Everyone knows that when swarming a single target , you are polite and patiently wait for your turn. 3.He didn't remove his helm to let his hair flow free. @Floron as I've heard in another comment. Victory for a knight in a situation like this is highly difficult but not impossible. Though one important factor I'd like to mention is the fear he'd create. Even after the rest of the camp attacks they're already scared of this Knight who appeared out of thin air. Then see that he's beating members of their gang quickly and efficiently. That fear would probably give him sufficient openings to win.

    Brilliant. 4 things that make this perfect for me. 1. Armor deflecting a light crossbow bolt, which is precicely what would happen. Bolts puncture at most, but don't fully penetrate steel plate. 2. Not only do I love the fact that it shows how well medieval armor can protect against both melee and missile weapons, but even more importantly, that a trained and experienced knight would deliberately allow to endure a lot of punishment knowing that his plate, padding and mail will absorb most of it, while wasting no time in counter attacking and slaying the enemies. Amazing. 3. The thugs actualy know what they are doing by deliberately aiming at the knight's exposed body parts, which is a rare, fantastic and very welcome level of detail. 4. Simple and contained story.

    Stephen J to be fair even that isn’t exactly true. If you look at the pike and shot era that followed the medieval era, armor was still worn on battlefields and was more than capable of stopping full bore musket rounds. The decrease in the use of armor was actually a change in the focus of tactics, focusing more on mobility and maneuverability. Heavier armor would have made it difficult to achieve the same amount of mobility as lighter troops.

    This is probably one of the best portrayals of a skilled warrior in real plat armour I have ever scene, absolute respect. Great and experienced warriors in plate armour was a modern version of a tank against light infantry. I remember a story from the third crusade where 3 fully armoured swiss knights held off over 200 men on a bridge they were guarding by a city, the 3 knights not just held but killed nearly all 200 men and the rest just withdrew out of shear terror that was before them. (some story's said it was over a thousand, but realistically it was probably 200 because it took a group of men a whole day to clear all the dead bodies afterwards, no bull crap). Imagine 3 knights like in this video on a secured position like a bridge or gate, absolute meat grinder for the poor fools who charge them.

Like in this video i like how this large group is nervous as they see they are dealing with knight in full armor because back then people would have known how serious it is. They were higher class, but they started martial training often i think at something like 7 years old. Today we just dont have anything to compare to that we have SF troops sure but they dont start serious military training other than as adults. Then back in this period the armor this knight wears maked him in to very difficult to kill or even wound. @@vintagejock3951 The unrealism of Hollywood is simply a means to make sure that the viewer is not stuck at watching a single man fight for 15 minutes against 20 men in a way that makes him look average in the eyes of an untrained fool who think he could last twice as long or make it twice as short. Another reason is that it's much more safer easier for the actors (doubles most of the time) to have be get "wounded" through their limbs and torso than their face. The risks of simulating striking a face with a weapon to result in an actual wound is real and high. That's without considering the make-up issues which are harder to produce, can easily be damage (has to be redone) and can easily be not realist enough. You can fake a wound on the body in a simple way, but faking a wound on a face is complex as the face might have to move (when the actor talk) and such.

    I love this so much you cant even imagine. Historical accuracy. Knights were the Delta force of their day. Trained from a very young age in combat. Swords reflecting off plate armor, the crossbow arrow, all of it. The areas, namely the segment joints were the only real weak points in armor like that. That adrenaline dump puking was a nice touch because that does happen. Fully armored or not, fighting that many, your adrenaline would be off the charts. One other great touch i really liked is you can see the grey in the knights facial hair. The fact he lived that long is a testament of a seasoned warrior.

    it may be difficult in duel, but not in this case as in the video. Cuz no matter how good is you and your armor, you cant stand a chance against three experienced fighters in real fight, at any moment they just can ram you by shield and grab you to lay down, or strong leg kick and you fall). Anti armor weapons cheap and common to, like maces, war hammers. And god bless you, dont be striked by Helberd or Poleaxe. And chainmail armor common thing to, try to deal with it by sword, and you would be surprised, how good it is can be with gambeson or other padded cloth.

