    I'm an insomniac knitter so youtube knitting channels are my midnight hour besties. Always cheered when I see your one come up in the notifications, so keep doing what you're doing. Sound is definitely much better. I enjoy your 'ramblings' reminds me of my weekly knit club group where we all just knit and natter for 3 hours or more. Most of us from the knit club, knitting (crocheting as well), it's therapy and friendship in one, but for a lot of people this type of physical get together isn't accessible, so youtube can fill that void. Don't get anxious about your patterns, you're right, as a tech editor & test knitter, it's not in my mind set to judge any of my clients if they have a mistake in the first present of a pattern because it's sort of expected. I watched to the end, thumbs up!

    Well done Laura, your honesty is so refreshing and touching. I've taken to knitting and watching knitting podcasts in a big way since the start of the pandemic and I've learned so much about myself. Particularly regarding the process/product question. I've learned I don't need the approval of others, the personal growth and sense of achievement has its own reward. And I'm 72!

    I enjoyed the MKAL discussion. I am not a shawl or West enthusiast either, but it looks fun and challenging. Giving it to your gran is a great idea. My gran was a superb seamstress, embroiderer, etc, and she helped me learn. For her 100th birthday I made a quilt, knowing it was going to be closely scrutinized. It is probably my best hand quilting ever. She never really used it (too 'nice'). After she went to a nursing home at 103, she used to take it out and show her friends, and apparently bragged about her granddaughter.... so it DID have a use! It is back with me now, and is a lovely connection to her.

    Have to stop myself from writing a complete too long letter size comment, as your explanation of ‘knitting psychology’ made so much clear to me, which I had not figured out yet. I know I over- analyze my thinking constantly, so your openness about how it works for you, has made all the difference for me. Thank you, Laura! You have no idea how much it touched and helped me. Knitter for my entire live, knitting insane amount, while some is satisfying and and some isn’t, it is about the process vs end result knitting. Sometimes I might want a certain item, but 80% of the time it is about growing in skills and feel the soothing bliss of knitting, to balance life’s rollercoaster, I get restless when I don’t have an engaging project waiting for me, to pick up any time I need it. Anyway, since this is a public comment, I will leave it like this. Just know that as thinking-feeling person, knowing there are like minded people out there, is a blessing.

One of my mental health problems is definitely the fact that I don’t make friends, more just acquaintances. I have never had a ‘friend’ for long. As a stay at home Mom who doesn’t get to socialize, it can very taxing on my mental health when my husband is my only friend. 🤪 I absolutely love watching your design career blossom. As to Process or Product knitter - I feel it is not either/or, but it is both/and! I am process in that I don’t mind ripping out if I’m learning something and challenging myself. But I am product in that I only work on projects I really like and I won’t continue if they aren’t “tickling my knitting pickle.” And I love the feeling of finishing and gifting the things I make (to others or to myself). I love your podcast so much and really relate to and appreciate your transparency in sharing your struggles with finding confidence with a chronic struggle with poor body image and mental health. I resonate with that so much, and have found my love for knitting is huge in helping me working through that. Because, for example, I love my handmakes so much that I have had to accept that if I want nice photos of how my knit garments look on I have to be willing to have photos taken of myself! And I love knitting so much that it's a love stronger than my lack of confidence that makes me able to keep sharing my knits with others. It's still a real struggle but the more I do it the easier it gets.

    "Economical" is something everybody seems to say about knitting your own clothes and I'd love to understand why.. maybe it's because I'm a man and prices are different for men's clothes or whatever, but making my own garments is FAR more expensive than buying clothes has ever been. I knit because I love it and I can't not knit, but I'm certainly not saving any money

  • @_laurapenrose_

    @_laurapenrose_

    2 жыл бұрын

    I think for me the economical side comes from the fact that my knitted garments are made to last for as long as possible, I will wear them over and over and repair them if they get damaged, and then pass them onto my children if they want them, so instead of buying jumpers every year and eventually donating them or throwing them away/recycling them if they’re too damaged, I’m saving money by investing in something I will wear for years. I’ve so far found that I get bored of shop bought things quite quickly and don’t want to wear them year after year whereas with my hand Knits I look forward to them every winter! Thank you for watching and taking a moment to comment! Xx

    I'm older (62) and when I was learning to sew fabrics were cheaper and fast fashion did not exist. It was a totally different making scenario. Nice clothing was cheaper to make than buy, but it has certainly not been the case since the 1990s at least. Even then sewing or knitting things was a special and creative process, not just a money-saving decision. I just started knitting this year, and make it economical by reclaiming yarn from sweaters for most of my projects. Making do with reclaimed yarn in itself is a challenge and a creative process.

