It was and it wasn’t. The dogs were tough, independent and partners. Sometimes they were companions and sometimes they were equipment. Dogs and humans have a complicated and a sometimes brutal relationship.

Equipment is a description of an object, not a living being. Is your child's babysitter considered equipment? Are your children considered equipment because they do chores? Nit enough is being done. However Greenland has their own population of these dogs. Genetically kept clean and protected. Canada and Greenland before they become genetically diverse should use a stock cross program to create as much genetic diversity as possible and up populations now before anything else happens. And create larger genetic diversity. Check out the Labrador husky. Not a lab husky cross the Labrador husky land race. Same thing as the eakimo dog but different breed and wolf hybrid heavily but like trainable wolf hybrids. Even worse off. Might be extinct in terms of purebred animals.... at best crosses and pure breds there's maybe 150 is we count really low Labrador husky content and some possible just look alikes that might be partially related.

Why on Earth would you slaughter such a beautiful and faithful dog ? I hope they make a comeback

I had a Samoyed which is similar and is named after the tribe in Siberia they come from, fortunately they were never seen as a threat to Government control or the gentle giants called Malamutes they are just as good and are Northern Sled dogs also. Stay safe, happy and healthy.

@@robertcampbell8070 spitz are not necessarily closer to wolves than other domestic dogs they are just way way less modified than other breeds which is why I am drawn to spitz dogs only. Japanese breeds and all the spitz sled dogs I find them gorgeous and noble like a wolf. I would love to keep all of them in my lifetime.

Imagine if govt today went around smashing your cars and killing your pets.

Sounds like the government owes them more than an apology, this makes me so angry

One of my neighbours had one of these dogs and their yard borders on a walking path. The dog lived outside with a huge dog house and it came over to play with everyone who walked by. It was scary because it was so huge and hyper, until you realized that it loved people. I think it made friends with everyone in the neighbourhood lol.

Thank you Anneka for presenting that breed whom I never heard of before. Lovely dog. His fur is so silky. So sad, this culling in the '60s. I hope the breed recovers gradually and is back to Canada, his land of origin.

Intentional killing, shooting the dogs instead of enforcing was easier then apologizing after the fact does nothing to erase the senseless brutality that occurred not only to the dogs but to the Inuit ppl themselves. Thank God for ppl like Rachel for reigniting the interest in these dogs by wrkn with them, educating the masses about these beautiful dogs. Leave it up to evil humans to slaughter them. Ignorance is a disease, evil is the result.

Senseless brutality? The only party on the receiving end of human's uncontrolled propensity for senseless brutality - is the nonhuman animal, especially Wild Animals and what retards call "livestock". Speaking of Canada, annual Seal slaughter, Polar Bear and Brown Bear slaughter, Walrus slaughter, Arctic Fox slaughter, slaughter of countless fur-bearing animals from Beavers to Polar Bears, of Belugas and Whales, etc., and the permission by the so-called "government" to sliteyed savages to slaughter every type of nonhuman Animal there is in the shithole that is canada, along with "livestock" slaughter that is today omnipresent as can be - is infinitely worse than shooting down some humans' willing slaves. I am very much opposed to killing and somewhat milder forms of abuse of dogs (and cats for that matter), but to cry about dogs (worse yet - the savages exploiting them!), rather than for proper Animals (especially, wild masters of their will, as opposed to willing slaves of the human vermin) - is quite pathetic.

Like everything else, excuses and lack of funding is what they usually say. It’s low on their priority list especially now with this pandemic goin on. Frustrating but I always try to see the good in humanity, perhaps we’re not a loss cause. Someone left a brilliant comment once, “they are called Animals by Species but WE are ANIMALS by DEEDS.”

Small changes lead to monumental changes and we all must face reality and in our own contributions, big or small, we can each make an impact that will greatly help the Animal Kingdom as well Mankind. We share this planet with them, we can all work towards a better system in place. Our future and survival depends on it. It’s crucial.

Love at first sight but tears in the eyes because of that sad beautiful history. I have an icelandic and a hungarian sheepdog - love the nordic and and ancient breeds.

Isn't it a horrendous thing to slaughter other animals, especially animals like Polar Bears or Walruses, mighty, noble creatures that could make a short work of your beloved servile pet without breaking into sweat? Name Me ONE nonhuman Animal slaughtering whom is not a horrendous thing. I might make an exception for flies, moths and mosquitoes, humans' nearest relatives. By the way, the savages that bred these dogs, regularly slaughter them, as well. For skin, for meat, for limited utility as sledding dogs - or simply out of boredom. You understand that shooting them is bad. But do you realise that slitting their throats or shoving a blade between the vertebrae is hardly any better? It's even somewhat worse, if anything. That's what one gets for serving the overgrown, overbred vermin that is the human species.

