The Kinks - Sunny Afternoon | Reaction!

Since it's Independence Day as this is uploaded, I thought I'd come to a great British band! Just from the moody opening, you can tell that the band wanted to go for a different sound here. It's an absolute earworm of a song. Not just because of the lyrics, but from the melody, too. Ray Davies tells one hell of an intriguing story about a guy that we shouldn't really feel any sympathy for. Yes, the guy has lost everything, but he seems like a cruel sob who's lived a luxurious life for much too long.
Thanks for watching!

    One of their greatest songs.

A wonderful thing I discovered in the late 90s was that Ray Davies ran songwriting workshops in the mid-90s. One of his students was a young Damon Albarn of Blur.

Such a fun, witty song. One that, for me, sounds as fresh today as it did when I first heard it in the 1960s.

I always assumed that the 'big fat mamma' was the government (or Inland Revenue - as the tax dept. was named at the time). Great song - and nice review.

@winnywin I might have taken that too literal lol. The government makes sense there.

I love Ray's voice and Dave on backing vocals should also get some credit. David Bowie and Paul Weller were big Kinks fans. The Jam recorded an excellent version of The Kinks' David Watts. Worth a listen.

I believe Morrissey, and for sure, Marr were big fans. For a self-loathing deep cut from 76-77 Era, try Misfits (although the best song from that album was A Rock n Roll Fantasy).

When I saw The Kinks in concert they were the opening act for Hall and Oates. Really?? Even back then, and still today, I think they had the concert lineup in reverse. Hall and Oates should have been opening for The Kinks. Kinks are trendsetters, part of the British invasion. Gotta love The Kinks!

You have to, and I mean HAVE TO, do Dead End Street next. It compliments this song so well. They wrote so many fantastic songs. Hollywood Boulevard (correction - Celluloid Heroes) and Sitting in my Hotel are also classics.

Enjoyable song and reaction. Tax rates were very high in the UK at the time. The Beatles complained about it too. John Lennon moved to the US, a number of high profile actors moved to the continent. I think Ray is on record as saying he didn't want the song to be explicitly about himself so he changed it to the viewpoint of an unsympathetic aristocrat. Though Ray has a tendency of explaining the meaning to his songs differently depending which side of the bed he got out of that day.

The Stones too. They took off to the south of France to record Exile on Main St for tax reasons.

I love the Kinks. A thousand great songs, but one of my faves is The Village Green Preservation Society. If you like Edgar Wright films(Hot Fuzz) then you might have heard a bit of it…;)
