The Key to Unhappiness | 5 Minute Video

Want to be miserable, resentful, and bitter? Few people do, and yet many people are. Why? Because many people have the one primary character trait that leads to unhappiness. And you need to avoid it. Nationally syndicated talk show host Dennis Prager explains.

How many times have you heard someone say they want to make a better world? It is a noble sentiment, but very hard to achieve, right?
Well, actually, it's quite easy. All we have to do is increase just one human trait. This trait is so powerful that it alone can make people happier without working on their happiness, and make them better - and by "better," I mean more generous, more honest, more kind, more everything good - without a single lesson in morality.
So, then, what is this one almost magical thing? Drumroll, please.
It's gratitude.
You can't be a happy person if you aren't grateful, and you can't be a good person if you aren't grateful. Almost everything good flows from gratitude, and almost everything bad flows from ingratitude.
Let's begin with ingratitude. Here's a rule of life: ingratitude guarantees unhappiness. It is as simple as that. There isn't an ungrateful happy person on Earth. And there isn't an ungrateful good person on Earth. There are two reasons.
Reason one is victimhood. Ingratitude always leads to or comes from victimhood. Ungrateful people - by definition - think of themselves as victims. And perceiving oneself as a victim or
perceiving oneself as a member of a victim group may be the single biggest reason people hurt other people--from hurtful comments to mass murder. People who think of themselves as victims tend to believe that because they've been hurt by others, they can hurt others.
And the second reason ungrateful people aren't good people is that ingratitude is always accompanied by anger. The ungrateful are angry, and angry people lash out at others. If ingratitude makes people unhappy and mean, then gratitude must make people happy and kind.
And so it does. Think of the times you have felt most grateful--were they not always accompanied by a feeling of happiness? Weren't they also accompanied by a desire to be kinder to other people? The answer, of course, is yes. Grateful people aren't angry and they also don't see themselves as victims.
The problem, however--and it's a big one, is that in America and much of the rest of the world, people are becoming less grateful. Why? Because people are constantly told that they are entitled to things they haven't earned--what are known as "benefits" or "entitlements." And the more things that people think they should get, the less grateful they will be for whatever they do get. And the more angry--and therefore unhappy--they will be when they don't get them.
Here are two rules of life. Rule number one: The less you feel entitled to, the more gratitude you will feel for whatever you get and the happier you will be. Rule number two: The more you feel entitled to, the less happy you will be. That's why, for example, children who get whatever they want are usually less happy children. We have a word for such children: spoiled. And no one thinks of a spoiled child as a happy child, and certainly not a kind one.

    Unfortunately people don't want to hear the truth because it makes them nervous...most people don't want to face reality... the topic of being grateful is a topic most people would like to sweep under the rug... confronting people by reminding them that they are lucky to be alive another day doesn't measure up towards their expectations of life... people today are focused on things that aren't a priority...materialistic things are the central focus of ungrateful people, yet don't realize what they have... but I guess those people are brainwashed into thinking that their life has no meaning and obtaining things are the key towards happiness... really sad

    I'm so grateful to be where I am today. Nothing is perfect in my life, and in fact I have a lot of problems. However, I know there are people in the world that don't have the same standard of living I do, and have different day to day worries. I don't worry about food on my table, my access to a roof over my head, or electricity. I have a family that loves me and friends that support me. I'm not rich in material possessions, but I'm rich in spirit and happiness. I will always seek to do better than I am now, but I will never forget where I came from or who built me up. No one does anything alone. Someone or something always helps push you to success. God Bless those who read my comment. I hope you have a wonderful day.

    You can sometimes use complaint as ,,push" for you to get better life, but if you're 100% sure you deserve more, then in most of examples you don't. No one is special in that way, and it's foolish to think you know a person who is. The rule is simple - if you want to have more, you have to work more for it.

    I see comments from people about gratitude being demotivating. As a Christian, I live life consistently reminded that I deserve nothing because of my sin, but that I have gotten everything through salvation. You do not have to believe that to be grateful for what you have, but in my case, it certainly helps. Do I, therefore, have no motivation? Obviously not. My gratitude does not mean that I am satisfied; specifically, I am unsatisfied with how I am using the gifts I have been given. I expect myself to be a better person, and to pay back the service that has been done to me by doing the same to others. I know there are a lot of selfish people in this world, but I believe that society can exist through people being responsible and generous in maintaining what they have. I have compassion for the people who are so caught up in worldly things that they can not understand what they have. What you have right now is enough to build a better you and a better future, and it always has been enough.

