Queen Elizabeth's side of family was not the first to be in line to the throne. Her father became king only because his brother advocated the throne to marry an American divorce. Queen Elizabeth's father was the Prince Harry of his time.

It's more that most Royal families in Europe have good relations with each other. Them kissing each other on the cheek has nothing to do with them seen each other as family. Especially on the Spanish side they do that regulary and it's considered a normal thing to do when greeting people.

Queen Victoria was a great.........grandmother to both Queen Elizabeth and King Felipe. Felipe's great-grandmother, Victoria Eugenia, was a granddaughter of Victoria. So yes, they are cousins. There is also a relationship with Prince Philip as Felipe's mother Sofia was a Greek princess.

King Felipe is related to her Majesty the Queen like most of the royal families in Europe. So nice to see him kissing the Queen on the cheek. Such a dear gesture. And her Majesty beamed and smiled. Also nice to see: Prince Philip and Letizia from Spain riding together in the next carriage after the Queen of England and the king of Spain. At least the most European royals know their duties and how to represent their country and folk to the rest of the world whereas politicians sometimes seem to be forgetting that.

Some people in these comments seem surprised that he kissed her. But the coverage of one of her other jubilees showed her greeting other royals before a dinner she hosted. All her related royals greeted her like this: Margarethe of Denmark, Harald of Norway, Wilhelmina of The Netherlands, etc.

To understand the kiss, one must know three things: First, it is custom in Spain and Hispanic America to greet with a kiss (especially among family). Secondly, His Majesty is a third cousin once removed of Her Majesty (His Majesty being a great-great great grandson of Queen Victoria). Thirdly, they are also personally close.

You missed out 1 incomplete point. The kiss, is majority European from the start in the old days. Only today some countries in Europe stop practising it. But Italy, Spain, France, Greece, Balkans, some Eastern European countries still practise this generally in their culture. And if you are discussing outside Europe; then you have Arabs and North Africans that does this way longer before Hispanic America.

As a spanish person Who was living in the UK for 2 years I will say: I'm against monarchy anyway because is an expensive theatre, but feeling respect for the English one which is more serious than Spanish one. The wedding of Prince William with Kate Middleton meant more money; but the wedding of Prince Felipe with Letizia Rocasolano meant money losses; just for to start because OMG if I speak about the abdicated king who have to many non-recognized sons/daughters.

I remember all the tacky paper painted crowns after his visit on lampposts. 😂. Think the feeling was one of ‘If we must host, we must’. Queen gets on better with Margrethe II of Denmark. Probably wouldn’t get in her personal space too.

What a lovely family reunion

I don’t think there is any embarrassment in HM Queen's expression - she fully expected to be kissed and then to have her hand lightly kissed. It is the way of European royalty who have a family connection. King Felipe VI or Philip VI (Felipe Juan Pablo Alfonso de Todos los Santos de Borbón y Grecia) is a great-great-great-grandson of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and thus 3rd cousin once removed of Elizabeth II. I actually suspect she was surprised at how tall he is!

There is nothing awkward. Their Majesties are of equal status and it is quite conform etiquette that the king then formally kisses the queen.

I think the Queen found him very handsome...look at her smile!

The King of Spain and Queen Elizabeth are cousins through Queen Victoria and Christian IX of Denmark. King Felipe is a descent of Christian IX of Denmark through his mother Queen Sofia, who was born a princess of Greece. He is also related closely to Prince Phillip, who was born a prince of Greece. There are a lot of familial connections between the British and Spanish royals.

Queen of Spain is an impeccable woman. Very elegant indeed.

True. The granddaughter of Queen Victoria (and also niece of Edward VII), Victoria Eugenia, was married with King Alfonso XIII of Spain. Both are the great-grandfathers of actual King.

If you look into his Royal bloodline king Felipe it is seriously Royal. He is related to more royal families than Queen Elizabeth.

I admire her majesty. She is a wonderful person.