  • @Tracer_Krieg

    @@EmersionX The problem is you have to be trained to fight like that. An experience fighter can and will often possess the right abilities to defeat a mob if they are in the right environment, which we do see here in the Knight's tactics. And unfortunately, that's exactly what this group was: an uncoordinated mob of brigands unaccustomed to fighting a trained and experienced knight wearing heavy armor. Sure, they had anti-armor weapons, but those are not one-hit kill weapons. You need to know when and where to use them... which these guys don't. The thing to keep in mind is that these guys are brigands, not trained soldiers. And I kind of imagine that a Knight showing up at their doorstep caused a great deal of panic. Sure, experienced militia and men-at-arms would probably take him down. But experienced these men were not.

    @@Tracer_Krieg Look , you dont need to be trained with weapon at all, you just ram with shield when some body distract a knight, you safely can hug a knight then, and your fellows now can help you to lay him down and thats is. By the way, you can do one good hit in the helmet by mace or hammer, often ppls fall or get stuned after that to. Brigands always had dangerous fighters like deserters, hunters, mercenaries. And knight superiority only when he has armor+horse+lance. Even so, history knows how knighthood lose to well orginized , mercenaries who wear only cloth and polearms. In real life, if it is not a duel, then personal combat skills do not play a big role at all.

  • @Tracer_Krieg

    @Tracer_Krieg

    4 жыл бұрын

    Training is important because of fear. If you notice, the brigands do not immediately swarm the Knight, instead waiting for someone brave enough to do it and then they followed him. Hence why the Knight was able to engage as dispatch them in smaller groups. Fighting a Knight requires group training to overcome that fear, which these guys do not have. If they did, then yes this knight would've been screwed. Additionally, getting a good hit isn't that simple. First, you need to know where to hit him as his helmet was designed to disperse damage because of it's sloping. Second, you need to actually hit him, and that's not easy to do on someone that is moving and is actively trying to kill you. Third, you need to hit him properly. There were several instances where they did, but were unable to generate enough force to actually hurt him because of bad positioning and placement. In many ways, this is akin to the hallway scene in Old Boy. Again, group fear and herding prevented them from over running one guy with a hammer. The same happens here. Again, if these guys were properly drilled and disciplined, then this knight would be dead.

    Honestly, apart from the fight scene (Which is amazing), I really want to give credit of admiration to the actress. I mean, she is REALLY terrified, wounded, exhausted, and out of options. And instead of just playing with her face (Like a lot of actors would do), she let her whole body experience this, she's having trouble catching her breath, she can barely move, every inch of her is in constant tremor, and she is basically broken. And that's kinda the point, right? The last thing that she held on to was hope, and that's the only thing that wasn't broken. Beautiful.

    It was def a well-coreographed fight there is no doubt. Its still had some "plot armour" but it had some very realistic elements to it as well. In this period of time, I think the bandit (if they were experienced) would have known they had to get the knight to the ground. A mass rush to grapple him would have achieved this to then slip a dagger into his vulnerable areas. The short is a bit over-ambitious in the number of bandits b/c they could have easily achieved this tactic with the weight of numbers shown here. If the short had say 5-6 bandits coming in 2 waves then 100% it was a brilliantly choreographed fight and would have been more realistic.

  • @asasas9146

    @asasas9146

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@stav1369 I liked the realism in the battle, but obviously a situation like this would be less plausible in real life, the only way that it could work is if: -Bandits lacks experience (definitely most of them will) -Bandits lacks coordination to overhelm him with numbers (this looks clear the case, since theyre just bandits and were taken totally by surprise, if some of them explained a quick plan to his friends it might work, but since no one opened the mouth it was just everyone for himself) -Bandist fearing the knight (definitely seeing a dude in plate armor so confident and moving with that grace would frigthen me a bit, and this would make the cowards in our team stay out of his range instead of "zerg rushing" him, making our numbers critically smaller for the task) -Knight had a mastery of swordmanship (in this case it does) So overall this is what i think it would be necessary to happen for a single knight to take down a dozen or so men like in this short, and this one looks possible, not very possible, but plausible. It would be a longer fight tough, i dont think half of the bandits had received fatal wounds in the short, so they should had been able to rise up again.