    @Admiral45-10

    You describe the other kind of gratitude. This one, which you described, is a non-harmful one. It is the source of most of our self-motivation, that makes us work harder for something. If you are thankful for what you've given to yourself and you think it's enough, you can think that way, but you would stop developing yourself. If you feel OK with what you have and you don't want to change it, you'll have no motivation for more. But if you think what do you have is not enough and you can work harder for more, it's fine as well. This will make you work harder, so you'll get more. You want to make some changes with yourself, so you can have a better life. But there's other kind of ingratitude: seeing a problem *outside* . I'm a Christian too, and I believe I shouldn't deserve anything from the world, because it's already made by a Perfect God Plan, and other people can think the other way, so excluding radical examples, I have to assume, that they can have a reason to not give me a better job, or pay me more. When I see problem outside I become selfish: I think I deserve more (and in reality it doesn't have to be true) and I'm frustrated I don't get it and call it ,,unfair". But I have also a second reason, why I shouldn't look for a problem somewhere else. Here's why: let's assume I find someone, who is responsible for what I feel. I can accuse him for that - but what will it change? He can argue and give me a good argument against me, and I'll be crashed. Very few of them will even care about what I feel. So what can I do to improve my life? Maybe, I should try doing something more - start a course, learn something, etc. and then try to get better job, so I can get paid better. If I cannot, it's OK - there are a lot of people, who can be better than me, so they get the job instead of me. I can argue about it, when I have better e.c. notes, but they chose someone else because e.c. he was black, or is part of chief's family - then it's unfair. But if he just has better qualifications - then it's fine and I can't do nothing more, than just accept it and keep improving my ones. I guess that's the fairest and simplest way of them all.

Voting for a conservative politician in America also means opposing equal rights for gay people, increasing our already-gigantic military budget, and making the rich even richer at the expense of the middle class. I always had no choice but to vote Democrat to oppose those bad ideas. Sadly, now the Democrats are pushing for open borders and spending tax money on giving free homes and free food to Islamic migrants instead of helping our own homeless citizens or our military veterans who can't get medical care. How do you become grateful for what you have? Think about what it would be like if whatever you are thinking about never existed. The man who has nothing is thankful for everything he is given. Are you grateful for your cup that holds your drink? What would life be if the cup was never invented? It's a silly example but that's the point! Even the most mundane tiny conveniences in our lives should make us glad that we have them. I'm glad someone came up with the idea to throw trash in a can. And to the person who improved on it by putting a bag in there. It makes keeping the place clean so much easier! Imagine life without something and you'll be glad you have it. If that's not the case... well, there's always the trash can solution!

    I am now disabled. I was a "high earner" and I paid into the system for 40 years. I am living at the poverty level. I applied for disability and now I am having regrets because it would make me a recipient of "entitlement"(IF) I were to be approved. It is very frustrating... BUT, I am blessed. Your attitude alone makes you perfectly worthy of your disability benefit. You don't consider it your 'right' to claim. It's not an 'expectation' for you. You paid into the system for 40. For many people, benefits are a life choice, an expectation. If it were not for people like yourself then benefits and welfare would never even exist. All good wishes to you.

    So, is it possible to be grateful and unhappy? Or rather, is it possible to be a good person and unhappy? I largely see myself as being unhappy, but I am grateful for a lot of things. I think a lot of my unhappiness comes from self-loathing, so maybe I'm ungrateful to myself? I think I answered my own question while writing this comment. Gotta love the KZread comment system. I suppose being ungrateful to yourself is an equally toxic thing as being ungrateful to others, it just doesn't result in as much hostility towards others, only hostility towards oneself. Gratitude and happiness are *INNER* processes that positively effect your *THINKING.* I certainly agree with what Prager has said in this video. However, many people with maladaptive personality traits are unable to be grateful and happy--and they resent and *DESPISE* people who are capable of cultivating those feelings in themselves. This is particularly true with people who show Cluster-B personality traits (narcissism) as it is explained in the DSM-5, a diagnostic tool used by mental-health practitioners for treating their clients.

