It was quite normal for the Romans, although not in the army. ( Or so I've come across) The army was very serious, lots of marching, and fighting, building forts etc... It was like a full-time life-or-death job. You can look it up, I suspect I may have gotten it from the Wikipedia section on "Homosexuality in Ancient Rome."

As well as unions were encouraged because men fought harder when their beloved’s life was quite literally on the line. The Band of Thebes being some of the most famous group of men. 300 men, paired off as 150 unions and fought & were victors over armies in the thousands.

My grandfather used to do this in the 1930s with a friend of his as pure entertainment - before everyone had TVs and even radios. He would squeeze your hand to show he still had it when he was an old man. He lived into his 90’s and only died because of a tree trimming accident. He taught me about self discipline. ❤
