Because it was their first smash hit, everyone mentions it. The follow up smash, All Day and All of the Night was a better constructed song and even more raw. Perhaps this is why during finales, the group incorporated both songs together, as a duet.

You really got me is the start of metal and punk all in one song, from the distortion and the heaviness to the vocal angst, it’s all there. That was great Sam. He described the metal vibe when you asked him how the distorted bar cord made him feel. The basic elements where there. He was emboldened by the grandiose and heavy sound... enter in the first metal song. People have been remiss in assigning the proper due because the Kinks didn’t settle into the metal or punk genres throughout their career, but they had both elements in “you really got me” (and other songs). And that’s all it takes to be first.

Thanks for publishing this incredible and important interview! One more point: Dick Dale, who I do really like, did NOT invent Surf guitar, nor Metal-as he claims! The forerunner of Dick Dale was Link Wray who began his solo instrumentals in 1957. Wray pioneered Surf, Grunge, and Metal. He did so by doing just as Dave Davies did with his amp. Wray punched holes in the amp's speaker cone, creating the legendary -and actually banned song, "Rumble." If you love Surf, listen to "Rawhide." If you love Metal, listen to "Deuces Wild!"
