My Grandmother had taught me a line......wear a dress tight enough to show you are a woman and loose enough to show you are a lady. And I have lived my life by that moto....and the compliments still come in. Thank you Grandma!!!!!!

I still have my iconic dress. I sewed it 11 years ago, when I was going through a painful and upsetting divorce. I had bought the fabric about 5 years before on a trip to London, and when I stopped in front of the stand where it sat, I had never seen any material so perfect - white cotton with a print of raspberry roses and Italian street scenes, all done in a sketchy 50s style. The dress was sewn from a 1959 pattern, and every time I wear it, I feel wonderful, confident, powerful. Every woman should have a dress like that!

I can picture that print in my mind. I love that style, I'm always drawn to it when I see it. What a great find for you! Always keep that dress, never let it go!

My most memorable dress was my Easter dress when I was in my early 20s. I had to wait until payday to get a dress so it was the day before Easter and I was heading out in search of the perfect dress. I was always big on looking my best for Easter. I asked my Mom what she was wearing and she was going to wear a dress that she had already worn a hundred times. I realized that my Mom had always done that, even though she had made sure that my brothers and I had new outfits. Money was tight when we were kids so that was her sacrifice. Sooo...I went out and spent my money on a dress for my Mom. I then went home and dug through the hope chest where my Mom kept material, most of which was leftover from projects. I came across a couple of yards of white seersucker material with little blue flowers on it. I asked my Mom if I could use it, and since it was intended for curtains for a room that had since changed color schemes she said I could. I carefully maximized the use of the material and made a ruffled elastic waisted skirt and a camisole with a peplum and shoestring straps. I made the outfit up the night before for me and gave my Mom her new store-bought dress on Easter morning. There was nothing special about my dress. The skirt wasn't as full as it should have been. The ruffle was barely ruffled. The peplum was pieced together out of 3 pieces. But, every time I wore that dress I was reminded that some things are more important than looking like you stepped out of a fashion magazine.

I too have a personal iconic dress. Back in the early80’s when I was a youngish teenager, my parents were going through a hard time; my father was ill, and couldn’t work, my mother has health issues of her own, so money was tight. I had been invited as a date, to a boy friend’s sports awards dinner and I really wanted to go but did not have the money for a new fancy dress. A friend of mine suggested we check out thrift shops so I headed down to a downtown street known for second-hand stores... there, rifling through piles of clothes, I found the perfect vintage dress. It was an late fifties/early 60’s dress in a beautiful crepe (was it silk material? I don’t know but it draped beautifully) , tailored expertly with a full skirt, and a wide scoop neckline - it all magically fit me perfectly. I think I got it for $11!! I took it home, carefully cleaned and ironed it (with help from mom, thank god I didn’t ruin it), and I wore it to that dinner. The best part? It was a rich emerald green, and at the time my hair was long, curly and coppery brown, and my skin tones worked like a dream in that colour. It was a very bold colour choice. At the time pastels were very popular. I stood out like a peacock in a washed out henhouse at the dance. Did I mention that I loved to dance and this dress had fantastic movement? I was a bit of a sensation that night. It was the first of many vintage finds that I subsequently unearthed (the black velvet dress with 30 tiny rhinestone buttons down the back comes to mind)..As a teenager the need to conform is strong but vintage allowed me to express myself as a creative personality in a unique but stylish way that suited my body and my budget perfectly. To this day, I wear bits of vintage intermingled with more modern choices and still find thrifting enormous fun.

A bit of trivia about Marilyn’s “subway dress”: it actually belonged to Debbie Reynolds, who lent it to Marilyn (or the wardrobe person) for the movie. A duplicate was later made for Marilyn to wear to promote the movie, but the original belonged to Debbie Reynolds.

My wedding dress...1977...still have it with the confetti....my husband died a few years ago but the dress came with me when I moved house ❤️

Hi Justine. One of the movie dresses which I have always loved is the brown and white polka dot dress worn by Julia Roberts at the Polo match in Pretty Woman. It was in the eighties when big shoulders and shiny materials were popular. This dress was simple yet stunning, being styled to show off the female form without being over the top. I have bought similar dresses over the years and have always felt so feminine and powerful in them. The one I have at the moment is the closest in design to the original and I will never let it go. It’s interesting that even though the red evening dress Julia wore in the movie while going to the opera is the most stunning dress in the movie, it is the simple brown and white polka dot one which has become the most memorable. Probably because every woman has a chance to wear this dress. It is attainable.