    My mum used to knit all our jumpers as kids, then as we grew out of them she'd rip a couple out and knit something else with the yarn! I swear she was still using some of the yarn when my son was born 🤣 Carl doesn't like me taking stuff apart that has been handmade though, "but there was a lot of effort went into making that" and I have to agree there. I have no interest in shawls at all so no MKAL here, too many other things I want to cast on that I will use and stuff I need to get cracking on for December. I, too, love your openness about your mental health and totally agree, it NEEDS to be talked about not "kept to ourselves".

    Laura you crack me up! Your little jaunty stroll while you were showing off your cedar lane sweater was so good! I'm really enjoying seeing you get more comfortable on camera since you've started the podcast, it's brought so much entertainment. I liked hearing your opinion on shawlography, I put mine down all of this last week after realizing I was knitting on a purl row during the brioche and didn't want to have to tink back half of an entire row and it was just frustrating me. I'll probably pick it back up this weekend but taking a little break from it was good for me. I made my grandma a very special shawl for her birthday this year and I absolutely had the same thought as you, that it'll get back to me some day. It's definitely special to have something to connect with. and I had the same thoughts about the Max sweater too! I've been looking for a sweater for my boyfriend that his picky-ness wouldn't cast aside and I would have fun with. I don't think I'll start it for him until the new year but I'm thinking of using Woolstok in a very similar blue to what you got!

    I loved hearing about your Shawlography. I once tried a fingerless mitt MKAL and didn't enjoy the process but hearing about your experience made me think...hmm...maybe... I went to Stephen and Penelope in Amsterdam a few years ago and he was sitting behind the counter brioching away and was very friendly and chatty. I think he's an amazing talent. I think some of his huge works-of-art shawls would be lovely laid on a bed, the back of a chair or as a lap blanket. Yours is so pretty and I'm sure your grandma will love it. Thank you for being so honest about your mental health. It's so great that you share your feelings.

    I love the chatty nature of your podcasts. It is so natural and feels like getting together with friends. I love the blue sweater and I think with your blue eyes it will be very pretty on you. I have not been knitting Shawlography but I have been watching the tutorials and learning new techniques with scrap yarn. I love that you are gifting yours to your grandmother. As a knitter she will appreciate the work that went into it, and the fact that it is a work of art. I am glad your conversations with the other designer went well. I think that when you look at patterns there are a LOT of patterns that look the same but have subtle differences. I think connecting with the other designer is a courtesy but should not discourage you from publishing a pattern when you know you did not copy someone else.

    First time viewer here and right away I could relate to you so much, I really like your natural and relaxed way of speaking in front of the camera! I've also had a a very tough couple of weeks with two little ones, and people in our family taking turn in being unwell, we need to hang in there, we can get through this! 💪 ;) I've also started the MKAL and I've had similar thoughts about it as you in the beginning. But I decided to frog it halfway through section 1, there were some parts that I really liked, but I didnt like the loops and the welts. And I dont have much knitting time, so I want to knit something that I really love. I do however really like clue 4 ;) I've now started a Fantastitch with the gorgeous LITLG yarn that I had originally bought for shawlography and I'm really happy with how it's coming along. Wishing you a nice weekend with lots of knitting time and healthy family members :)

I'm sort of (reaaaallllyyy) dreading my xmas knitting projects, as I'm a bit sick of knitting for others, but maybe breaking them down a bit into their component parts will ease the stress 🤭 as well as adding a background project that is a bit more challenging/fun/for me

    Love your podcasts and all your “ramblings”. 😀 I am not a Steven West fan. I am more of a practical knitter. I think Shawlography looks like something you hang on your wall like a tapestry not something you actually wear. It reminds me of a knitting version of the old embroidery samplers. I know I am probably in the minority but everyone has different tastes.

    Fabulous what a lovely hour and a bit listening to you. I am mixing up my knitting with English Paper Piecing which I am learning from Kate at the KZread channel 'The last Homely House'. I love having a go at different things, and I think the Stephen West shawl would be so fun to knit up, and as you say you learn a lot by doing all the different stitches and trying out color combinations you may not have thought of.