But he had not enough time to "Recover" not in that 3-5 seconds. You would need minuts. And probably not tired just pain. But i did not give up because of that, that is the important part and messages from the scene your are talking about. Is not about let the Knight have time to "Recover" he had not. So many good points.. Plate armour defeats plot armour...Boba Fett nodding quieting when seeing the Barbute...half sword...slow advance whilst glancing both sides...each crushing hammer fist with gauntlet or forearm looked like he was really trying to destroy them, initial skirmish it seemed he was going easy on them simply to save the maiden and then retire but once it got serious no quarter even considered...that spear tip to the helmet was lethal even in rehearsal I bet...the distorted roar as he gets to "UNSTOPPABLE" level at 10:11 gives me the goose bumps... each combatant knew this monster in plate armour was capable of going right through them so they attacked any gap/joint they could with each of their weapons and styles... the actress portrayed all that was needed, the return of the Talisman was gentle and respectful despite his size and brutality...and as St. Michael he fights evil as well as visit upon the hour of death...literally. Best point he stayed full ~Judge Dredd and did not remove the Barbute! Great job!

    The bandits represent everyone who says they could take on a knight and win. Edit: So this comment exploded with a ton of debates, definitely no time to respond to them all. I'll address as best I can. I can say from experience that fighting an armored knight who knows what he is doing is incredibly difficult. I've done HEMA and SCA combat for about three years now, when I first got into it I had five years of fencing at my back. I knew how to handle a sword and was confident in my abilities. For my first few months I got my ass absolutely handed to me, embarrassingly so. I'd suit up in loaned armor, get out there, and get throttled by literally every other armored fighter there. As I got better I figured it would be easier. I was wrong. Turns out they were going easy on me when I was getting my ass beat like a drum and now they could actually put some effort into it. I'd get nervous going into fights against better knights even though I was covered in plate, anyone who has ever gotten rocked by rattan or a steel longsword knows exactly why. Somewhere out there is a video of my armored qualifying bout where I'm getting my ass beat by a viking while desperately yelling out every shot he lands on me while I try not to die for two minutes. And that was after about half a year of training weekly with these guys. I've seen fencers take on 3 opponents at the same time and win against people who had been training with us for months. Even if you've got a plan to group up on someone, unless you train on it repeatedly it almost never works. People get nervous, nobody wants to engage the guy who views you as little more than an obstacle between him and his next water break. Your reaction time might not sync up with the guy next to you, he's dead before you can engage, now it's 2v1, then the next guy goes down, now you're 1v1. Anything more than four people on one and you're in the way of everyone else more than threatening the other guy, AND you're more hesitant to strike unless someone else starts it, no to mention if the first guys to try it go down in the attempt. That's also a safe situation in training, where more importantly than anything you can't run away. In bigger battles I regularly see people flat out avoid and go around knights that are stomping people because they don't want to be a part of that mess. Could these bandits bring down a knight? Certainly. They've got the numbers, the knight is still human, he's not completely invincible. Every fight goes different, but is it unrealistic to say his odds weren't horrid? No. I've done fights with multiple unarmored combatants against one in armor. There are few things more demoralizing than watching a man completely ignore your attack because he knows from experience that you won't land that stab in his chain at the right angle while he drops your buddy. And that's in a controlled environment where everyone is trained and wearing protection. The nuts you would need to charge a man who is not only better than you, and you both know it, but virtually invincible as well borders on suicidal. We're dealing with men wearing gambesons with helmets at most who MIGHT have been in a battle or two I they haven't just robbed people. Even if they had experience it likely means they've seen what knights can do and are well aware of how dangerous they are. Those bandits must of had some of the biggest cajones in Europe or one brain cell between them when they watched all their buddies get demolished and think "Yeah I can take that." I'm not half bad anymore, I teach Lichtenauer and other styles I've learned and studied. I've got multiple tournament victories under my belt now with various weapons and armor configurations, and I can safely say in that situation as a bandit I would have taken a moment to rethink my life choices while giving that knight a wonderful view of my ass disappearing over the horizon.