OMG THANK YOU !!!! How could I forget, I knew there was something more about this brown polka dot print, as I am so in love with it every time I see a woman wearing it ! This year I saw so many women because Zara had one, and I was close to buying it even though it is polyester (that I HATE) and fast fashion, but I resisted, did not purchase it, and every time I see a girl with it I feel soooooo frustrated and didn't know why 😝🤣

3 years ago I bought a red Michael Kors faux wrap dress. I was about 20 kilos overweight and depressed. I suffered from anxiety and poor self image but something about that dress “spoke” to me. I never wore it because it was so figure hugging and the red is very “look at me!”. Recently though, following a 15 kilo loss and a self improvement journey of many highs and lows, I finally wore it! What a moment! I felt..amazing! I felt like myself. I felt full of life, positivity, gratefulness and excitement. It helped that my husband couldn’t stop staring😊. So yes! I totally get how a dress can be either life- altering or put the cherry on top of a great life moment. Thank you this video, as always I’ve learned so much! 🥰

I was in 6th or 7th grade, younger to my classmates by a good 2 years so physically I still looked very much like a chubby little child. I was good at studies and other activities but always felt a little awkward and shy around the other girls. One day, I had to go for an award show for a singing competition that I had won. My parents took me out to get a new dress for the event. But! Instead of getting my usual kiddy frocks, I got this deep maroon velvet shift dress, it was sleeveless and had a choker collar and was quite short. There were no frills or flounces, it was almost severe for a 9 year old. But when i wore that dress and went up on stage I sure felt like a star! I'm in my 20s now and even now I remember the thrill that wearing that dress gave me, I went from being an awkward child to feeling confident. And even today when I am shopping for clothes, I try to pick pieces that will recapture that feeling :) That's my very long story!

What a lovely story. There is a school of thought now that a very bright child, such as you, should not be moved too fr ahead at school because it can be very challenging socially when she is so much younger. Was this the case for you, in hindsight?

Thank you Justine! My mother, an artist and a talented seamstress, made the Mondrian dress for me in 1966. I was an eleven year old stick so she was able to adapt the pattern panels to duplicate the red, blue, yellow original. I was so proud to wear that dress and wore it until it no longer zipped. I never saw another dress like it in person. My own creation was a find from a charity shop in the late 70''s: A beautiful, sapphire blue, floor length sheath dress of a very high quality silk brocade. The fabric was marked A.N. Shing Hong Kong. The bodice didn't flatter, but the fabric was so luxe I had to have it! I removed the bodice and made it a floor length skirt. With a white silk blouse it was a very formal look that never dated itself. The quality of the textile did all the work. I've worn it with confidence for over 20 years. I still would if my waist hadn't expanded!

My most iconic dress was a black linen sheath dress sewn for me by my mother. She was quite the seamstress and tailor. Simple, and elegant, it was void of adornment, so mom lent me a pair of black Swarovski earrings she got in Germany, a black clutch with tiny black crystals hand sewn in it, dressed me in it (with heels and sheer silk stockings) turned me away from her to walk down a hallway toward a full length mirror, and said, “Walk!” Instructions followed, “Hold your shoulders back! Head up! Chin parallel to the floor!” And as I watched myself, I understood, I got it! Epiphany! I wore that dress to a 10 year high school reunion, and for the FIRST time in my life, I turned heads when I walked into the room. I keep that dress in my cedar chest now!

Princess Diana’s black dress has to be my favorite! She looked incredible wearing it.

