The ketogenic diet may help reduce depression and other symptoms in bipolar disorder. 🥑 Dr. Campbell, who has been on the ketogenic diet for seven years now, says he started the diet to improve his physical health. But he quickly noticed that being in ketosis helped ease his biopolar disorder symptoms. Ketosis is when the body switches from burning primarily glucose to burning ketones.
🔬 Dr. Campbell is the Baszuki Brain Research Fellow in Metabolic Psychiatry at Edinburgh University and now studies the effects of the ketogenic diet on bipolar disorder.
🧠 “I had no idea at the time it would have an effect on my mental health, but it was more effective than any treatment I’d ever tried in my life in ameliorating the symptoms of bipolar,” he explains. “It was such a dramatic turnaround for me after having tried many things that haven’t worked.”
🔬 In his recent research, he conducted a pilot trial to investigate whether 8 to 10 weeks of the ketogenic diet produced mental health changes in 27 participants with bipolar disorder. Participants reported remission of symptoms and substantial benefits. “We were seeing in the blood levels of people in our study that glucose and ketones correlate to their psychiatric symptoms,” he says.
🌅 Dr. Campbell notes that his symptoms have traditionally been worse in the morning. “It’s when you wake up and you’re faced with this state of depression,” he says, “and the state of depression is not really so much feeling sad-it’s like a state of physiological crisis that the body plunges into.” The keto diet, along with morning exercise, has offered relief. “Now if I maintain ketosis, I don’t have to experience that state of physical exhaustion that happens,” he adds.

    Keeping your blood sugars level by having the proper protein in your system does wonders for getting rid of the shakes & anxiety. High carb & sugars are the worst.

    I notice I have anxiety in the morning and I got a cgm from levels and see that even in my sleep my glucose went up to 110 while in sleep and then when I woke up 111
