The LA Bassist EVERYONE’S talking about

Музыка

A few months back, we got into the argument that all bass players get into - what are the coolest, grooviest bass lines of all time? After hours of heated debate, we decided to get LA bassist Nick Campbell to help make that decision for us.
In today’s video, Nick Campbell reels off the bass lines that shaped his sound. It’s the perfect way to introduce yourself to the worlds of Rocco Prestia, Ray Brown, James Jamerson and Colin Greenwood.
In this episode:
Why Nick is a huge Radiohead fan.
The first time he heard Tower of Power.
Why nothing beats a Ray Brown two-feel.
Is this James Jamerson’s coolest bass line?
And much, much more!
===
Video Breakdown:
00:00 - Introduction
00:11 - Tower of Power / Rocco Prestia - Squib Cakes

    As a drummer, it’s great to learn how bass players feel about tunes that are equally important to drummers. United in rhythm and feel.

    For great Ray Brown bass lines, you need to listen to "After Hours". It was a mostly improvised record of three improvisational geniuses (one run-through each of tunes familiar to the three, then one-take recording) : Ray Brown on bass, Andre Previn on piano, and Joe Pass on guitar. It's staggering how well they fit and how well they listened to each other.

    TOP is no joke. I remember when I heard the fingerfunk 16th note shit with Rocco and Jaco, the first time, it hit me in my soul. It's like I just tasted a flavor that I didn't know was possible and it was instantly my favorite food. I am going to hook y'all up (IMHO) Here's my bass/funk life-moments, when I got hit right in the soul by some funky ass bass: ================================ * kzread.info/dash/bejne/gZ9omNN7cpe8kag.html. Educated Bump by TOP with the late, great Rocco Prestia on Bass * kzread.info/dash/bejne/a6N8ytaOpq-dnbg.html A RHCP 16th note slap groove that hit me as a child before I ever picked up a bass guitar, was "Blackeyed Blonde" which I heard in the Skateboarding movie "Thrashin'", which I watched over and over, renting it from the Video Store (you youngins' don't know nothing about that, and I am sorry for you that you missed it) * kzread.info/dash/bejne/gnlqqs96os_Uj84.html The bridge from Jaco's come on, come over * kzread.info/dash/bejne/rKamlamKfN3JldI.html Larry Graham with GCS: "Entrow", when the beat finally drops ================================ Honorable mentions for funky ass shit: ================================ * kzread.info/dash/bejne/lGWNm9mYo6aehto.html. Paul Jackson with Mike Clark (both from Herbie Hancock's Headhunters band) kzread.info/dash/bejne/lGWNm9mYo6aehto.html from a japanese instructional rhythm section funk video This is a funky as it gets, but since I only learned about this recording in the last few years, it isn't in my lifetime funk-moments list yet. *. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qqKO2ZSAm7K-mpc.html Christian McBride on Electric bass with Brian Blade on drums ================================ Tommy the cat by Primus is probably one of the top ones and the reason I started playing bass, but everyone already knows that one, it's like saying RHCP higher ground, not even worth mentioning, probably, at least not here, amongst other bassists.