My personal iconic dress may not seem like that much but for me it truly stands out: it's a floor length, dark mint green chiffon dress, all flowy and smooth, shoulder free with a sweetheart neckline. I wore it to my year 12 graduation and it kind of shocked everyone, because I was the one usually wearing all black everything, ripped tights, converse shoes, deathcore band shirts etc. and now I was standing there in a gown and with the perfect matching high heels and lipstick. I for sure could not stay in those heels for long, as I was not used to it whatsoever, so I simply took them off when we got seated and went on for the rest of the graduation barefoot, leaving my shoes under my seat. Not a problem as my feet were covered at all times because of the length of the dress. After the ceremony we got our picture as a whole class taken and the photographer seated us on the stairs in the entrance so everyone would be visible. He straight up put me in the middle and had all the other girls have their knees turning towards me, they all were wearing a variation of a little black knee length dress, and so it happened that I was chilling it in the middle of the stairs like a queen, cross-legged under my dress, barefoot, with all the other lovelies looking like my personal court on the photo. Great time, I have to say!

Something you skipped over is that it wasn’t just that black was the color of mourning, but because of the devastating losses of WWI and the worldwide influenza pandemic, combined with a change in social attitudes, there had been unprecedented numbers of women in mourning dress visible in public and social space in Europe and the U.K. So when Chanel “imposed” black, and women of fashion embraced it, it was a sort of retrieval of life and beauty from loss. That potential for meaning is part of what makes fashion an art form, not just a status marker.

Nicole most royal women don’t- look at Duchess Catherine. She has lovely style, usually leaning toward the 40s style tea dress for her daytime looks. It’s all very well made, very well fitted, the style suits her athletic figure very well... but it’s not in any way daring or new. In fact, it’s very vintage! It’s super classy, but it’s not eye catching or adventurous. It’s the very opposite. Playing it safe is what royal women do. So the very fact that Diana stepped out of playing it safe, and in such a big way, really did make a statement. Because even separated from Charles, she was still the mother of the future King if England, and was expected to be very safe and classic in her wardrobe choices. Though one could argue that she did make a splash with that massive wedding dress, and the Sloane fashion she gravitated to at the beginning- which we now see as incredibly dowdy, but was very much the thing at the time. She did eventually grow into being a fashion icon, but it took many years, and for her to grow a lot of confidence that she simply didn’t have at 19.

@@paulacassidy9993 So very true, I felt that in this interesting video about iconic dresses, there was a little something missing in the explanation given. I believe that you found it. It's not just the statement, or the scandal, the edginess... that you can see everywhere and it doesn't mean that these things will last. What we are all looking for is something meaningful, that concentrates meaning and expresses the moment.

OMG Justine - this is beyond the point of this video but I just wanted to share that today I have finally confirmed for myself what is my real style - the style that really opens up my inner beauty. It's grunge. I've been dancing around this topic for so many years and kept coming back to this answer. But it came together today. I saw your video about Kibbe's system some time ago and according to that system I concluded that I was a pure classic and tried to mimic that style for some time. It didn't feel totally right, I mean, it was right, but it wouldn't give me a kick, and come on, grunge is not on Kibbe's list of recommendations as it was created before grunge even came about! But today I went and bought by first Dr Martens, and I was wearing my usual black leather jacket, my usual khaki trousers, and when I tried those Dr Martens, it all just came together! I just felt so right, like I am myself. Not super stylish, not super attractive, I am just myself, and this is how I really look, this is who I am inside. Obviously I looked amazing, and people were looking at me, but that didn't matter, I just felt myself, and that was the most important to me. I finally saw that in the mirror. And then I realised why I love so much Gwen Stefani and Kate Moss's styles, why my posture and feeling of comfort transforms effortlessly when I wear my favourite leather jacket and boots, I found my style! I remember you also had a video about finding your style and you said that it is what you would want to wear all day everyday, what you will feel most comfortable and good in. I am so happy! I think I am finally finding myself. And it is thanks to you for your beautiful videos that educate and inspire us about fashion and style. Anna, I adore your story. I'm not sure if I've got the right thing in my mind with the boots, but we're talking about the ankle boots with the thick treaded soles, yes?

I have in my life a dress that broke contemporary trends, was unusual, and then many people wanted to buy it from me :) But this dress will never be for sale, it is my own handmade wedding dress. When I wore it, the most fashionable were the generous dresses on the racks, or in the shape of a mermaid. I sewed a very comfortable dress reminiscent of the costumes of ancient Greek women. In addition, I hand-woven silver lace (tatting) with it, emphasizing the cut under the bust with red Swarovski crystals woven into it. Only after a few years such simple dresses appeared in the repertoire of wedding dresses. :) Well, I do not meet the requirement of a famous person for my creation to become a style icon, but locally I succeeded :)

You forgot to give mention to The Addams Family’s, Morticia Addams black dress. It’s pretty iconic. I didn’t read all 1200 hundred comments so I don’t know if anyone else noticed. Thanks for your channel, I appreciate it.