    Thank you so much for posting this video nearly two years prior to today. I had just watched this on my other account just a few minutes ago when I had just been extremely enraged about something foolish. I had thought that blocking out my pain would make me happier before, but recently I heard that just letting the pain through your heart would somehow allow you to release it, aka "the only way out is through" notion. It certainly helped a little, but the suffrage I went through was still in my heart and I didn't know what to do except to keep feeling angry. Then I came across this video and got a better understanding of what Gratitude and entitlement are, and after analyzing this notion in comparison to my life I came to the conclusion that I was in fact being entitled to merely feeling pleased and happy all the time, which is why I hadn't felt pleased and happy at all. Now that I realize just how much entitlement is opposite to gratitude, I know now that if I want to lead a truly joyous life and not one focused on victimhood that I need to not just count my blessings but to examine myself further about what I feel entitled to and what about it I shall become grateful for. Thank you Dennis Prager and Prager U. I just wanted to let you know that you had taught someone an extremely invaluable lesson about living a better life.

Jacqueline, a viewer, asked Elizabeth this: (as paraphrased by Dr. Drew) 'how did you or how do you grieve the loss of your family life before this [kidnapping]?' Elizabeth: 'well, I think it's very mathematical the way I look at it. Up until I was kidnapped 14 and a half yrs of my life were probably the best childhood any kid could ask for. Had a loving family to protect me. They always made sure I was well fed, I was clothed, that I was card for, that I was loved. Then I had 9 really crappy months. Really terrible months. But, after those 9 months I went back to a loving, supportive, kind family. And so, u know, what is it now? I dunno what 30x12 is but it's a big number! And really only 9 outta the '30x12' months that I've been alive have been, well those 9 months were bad, but the rest of em have been overall pretty great! ' Dr. Drew:'So, overall you've been able to look at it, pretty much thru the vein of GRATITUDE'? Elizabeth: yes Dr. Drew: Very healthy

  • @Joshualbatross

    @Joshualbatross

    6 жыл бұрын

    Perhaps a heightened state of consciousness IS the material/physical manifestation of the metaphysical joining of the Holy Spirit. I don't think the two are necessarily mutually exclusive. I began the meditation by thinking about little things I was grateful for, and eventually expanded my gratitude outwards until I was grateful for the entire universe- and I really felt in a profoundly deep and universal way (which is a very difficult thing to describe using only words). At the height of this expansion of gratitude, I suddenly felt as though I was pierced with a pillar of light that went through my entire body and I was suddenly tingling and trembling and crying tears of joy. I don't know if others would traditionally define a Holy Spirit experience as being something like that but I couldn't think of any other way to describe it at the time. It's very strange because I wasn't raised in a religious household, but I've spent the last couple years studying Judeo-Christian spirituality and I've found that I was adhering to those values very strictly for my whole life without even realizing it. I've induced mystical experiences in the past by using psychedelics, namely psilocybin, but this was the first time I induced a mystical experience purely with gratitude and no external substances and it was one of the most profound experiences I've ever had.

It's a good thing to spread the word of God, but shoving it down people's throats and name calling the other side will only prevent the word of God from reaching them. @HerooftheNexus 1992 you're speaking your truth on the matter, that you chose to believe derived from, your faith, it's why it's called "believing" atheism is simply a lack of faith in a theistic god, we do not assume to know things we have not yet proven also there are intelectually below and above average theists and atheists, and there are agnostic people in between, i understand that believing in god suits your perception of this world, and it's ok to believe and be religious, but other people are not conviced that a god exists and it's ok for those people to have their opinion, but you sure as hell appear really insecure about yourself, since you feel the need to categorize all the hundreds of millions of people who have a different opinion than you as having an iq of 80 or below you can be sociocentric and care more about others with or without believing in a god, as there are as well tons of egocentric people who only think about themselves weather they believe or not in a higher existance attitude and actions define what type of person you are, not belief :) also, nobody knows what happens after we die, so there is no "fact" that people from around the world have experienced death and met christ, that's just something you chose to believe, also testimonial proof is not equivalent to truth

    Counting your blessings is not a solution. It's just a way to keep the plebeians content and toiling without a way to argue. One needs to find willpower and ability to overcome the situations and obstacles that WILL appear before them.

    I worked in an environment where nearly everyone felt entitled; they were all unhappy people and a chore to be around. It was very toxic. I left there and now I feel so much better.

    Just the simple fact that you were able to open your eyes, breathe, walk, have a roof over your head, etc. Is a great reason to be thankful. Many people didnt wake up this morning. This is so true.

    To anyone who thinks having more of something can make you happy, it can't. Look at wealthy folks as an example. Always seeking more. Money or things will not make you happy because there is always something more. Someone else to feel inferior to...

    One of Mr. Prager’s most important lessons. Teaching what isn’t taught. Practicing gratitude increases the effect of serotonin. It replaces self criticism, fear and negativity that produce cortisol. At the start, middle and end of your day be grateful. Even if you have to fake it till you make it.
