The transition from This Beat Goes On to Switchin' to Glide is one of those transcendent moments in rock music, where you can't believe something this good exists. I was aware of this song because of my dad listening to album rock radio in the car in the '90s, but it's only now, closer to middle-age, where I can appreciate fully how great this is. Like "Driver's Seat" or "Ah! Leah!", it's one of those songs that's easy to fall through the cracks for years if not decades, but then you hear it again and just say "oh my god, THIS song!!!"

Everytime I hear this song, it's suddenly summer and I'm going northbound on the I-94 to Six Flags Great America (Gurnee, IL) and just over the tree tops to my left, I can see a section of the American Eagle rollercoaster and my adrenaline kicks in. THAT is where I go every-time I listen to this song. And for that, I must thank The Kings for a great song that's truly a time machine for me.

We went there when our 8th grade class scored a free trip there. I remember this song on the radio of the bus! Of course the rest of my time in Johnsburg Jr High was hell. I was so antisocial and a target.... It was called Marriott's Great America at the time.
For me this song will never grow old. It's sooo cool, makes me feel 40 years younger. You just can't buy that, thanks!!!

My cousins in Ireland rock it on Fridays too! & I know some girls in Ukraine that are using it to keep their spirits up, restore a little normal energy in an insane time, jump around & dance & let loose for a few instead of swallowing the worries. In my opinion, the greatest Canadian rock n’ roll song of all time. No matter my mood, this song makes me happy. And I live my life by the words “I don’t give a hoot about what people have to say, I’m laughing as I’m analyzed.” Zero knocked it out of the park with that lyric.

They weren't a one hit wonder. Their music is really very good, take a Sunday afternoon and check it out. It's amazing that well written songs got on the radio in any time era. At least before 2000 there was still a chance of a great band, like The Kings, to get on the radio.

A while back, I worked in radio. I found out they had a remastered version of the CD. I wrote to find out how to purchase one for the station. They sent me a personal copy with a note from Zero to play often! And we did, every Friday at 5. I still have it...along with my mom's cassette from 1980!

I heard it too!
I had open heart surgery in 2017 and had complications that made me feel like a zombie. I didn't want to even talk to anybody, much less listen to music. For four months I slept in a chair because I couldn't breathe. This is the very first upbeat song I played when I started to feel a little better. Just thought you might like to know that. I've always loved this song.

Starting around 1983 or so, the largest rock station in Columbus, WLVQ FM96.3 started playing "This Beat Goes On\Switchin' to Glide" every Friday at 5PM. It became a tradition that went on for decades. (They still might do it for all I know.) This song became synonymous with the weekend and good times! So everytime I hear it, I'm flooded with 40+ years of great memories, everytime. It transports me back to being a late teen early twentysomething young man in the 80s getting ready to go out on a date or just hang with friends. Thank you, Kings! This song has been a priceless gift! Mr Zero, Dave Diamond, Sonny Keyes, you did a good thing when you loosed this track into the world fellas!

I DJed clubs and then went into mobile (better money back then lol). The song did work at a few weddings back in 1988. Used to play Paradise by the Dashboard Lights, and Your Love's Like Bad Medicine too, the young ones liked those, but the parents paying for the whole thing sure didn't. lol

We understand that of course. And we wish it was different. But those who are aware of it seem to like it a lot (like yourself hopefully) and that is the point we were trying to make. We know we are an obscure one-hit wonder type of band, we live with it every day, but these great comments make us feel that we did a good job and when we had the chance we got on base.

One thing I love about being Canadian is the amount of great artists our country has and continues to produce. I grew up in Southern Ontario and heard so many great bands that made an impact on my life, from the Kings to Max Webster to Rough Trade, so on and so forth. Thank you for giving us all great memories to cherish.

@@markd8469 I would never forget April Wine but they are well known at least across Canada and even had some success in the US, if I remember correctly I think they even had a couple of videos on Mtv in the early 80's. I was just trying to give props to a couple of bands that didn't get as much airplay and attention back in the 70s-80s outside of Canada or southern Ontario, Max Webster in particular.

Just inherited my Dad's old record player. I went through the old albums I kept, and there it was: my 1980s copy of The Kings Are Here. It has lost nothing over 40 years. Also found Amazon Beach, ya!!! I still know all the lyrics to every song.