It is the most sexy, flattering, and wonderful dress I have ever owned, and just for that, I haven't worn it yet. I try it on frequently, but it's a bit like keeping a card hidden in poker to pull out when you need it. ' That's a Christmas present for you, Anne',said Matthew shyly. 'Why - why - Anne, don't you like it? Well now - well now.' For Anne's eyes had suddenly filled with tears. 'Like it! Oh, Matthew!' Anne laid the dress over a chair and clasped her hands. 'Matthew, it's perfectly exquisite. Oh, I can never thank you enough. Look at those sleeves! Oh, it seems to me this must be a happy dream.'

Lovely! I've had my little black dress for two decades and it has always saved me when "I don't have anything to wear" for a special occasion. But my favourite dress is my wedding dress (which sadly doesn't fit me anymore) , which was made by my mom ...A priceless souvenir of her...

I remember falling in love with the dresses in the movie "In the mood for love". Traditional chinese style and goreous fabric prints

Most memorable dress was a long sleeveless jersey silk evening dress, coral red with here and there a bit animal print, a long giraffe on the left lower part where my thigh is, and a deep front split beginning half way my thighs. I was 15 years old and I have been wearing this dress for years, during sunday evening dinners (we used to dress for dinner in weekends) until I went to study and left my parental home. Later on, I did not fit in my dress anymore and I sold it. Even later, I lost a few kilos again and until this day, I am 50, I regret to have sold this dress. Never saw such color fabric with suchprint again. My Mom made that dress herself, just like our other festive evening clothing. And now she feels to old to do that one more time :)

I remember being around 10 or 11 years old and it was getting close to Christmas. I always got a new dress for the holidays. I remember that Christmas my dress was made by my Grandmother. It was modeled after a Scottish kilt but in Christmas colors. It was the most amazing dress and I wore it all the time. Even after the holidays because it made me feel like a movie star AND because it was made for me and no one else had anything like it! Loved this video! I know that feeling.😊My mother sometimes sew something for me and when someone says that they like it and ask me where I bought it I always happily and proudly say how my mother made that excuslivley for me. Then I am thinking oh dear God how wonderful my mom is and it just warms my heart.

Tasia Tyler I remember when we got special dresses for the holidays. Every Easter and Christmas, I loved picking out my dresses. I wore puffy dresses with crinolines way older than anyone should. But, I loved all the satin and lace, white kid gloves, hats. My favorite dress was also made by my Grandmother. She made all my cousins dresses with similar styles and fabrics, but different for each of us. Your post made me think of that and how special that made me feel.

To finish up my mechanical engineering degree, I supported an NGO called QueenTech based in Ghana that designs and builds food processing equipment designed for women with small businesses that make gari, a shelf-stable cereal made from cassava/yucca/tapioca (all the same root vegetables). We provide microfinancing so more women can afford our products and expand their businesses in different ways. We do routine maintenance on our machines, always incorporating feedback from our users to improve affordability and durability. You can find QueenTech on facebook and we are looking to expand the business if anyone wants to donate! Now to get to the dress - to work on this project I was able to visit Ghana twice to build these machines and meet our operators - an incredible experience. The women in West Africa have impeccable style. Many many people have clothes made by local tailors in gorgeous block-printed fabric. There are thousands of patterns in all sorts of colors and shades with meaningful Ashanti symbols! In the central market in Kumasi I bought this gorgeous royal purple, black, and goldenrod pattern. A lovely tailor made it into a new-look inspired tea-length boat-neck dress. The print featured these gorgeous disk patterns which the tailor impeccably incorporated into the neckline! It is the most special dress I have by far

African designs are so under-appreciated. I love the use of colors and creative shapes. Wish it would become more acceptable to wear non-mainstream clothes in daily life. 👏👏

How about anything/everything Grace Kelly wears in the 1954 movie Rear Window? Especially the black and white gown. Stunning. Edith Head costume designer.

