Ray Davies on Kinks reunion, getting shot, history, musical telepathy & Brexit - extended interview

Even if you don’t remember the Kinks, you’ll know the songs, from Lola to Waterloo Sunset. They’ve been covered so many times and have made Sir Ray Davies one of Britain’s defining songwriters.

Still recording aged 74, his latest solo album Our Country: Americana Act 2 is the second part of a musical diary about his love affair with America. I went to meet him at his studio today, and just as we started our interview, Ray Davies’ phone rang. It was his old Kinks band mate Mick Avory.

    One of the greatest songwriters EVER. Their music has stood the test of time and always will. I also believe his brother, Dave, doesn't get the credit he deserves for his playing, tone and innovation. Everyone remembers Lola, Waterloo Sunset & You Really Got Me (as well they should) but Destroyer, Hatred, I'm Not Like Everybody Else and Living on a Thin Line have always held special places in my heart due for many different reasons. Long live Ray, Dave and the Kinks!

    Either Kink Ray or Dave has at various times said either yes or no. To say it is just Dave is incorrect. Seems like when one says yes the other says no and visa versa. Been a fan since the first Kinks Record. There have many possible Kinks reunion rumors since 1997. None have happened so far. That is not to saw that this will not be the time. I agree the chances are against it. Though thus time fix not angrily say no. Ray has said in recent years he sees no reason for a Kinks reunion. Though Dave and Ray did work on Music with Ray for another project. Out of that there are two songs, unfinished, that would on a Kinks album if it happens. Ray is the best song writer of the last 100 years I think. I hope to see Ray, Dave, and Mick Avery work together again . Though we are running out of time.. I am all for a Kinks reunion! I grew up with 80s music but always loved music from before my time also. Beatles and Stones were good but as a teen growing up in the 80/90s I always wondered why the Kinks weren’t mentioned as much. The lyrics - the social themes of them seemed way ahead of their time and as a teenager their songs just took my breath away - something which I never experienced to the same level with any other past band. I’m just glad at least I’ve had my life enriched by the genius of Ray Davies and the band. I hope he knows he mattered to the people who matter.

He's compelling to listen to, because nothing he says is a fluff or a throw-away. Everything he says matters. He has a kind of a gift that you can't learn. One of my favourite Kinks songs is one that very rarely gets played on the radio. "Celluloid Heroes" is such a beautifully crafted song with brilliant lyrics..with incredible pathos, well worth checking out on KZread. Ray Davies is a living legend. (edit*).. just listening to Ray as I'm typing this, he actually mentions 'celluloid heroes' at 11:10 in the interview. :-)

    We always hear about the Beatles and the Stones, but for me, it was always the Kinks who were the real contenders. Ray Davies, totally redefined the art form when it came to songwriting. They tell you that you shouldn’t meet your heroes, but they definitely got that one wrong. ❤️

    Dave & Ray Davies are The Kinks that never were fully recognized for their contribution to the 60s British Invasion and moving forward. Despite the brothers "sibling" rivalry they churned out memorable hit songs that contain lyrics and music that are a "cut above" the rest!

    The Kinks were every bit as important as The Beatles, Ray Davies turned the song writing focus to England where everyone else still looked across the pond. Ray glamourised London in the way that America had been glamourised by everyone else. He gave London it’s swing and articulated it’s voice-whether he liked it or not! He is a true legend and he is a true treasure. We will not see his like again. God Bless Ray Davies.

    Ray tuned inward from writing pop songs to writing about England as result of "The Kinks" being banned from the United States for some years. In other words, it wasn't entirely his choice to do so.

    Walking along Hollywood Boulevard ('Celluloid Heroes' going through my head), the intersection with Vine St has on all corners, a Star to the Astronauts of Apollo X1, three stars down Vine St, West side is a Star to 'Broncho Billy Anderson' a very early western star (The Great Train Robbery, Son of a Gun, etc), I was stunned to see my own name there. Thanks Ray for such a Wonderful song.

    As a Kinks fan, new releases are always welcome but a touring reformation would be a shadow of their former selves.. Pete Quaife and Jim Redford no longer with us, Dave doing great in the face of his own health issues but not what he was, and bless him Ray...no one should expect him to leap around in his Union Jack jacket anymore but at the same time anything else just wouldn’t meet the expectations of memory and it’s unfortunate that some feel the need to justify those memories in some form with a reunion. If The Kinks feel the need for a live reunion then by all means get together and play a few numbers low key in a local pub but don’t spoil the great legacy by allowing businessmen to exploit it.

  • @luisalonsoecheverria

    Why do you think they're recording a new album? Ray has said in the past he wouldn't pursue a reunion if there wasn't new material to record. Since there is, the reunion is definitely justified.

  • @Mindermaniac

    His name was Jim Rodford, not Redford. I have seen Ray a few times solo with a full band so he can pull off the Kinks material live still to this day - I saw him at Massey Hall, a premier Music Concert hall in Toronto. They deserve to have a lrage touring concert schedule, the could easily fill large concert arenas like they did in the late 70's until the mid 1980's. The reunion is for Ray and Dave and his real fans who know it would be a great tour. Low key pub dates will never happen, that's what the Kast-off Kinks band had done for the last 20 years until Jim Rodford passed away - They played with Mick Avery and John Gosling.

  • @garymadely4371

    @garymadely4371

    luisalonsoecheverria ...as I stated, a reunion for a new Kinks release is more than welcome, but as a touring band they would be a shadow of their former selves - no Pete Quaife and no Jim Rodford. I don’t actually know why they are recording a new album. I can only assume that Ray had material that he thought appropriate for them to use and as they happen to be getting along then why not and that would be great I agree. However, I don’t think getting them on the road for a final reunion tour (which is the general route of reunions these days..) given their obvious frailties, is the way to go...but it’s just a thought....

    Ridiculous! how about they won't be what they were but they will be what they are today and that could be amazing. If you're a real Kinks fan you know that they have always embraced change and transformed themselves. No two Kinks albums are exactly the same.
