult to find roads or paths walking along the entire wall? Planning to spend a morning for that when visiting Istanbul.

No not difficult. There are a couple of points where you can't continue on but you can switch to the other side of the walls and carry on

I'm surprised that you didn't mention the postern gate mistakenly left open through which the Ottomans entered.

I wonder why the Ottoman Palace at the other end of the city came to be known as Topkapi.

One of the Ottoman Sultans built a summer palace near the Land walls. It was named Topkapı (Cannon Gate) Palace because of the salute cannons in front of it. The palace was wooden and it was destroyed completely in a fire. Then they gave its name to the other palace. Before then, current Topkapi Palace was known as Yeni Saray (The New Palace)

Nice presentation! Is there any remains which may suggest where the Constantinian walls were located or is it just a scholarly speculation?

Why do people live in the ruins of those walls? I'm assuming they're homeless, but you never know. Do they seem to "respect" the ruins? Is it common in ancient cities for people to live in ruins that way? It's very surprising to me.

Yes homeless people or refugees. Most cities don't have walls that are as large as this so it's not typical for most cities

Was walking the walls near the Gate of Charisius back in January. Went under/through a couple of gated-off sections from the city-side... didn't realise access may have been easier on the other side. No harm. But there were a lot of dodgy looking 'gentlemen' around the outside of the Gate. Didn't give us any problems, but I was on high alert. Not sure what that was all about...

There is a history of drug dealing and homelessness around different parts of the walls. Not that it was necessarily either of those things.