Yes, I was thinking the same; especially the green suit with the pearl bracelet, which is my sisters' favorite piece of jewelry...she mentions it every time we watch the movie.

My most memorable dress was a red DVF (I translated my figure to centimeters just for you, Justine, in my prime I was 93, 58, 94). I called it my "danger" dress because I had to fight men off, and learned never to wear it unless I wanted a LOT of male attention!

Loved the fashion history lesson! My favorite dress was my wedding dress. I married the year after Princess Diana so my dress was very similar in style to hers, with a much shorter train, and big puffy sleeves (leg of mutton, maybe ?) It was purchaxed at Neiman Marcus, which was a huge event for my budget at that time. Im happy to report Im still married to that handsome husband 😍

I wore a costume of Uncle Sam I made myself in the 6th grade to the 4th of July celebration in my school in Ecuador. We were learning more about America and I just went one step into the extra. A lot of people liked it, but most people in my grade thought it was too much and acted very jealously because of all the attention I got. I learned that day that trying to make everyone happy is a fools errand.

Hi Justine, I think the green Versace Dress worn by Jennifer Lopez in 2000 was missing. I mean it startet Google images. I am still waiting on my iconic dress moment;-)

I can think of 3 dresses I loved wearing. The first I received as a hand me down when I was 12. The fabric was cotton in a dark red with a black toile’ print. Fitted bodice with a scoop neckline and a slightly flared skirt. Exactly the right red for me with my fair complexion and green eyes. I always got compliments whenever I wore it. The second was a green dressy cocktail type dress with a similar style as above. I was 14 and very slim and always felt very grown up and dressed up when I wore it. The third was a very modern mini dress royal blue with a bright yellow ban at the drop waist and down one side. With my hair cut short in twiggy style I made quite the impression on behind the times South Carolina in 1968.

When I was 14 my mother bought me a rich dark red velvet smock dress ( early 70s ) from a local boutique, I will never ever forget it, puffed caps, penny round collar, beautifully made, I dreamt the night before wearing it, it somehow was taken from my room, I woke in great distress and will always remember it Was a nightmare, as my dress was still hung there.

I would have added in the Versace Safety Pin dress worn by Elizabeth Hurley in 1994.

The first dress I can remember was my 8th grade dance dress. 'Gunne Sax' by Jessica McClintock. Dropped waist dress..loved it!

Answering your question it's interesting to admit that the "most iconic outfit" I've ever worn was also black. What I wore was a pair of black wide pants made in flowing fabric and a black long sleeve t-shirt. What made it so iconic (or made me feel like being iconic because of the compliments) is the silhouette, because those pants had a nice waistband that accentuated the waistline. It seems like a mix of black color and a nice silhouette is what truly makes any dress/outfit iconic :D Thank you for this informative video!

What about Mrs Jackie Kennedy. I admired her style. Simple and elegant mostly. Many dresses from Valentino etc.

Agreed. Think everything she wore turned out to be timeless pieces. She was classic yet not boring and safe.

Hilary Swank’s 2005 navy blue Oscar dress designed by Guy Laroche is so classic and timeless. Not to mention she looked absolutely timeless. Her dress is iconic to me.

My most special outfit is the two-piece navy and white ruffled dress I wore the night I got engaged. Though that was 31 years ago, it still hangs in my closet, and always will.

Thanks for all your videos Justine. Youhave changed the way I look at fashion, style and textiles. My favourite iconic dress is Princess Diana's Revenge dress. My favourite dress had similarities. It was a fitted black velvet button down dress with a sweetheart neckline. It made me feel quite glamourous as at the time I was dairy farming and spent most of my time in dirty overalls! I wore it on several occasions in my thirties. I am now 62 and wish I still had this lovely dress. Sigh!!!

When I was 20months old, I was the flower girl at my parents’ wedding. I wore a pretty little white dress, with little flowers sewn on, it had a thicker fabric underneath and a thin overlay. It’s not just because it was pretty (though it was), or because of the event (though that’s pretty important too- it’s almost exactly 30 years later and my parents just jetted off to Europe for their anniversary), but- my nana made that dress from start to finish. She was a very accomplished seamstress, and she made a few outdoors for me as a child. But that dress is the one I would say is the most special.

