The Kim Kardashian shapewear controversy: what happened? ǀ Justine Leconte

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Kim Kardashian recently announced the launch of her new shapewear line, named "kimono solutionwear". It caused an uproar, mostly among Japanese people, and the hashtag #kimohno started to go viral.
I researched the backstory, to better understand why the new line was perceived as a case of cultural appropriation and what trademark laws mean for her future business.

@Osito Kintsugi She meant that kimonos 👘 and shapewear are two different types of clothing, with two very different uses. Kimono is clothing worn on the outside, and shapewear is underwear worn on the inside. Plus, Kim's shapewear line is clearly targeted at women that want to create a trim and curvy figure, which the vast majority of Japanese women don't want and what a kimono also doesn't create (a kimono creates the coveted slim and small-waisted look).

In Australia we have 'Ugg boots' which refers to any sheep's wool slippers. They are widely worn here and produced by Australian companies. However the term 'Ugg boot' was copyrighted by an American company and the term now can't be used by any other company that produces them even though it was a generally used term here and not a brand name. They are obviously not as culturally significant as a kimono or saree but it is an example of what can happen when a foreign company copyrights a word used widely in a specific country.

I must admit I didn’t know anything about this scandal because when it comes to Kim Kardashian, or any Kardashian, I automatically tune it out. It’s because of things like this that I just can’t abide. The Kardashians seem to think the world revolves around them and because of that thinking they just do what the want and the consequences be damned. I’ve never understood the fascination with her and or her family. I still don’t. Justine your insight into this situation was spot on and presented in the most professional and courteous way possible. I admire your integrity. I admire you! Take care!

@Tasia Tyler they don't 'seem to think'.. they do think. This is a close up and center view of narcissism. Particularly the mother, Kris; who was the driving force of the 'brand'. I normally don't follow this gossipy business, but her ex husband Robert Shapiro's next wife sold his diary to an America media source (what was she thinking). It contained a psychological evaluation of Kris that Robert had done when they were divorcing. I did read it b/c it was a factual evaluation done by a doctor. It was chilling. She is a verified narcissist, and I will say, what you see is what you get, there is nothing deeper behind the public face.

Id say ugg boots in Australia, not quite the same situation but similar. An ugg is a descriptor to the type of boot it is - like a ballet flat or a stilleto, yet an american business turned it into a brand and trademarked it almost world wide. Local maker(s) had to go to court internationally to be able to use the term Ugg within AU/NZ. America has a history of taking something and monopolising it to make money.

Am I the only one who thinks that the word Kimono would have been genius if it hadn't been a word for a Japanese clothing already? I mean, it's a portmanteau of the words Kim and Mono, and the undergarment that she's launching is a one-piece and also looks MONOchrome when it matches the wearer's skin perfectly. That's what I originally thought when I heard the name. However it's of course weird now that we know the same word is commonly used for another style of clothing, so it's better that she changed it, but I still liked the original idea.

Romandy You’d think with her new rebranding campaign going on they’d be more picky about what press they get. If she wants to be taken seriously, and she does seem to be trying, doing the seriously dumb and controversial stuff is not going to work. If she wants hope of succeeding, she needs to pick a lane and stay in it.

Thank you Justine. I agree with all your conclusions. I have never understood this family’s popularity. The kindest comment I can make about the people following this family is that they are naive and easily duped. I have never watched or “followed” their bizarrely public lives, therefore I cannot be an informed dissenter. But I am quite happy to stay above it all! Thank you for your ever thoughtful and educational content.

I think I have watched perhaps 5 minutes of all the Kardashians shows. I did watch the series about Caitlyn's first year as a female which I found more interesting than all the rest of the family combined. The embarrassing public demonstrations, the ridiculous names the babies are given, and all the rest of it are just not of any interest for me. I am with you, Silvia, I don't understand their popularity.
