This film is so cringe inducing because we've all had these fantasies at some time. Of course we wouldn't go to Rupert's extreme lengths, but we've all fantasized about being famous, hanging with the in-crowd, playing golf with our favourite star. And needless to say, fantasies are painful things - given they expose our limitations and failures. But Rupert has no way of seeing himself, he has no self reflection, for that reason he's like a Freudian case-study, demonstrating extreme behaviour that to a lesser extent we all engage in. There's a little Rupert Pupkin in all of us. And there's a neat dramatic irony going on, as in the Chat-show host Jerry Langford has had enough of fame, he's jaded with the fans, the ratings, the guests. It's just a job, and a boring job at that. Rupert is willing to commit a serious crime to become famous, whereas Jerry Langford, just wants to play golf and be left alone. Fame ain't what it's cracked up to be. So Langford is ultimately a fraud - selling a fantasy of a clubbable celebrity world that doesn't actually exist. The people he shoots the shit with are not real friends, they're just plugging some new movie, or song before moving on to the next gig. And it's that fantasy of the clubbable celebrity circuit of chat shows, gossip columns, and agony aunts - that Pupkin craves. His risible comedy routine is just a means to an end. Rupert doesn't want to put in the hard-work as a stand-up comic, which he'd probably fail at anyway - he just wants access to the celebrity culture. A fantasy world where there's always a smiling face - happy to see you, to share a joke or a funny anecdote. The warm, soothing embrace of TV. A new opiate of the masses that equates to either heaven or hell depending on your perspective

@trev moffatt. Hey Trevor. Judging by your goofy comment, I think you totally missed the point of this film. You say Rupert wouldn’t have made it as a stand up ? He killed it. M urdered! And it was his first time on stage. He is a natural. Even the director thought his writing was funny. This is a gritty commentary on corporate media, and how tough it was to break into the the comedy scene of the 70s. All Rupert needed was a break. The moral of the story, is never give up. Even after constantly being rejected, does Rupert go home and sulk? Does he go and beat his girl ? Kick the dog down the stairs? No, he is resilient, resourceful, and tenacious. But most importantly, retains a positive outlook, no matter what life throws at him. The youth of today could learn a lot from someone like Rupert, and judging by your attitude, so could you.

When the movie was over I asked Mr B what he thought, and he said something I'll never forget -- "It kinda left a bad taste in my mouth." I think a lot of people felt that way, which is probably why it tanked. _I_ loved it, and it's still in my top 10 of all time.

Chief Scheider - It’s a brilliant film, I was shocked I had never heard of it. The premise of humans idealizing and following others we perceive to be “better” than us.. just that basic concept, hits too close to home for comfort for a lot of people. That’s the only reason I can find why people were are so turned off by it.

So here's my theory. Jerry Langford started out as a comedian and after one shot on Jack Paar, he became an overnight sensation and soon got his own late night show, but he struggled in the ratings because he was up against the #1 late night show, hosted by Murray Franklin, then after (SPOILER ALERT) Murray's on-air murder by the Joker, audiences soon shifted to Jerry's show and he had the #1 show.

The whole movie shifts between what is fantasy and what actually happens. It seems like he's just this nut, but then, you really, OMG, he might have really hit the big time! It was cool seeing this in a trad movie theatre when it came out, in NYC near Times Square. But again, my friend who saw it with me kept saying, "Rupert reminds me so much of your husband!" Now, THAT was weird. (And very true. 12 years of married weirdness to someone I don't think I actually knew at all.)