I also really appreciated Gaga’s meat dress. Not because it was fashionable, but because of the message. She’s certainly not one to shy away from sharing her opinions!

In 1977, at the age of 14, I flew to Paris on a trip with some of the students from my French class and our teacher and chaperones. My grandmother and I shopped for a special outfit for me to wear on the flight, and chose rust colored corduroy gaucho pants with a matching top, and leather boots. I loved that outfit, I loved that dear grandma, and I loved that beautiful city, Paris.

Can’t beat the little black dress. Simple but elegant

In the 1980's, I made a prairie dress for myself in fine wale corduroy. It was somewhat of a challenge gathering the ruffles for the skirt and decorative ruffle for the cuffs and yoke, but I did manage to sew it all together. The color of the fabric was turquoise and I would wear it with a pair of cream colored western boots that had pink and turquoise decorative stitching. That dress was one of a kind and it did make a fashion statement every time I had it on.

I am torn between two outfits... one is my wedding dress that I designed myself and had it made very very cheap as I was poor as church mouse at the time, it was sky blue, with bell sleeves and slightly square décolletage and it still made a swishy swooshy sound when I walked :) another (and I think my forever favourite) was real vintage stuff, my friend's mum was a proper hippie girl in 70ties when I was born and she kept some of her clothes, she let me choose two pieces and I went for pink wide leg high waist trousers with flower embroideries on the bottom side of the legs and purple-flowered shirt with pointy collar, with my middle-parted curly hair I looked like I'm on my way to Woodstock, I was 18 and it was 1991...

Knee length a line dress, short sleeves, with a tear drop hole in the front. We made these out of strong geometric knit prints in the early seventies. Worn with platform shoes. The younger ladies took the hems up for a much shorter bolder statement to wear with fishnet stockings.

I have minimal interest in fashion and fashion industry. But I love your videos, you have a lot of passion and it shows! They are a pleasure to watch! Happy travels, hope you have good holiday/business trip/etc! As for my 'iconic' dress - I think the first red dress! I love red but was never confident enough to wear it, I usually stuck to earth colours. I saw this dress in a shop and fell in love with it instantly - wonderfully vibrant, rich red maxi dress. I bought it but it waited in my wardrobe for about a year before I felt confident enough to wear it in public. Ever since then I have at least 2 red dresses at any time in my wardrobe ('original' red and something new xD)

As a child, I loved to draw wedding dresses on models. Eventually, I realized they were all the same in style. Vintage, high neck, beautiful floral lace, with leg of mutton sleeves, and a lace train. When I was getting married in 1990.,i went shopping for dishes etc, for my new home with my mum. We saw a Designer SALE, in a Wedding dress shop. ,I can't remember the designer. Just one rail was in the sale, and. my eyes saw it instantly... A Victorian style, high neck dress, with stunning flowered lace, and an amazing train, the like of which I'd never seen before. Not too long, but a beautiful, fixed satin bow at the base of the spine, lead into a work of art. And the most beautiful leg of mutton sleeves. Satin on top to the elbow, lovely but not ridiculously huge, and lace to the hands. It was my dream dress since I was 5 years old! ! I tried it on, and it fitted perfectly. I felt it was made for me. I could never have paid the £5,500 PRICE. A huge price then, and even now, for me. In the sale it was £500. My mum refused to allow me to buy it, she said I should try others on, first. Maybe. But as I travelled back to her home, I knew I'd left a peace of my heart, and my dream behind. I told my dad, he instantly put his coat on, and took me straight back by train to the shop. We bought it 15 minutes before the shop closed. The owner said it was, indeed, meant for me. The shop was in Liverpool. I lived and nursed in Wales. If I'd not got it that day, I don't know when, or if, I could have got it., as I was working for 10 days in a row. I felt, and looked (according to my husband and family) beautiful at our wedding, and have never regretted not trying other pieces. It was indeed my dress . Yesterday we celebrated, albeit under lockdown, our 30th Wedding Anniversary. Looking through our photographs, I still love that dress so very much. For the first time, I showed it to our sons, (who were blown away I still had it, as we have had many house and country moves for work., and they, too, loved it.) Its still breathtaking to me, with its stunning lace work. .Sadly some small parts are yellow. Do you know how I could fix this.?? It's been stored in black tissue in a box, as recommended to me at the time. And my husband and I are lucky enough to be even more in love now, than we were then, and are blessed with 2 sons. Time just has flown by too fast., how I'd love to be able to go back to our Wedding day and relive it all again.

