The Karelian Bear Dog: Protecting people and bears from each other | INDIE ALASKA

Alaskans are used to seeing bears in their neighborhoods. Nils Pedersen and his Karelian Bear Dogs, Soledad, Rio, and Mardy work together to reduce human-bear conflict in Alaska. Nils is the Director of the Wind River Bear Institute, which was founded to provide innovative, non-lethal solutions to complex human-wildlife conflict issues. #workingdogs #alaskabears #bearaware

As a wildlife documentarian I owe my life and our camera crews life to these dogs after multiple grizzly encounters that with out our dogs we would have been up against some deadly encounters. Thank you to all the organizations that help train and handle these amazing dogs. 💙💙

My Beautiful Diablo (KBD) passed last November. I miss his wake up kisses and funny ways each & every day. The bond I had with this very loyal dog was so strong & like no other breed I have ever had. They truly are a Very Special breed.

The native name Karjalankarhukoira and its a literal translation karelian(Karjalan) bear(karhu) dog(koira). As a finnish person it sounds a bit funny, and thats exactly how I described my dog to english friends without knowing the correct name 😊

@@a_e_hilton 100%. : ) Need to be relaxed and attentive, working with nature rather than in conflict, which helps to keep his dogs on that same "wavelength". Excellent to see!

It's insane to me that a grizzly bear would run from a dog when it could easily tear the dog into pieces if it was so inclined

  • @leosalonen1564

These dogs would bark at a bear to keep it in place whilst the hunter would come and shoot the bear so I’m not sure if they’d be able to get within reach. Very true though.

A good bear dog would never go close to big animal to get killed. This is part of the skillset of a good breed.