    In all fairness -. I know that this is a highly choreographed stylized piece, and I don't fault them at all for that it was very enjoyable - that knight would have been very very dead. Certainly these bandits were not highly trained soldiers, but they fought with basically complete disregard of even the usual kind of tactics that anyone who was picked up a sword, Spear, and a bow would understand. It's one thing to say that maybe he would have bested three or four, or maybe five of them, but I somehow don't think 20 at once, considering that they weren't exactly armed with clubs and pitchforks.

    @@prometheus7565 honestly I'm really not. I can't speak to 12th or 13th century Warfare, but I can speak to modern military operations, having served in the Marine Corps myself. There is a tremendous effect of efficacy through numbers. One guy can do something, two guys can do three times as much, four guys can do a multitude more. You cannot really compare a battle, with large formations, maneuver, over a period of many hours or a day, with a single combatant. What happened during the Crusades, or other times in medieval warfare in general is a very different dynamic. 800 guys is still a lot of guys no matter how much you slice it, and a true battle is very different than a duel. In this scenario, even if this knight was highly skilled, and highly-trained, he is simply overmatched. No doubt, he might take three or four, or maybe even a half dozen of those guys with him, and wound a few more, but they're going to get him in the end. In this video - again which I understand is designed to show off sword fighting choreography so that's what it focuses on - the bad guys, the bandits, are ignoring even basic stuff they could do. First, when the big group shows up and there's twenty of them, they could hold back a little bit, and let their crossbowman friend put a couple of bolts on target. He doesn't even start shooting until basically the end of the fight. Even one or two penetrating shots into a major limb is going to reduce the knights combat effectiveness dramatically. Instead he basically does nothing. In addition, they all bunch up together and attack him from the front. They don't even bother to form a perimeter around him, spread out in a circle. That's not advanced military tactics, that's like caveman hunting intuition. In addition, they could have picked up some weapons with better reach, there were a number of spears hanging around that camp. But even just with those basic things, making use of their ranged weapons, spreading out, attacking him from all sides, trying to grab or immobilize some of his limbs, have four or five guys pressing on him all together with their shields negating the reach of his two handed blade, and have other guys just hit him with whatever the hell they have, stab him in his joints whatever. I'm sure it wouldn't be pretty, but that guy would be very very dead, unless he is Lancelot with the blessing of the Lady of the Lake, in which case I guess he could kill them all with laser beams from his eyes. Just my two cents from having some minor fencing experience in high school, and having gone through the Marine combatives course and seeing the limitations of what one man - even a very fit and highly skilled combatant - can do against multiple fully grown men with true hostile intent. *Edit:* fixed all those spelling errors

A 1954 movie where the unarmored squires are said not to stand a chance against the chainmailed guards, despite their superior numbers and training; where the armored knights basically ignore the blows; where they show how the knight is able to esily move in armor (but for a single "fall on his butt" gag the _first_ time the hero dons the suit); where the big star (Curtis) fights his final battle *helmeted;* and where to kill the armored villain with a sword, the hero has to thrust through the armpit gap. 65 years were needed for a realistic depiction of armor to reappear!

They used replicas of the actual swords used by the Cid - down to the XVI century (500 years later) re-hilts! They included a duel with XVII century German greatswords. They gave XI century islamic Andalusi warriors the scimitars of XVII century Turks (from the OTHER side of the Mediterranean, and disregarding that _all of medieval Spain,_ Christian or Muslim, used *the same* straight, double-edged swords!). They got people entering *_on f... horseback_* on the throne room of the King of Leon, FFS! And so on, and so on. Ivanhoe is less hilarious, but not much realistic in termns of weapons and armor. Only bad part of this is the bandits not fleeing when half of them are down. When they know they are outmatched they would have used more ranged attacks, even throwing stones. A single knight, even though as close to a tank as you could get back then, is no match to a large group of fighters with higher mobility if they can run away and throw stuff. They would very quickly wear him out. But a very impressive short non the less. And an amazing portrayal of melee combat as it could have been on a battlefield where no-one had the opportunity to flee.