The dress that I wore that was most iconic for me would have been in my senior year of high school. I was giving a speech at an event and would be at the podium with all eyes on me. Up until then I always wore rather safe dresses for my age. I decided to buy a wrap dress for the event. It was not an expensive dress as I was a teenager with no money. But the style was clean and sleek. The bustline as a wrap dress was the most revealing I had ever worn. The skirt portion of the dress was straight and fitted. I remember I also first used eyeliner that evening. I felt shall we say grown up and a woman for the first time in my life. Gone was the girl. The dress fit me like a charm and when everyone was looking at me I felt quite powerful and confident. 👍🏼

Jean Shrimpton's outfit worn at the 1965 Victoria Derby Race Day in Australia is iconic. Such a bold statement for the time. A sleeveless shift dress cut above the knee, no pantyhose, no gloves and no hat. Bold. Also Sonia McMahon's Whitehouse dinner dress, also 1965, with side splits cut up to here. That's how to make a statement.

I immediately thought of Jackie O's pink Chanel suit.

A red evening gown, i felt fabulous in it!!!

What an interesting video! Thank you! An iconic dress for me was the dress I wore to my son's wedding. A variation of the little black dress, it has gold thread in a sort of paisley pattern, perfect cut for me, and it has pockets which are hidden in the slight fullness of the skirt. I have worn it for a few other special occasions and I always feel very feminine and sophisticated in it.

I was 18 when the Mondrian dresses came out. They were so exciting! I never made a color blocked dress, but I made and wore many with that outline. I wore them all through college and into my days as a teacher. As for my favorite dresses that make me feel super feminine: any dress with a circle skirt. I just love that swish of fabric and the fact that one can sit without exposing oneself and look like a lady.

I think the most iconic thing I've worn yet is my yukata. during the second world war, my grandparents and great grandparents were put into internment camps by the canadian government and all of their homes and possessions were taken away. even before that, anything that seemed japanese was burned to avoid prosecution. because of that, I grew up very detached from my culture and not many members of my family had any traditional wear. so for me to wear something of my culture is a huge deal and gives me some sense of belonging as well as reclaiming what was stolen from my family.

Thanks for the amazing class on iconic dresses, Justine! It’s a pleasure to learn from your videos always! I’ve been lucky enough to wear some beautiful dresses on special moments of my life. Yet, if I had to choose my iconic outfit I would choose a very horrible pair of fuchsia thick socks that I wore during the labor of my first son!!! I had read in a book about pregnancy and labor that it was a good idea to wear warm socks in the labor room, so together with the also not very chic hospital robe, I wore those pink socks. Since that was the first of my 3 best life moments ever, I certainly keep in my memory those socks as my iconic outfit!

Justine - I would LOVE it if you would do a video soley dedicated to the work of Edith Head. Is this possible? You have such good insights and tid bits of insider knowledge, it would be so interesting I'm sure. She was an amazing person and so talented and it seems so she was so dismissed towards the end of her time in Hollywood to make way for others. c'est possible?

I have a viscose combination with the back background and small whitish pattern. It is so comfortable that since then, I feel a click in my head each time I see a cloth in similar colors. This coloring is among ones that suit me the most, I think

For myself, I designed and made a very simple purple stretch ballgown to wear in dance competition. No stones, very simple bateau neck in front and scoop in back, sleek lines, sleeveless. Everyone else was wearing complex neon gowns with huge skirts and floating chiffon doodads and thousands of stones. After the dance competition several women came up and asked where they could buy that dress. I sold it to a friend who wore it over and over again in performances. She was a beautiful dancer, had danced with the NYC ballet. She passed away recently after a long battle with cancer. I'm so glad that simple dress was put to such good use from such a nice person.

Thanks for the video. Audrey Hepburn's dress has always been the most iconic for me because of the amount that I see it everywhere in relation to elegance. You see it at Bachelorette Patties on napkins with her pearls, silhouettes of it on college dorm posters, and in beauty shops.
