Monastery of the Pantokrator
The Monastery of the Pantokrator was built by the Emperor John Komnenos and his wife Irene. It was both a huge charitable institution and the mausoleum for the Komnenian and Palaiologan dynasties. It is now called the Zeyrek Mosque.
This video is part of a series - 'The History of Byzantium goes to Istanbul.' In 2018 the listeners of the podcast funded a Kickstarter to send me to Istanbul. I documented many of the surviving Byzantine sites and have made videos about them.
I am now able to offer tours to Istanbul (and beyond) for listeners of the podcast. Email me if you'd like to know more (thehistoryofbyzantium at gmail.com).

For more information about Byzantine Constantinople visit www.thebyzantinelegacy.com/. It's a fantastic website providing breakdowns of the Byzantine buildings that can still be seen today and there you'll find most of the still images and sketches used in these videos.

The last great Emperor of Byzantium Manuel Komnenos was buried here. His black marble multi domed sarcophagus still existed in the 16 th century. Sadly destroyed along with so many others.
Good to listen to the podcast again, I lost track of it completely years ago.
Great video. Halfway through your podcast now as well and thoroughly enjoying it. Thank you for all the work you've done bringing this amazing history to life.

Thank you so much
Excellent video - very pleasing to see so many of the original elements carefully restored and preserved. The original Komnenian era flooring was particularly beautiful.
superb