In 1980's I worked up in the Beaufort Sea and met one these beautiful dogs. I asked the owner a local hunter hired by my employer to be a lookout, about his dog thinking it was a Malamute. We talked for a while about how friendly these dogs are which turned out to be true😊 told me the sorry story about my Gov. atrocity. The dog was black grey and white but also Huge! And only 1 yr old. When we parted the dog was leaping and barking the owner dug in the heels of his snow boots said something the dog waved goodby and they took off like a shot over the ice. A great memory👍😎

My wife worked for the Arctic Trading Company in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada which is known as the Polar Bear capital of the world. Polar Bear viewing is a huge tourist business and is a large part of the local economy. The lady, Penny, who owns the Arctic Trading Company was the partner of a man who kept a pack of Canadian Eskimo Dogs in an effort to preserve the breed. There is a film that was made showing these beautiful dogs and the owner before his death. They were kept on the land in the traditional Inuit way and the film even features footage of a lone polar bear PLAYING with the dogs as if they are the best of friends. This happened with the dogs tethered in place on a short lead. One would think it would be a feast opportunity for a 1500 lb carnivore but the bear was only interested in friendship. Sadly the gentleman passed away four or five years ago. At last hearing, his partner was struggling to maintain and care for the pack with the help of local people.

Not seen CED's since I met Panda at Shepherdsway. Wonderful dogs. Well done for promoting the breed.

There are estimated of 18,000 Greenland dogs resident in Greenland. This information is directly from the head of the Danish Kennel Club 2020. Denmark owns Greenland. Within Europe there are several hundred also so not a rare breed at all.

Shame on the people who killed these magnificent dogs! Shame on Canada. Thanks for educating the world about this beautiful breed.

I agree it’s shameful that people did this but it’s ridiculous to say “Shame on Canada” for what happened 40-50 years ago. Those people are one or very near it and the people of today’s Canada would never allow this to happen now. I guess you can say that Canada recognized this huge mistake and learned from it. Is that shameful? Never repeating a horrible mistake....that’s something we should all be ashamed of? Sorry, that’s how you become better. Most countries could still learn that kind of lesson right now for the atrocities they still commit.

They run differently than most other sled dogs. Odd gait in the back legs.

I’ve known Rachael for years now and I can say that she is truly educated and soo knowledgeable when it comes to this gorgeous breed. I am also very excited to announce I will be dipping my toes into owning this breed so come March I will be flying out to get my little bundle of fur. I truly am grateful to be able and part of the beautiful preservation and education of the Canadian Eskimo/Inuit Dog community and lines! My mom has known these beauties for years, she has taught me much when it comes to the dog world but I am also well versed with SOOO much more educated and can’t wait to learn more about this breed!!

You are not giving credit where due. The person who almost single-handedly saved the breed is a Mr Carpenter, of Yellowknife, Canada. If you visit his kennels, you will find the true breed. The breed is perfectly adapted for harsh winters, strong, and can survive periods of fasting longer than any other breed. They are about mid-intelligence for trick shows, but excel in pulling sleds, where their strength and endurance are legendary. They are very fine pets, if you can run them regularly on trails and show them affection. They cannot be kept in a kennel.

These fluffy teddy bear pups are like the amazonian dogs of the north: rare, big, muscular, strong, courageous, yet sweet and cute and soft like overgrown puppies. Safe to say I want one but my place is too small for them. One day.

Honestly, the Samoyed is very similar rugged arctic dog that assisted expeditions to the South Pole and Antarctica. I don't live in a very large house or yard, but I do take them out everyday for a hike. They are hardy working breed that needs exercise. You might consider one. But I agree about the Canadian dogs, but probably too much dog for me at this time.

An excellent interview. As a 20year CKC breeder of Bernese , let me say, thank you for your incredible work with my national breed. the Canadian Inuit dog. Which is what i wish the registered names was.. get rid of that word Eskimo, belongs with the "N" word. and put in Canada. Thank you for the history lesson. so insightful, really. Once seen such a combi of cart and dogs...wow they are fast ! And loud ! : )

My family's new rescue dog was brought to Ontario by a northern dog rescue from Kinngait Nunavut and she had a litter of puppies. One of her puppies recently had a DNA test to determine what breeds it's made up of and after getting the results we determined that our pup (the mama) is 14% unknown breed but the rest is German Shepherd and Canadian Inuit Dog. She is a gorgeous 42 pound almost entirely black pup and she resembles a small black wolf with Amber eyes but with a curly tail (when happy) She is an incredibly sweet, affectionate and very goofy girl

Honestly so adorable, I got a malamute and a half husky/malamute and absolutely love all these fluffy dogs

I like how she explained how the name Inuit is proper, and the other name derogatory. She absolutely loves the history before colonization, 1000-year evolution of the breed, and was honest about the Canadian government's atrocities with the breed and their relation to the history of how Canada came to be- she wants to protect the breed- well done!

Enjoyed watching ur video on the Canadian Inuit dog. Also found it very informative about the shameful n disgraceful acts of the Canadian government n the RMP killings of the breed in the 50s n 60s ! Before thought so highly of the RMP. Last few years hearing about that government's acts against the indigenous people of Canada and now their dogs too. Disgraceful

They are extremely beautiful dogs but they definitely are not a dog for everyone. These dogs require a certain type of owner and a certain type of lifestyle. It's amazing to hear the story behind the Canadian government and what they did to these dogs and the Inuit people. The Inuit people were obviously treated much like the American Indians but it seems odd that it occurred in the 1960's and 70's. It seems like the Canadians would have learned from what the American government did many years earlier. To hear that this breed is down to under one thousand dogs worldwide is scary. Due to the breed requirements and the fact that they aren't as strong as an Alaskan Malamute or as fast as a Siberian Husky, it makes it difficult to find a purpose for them in the real world. Most people don't use a dog for sledding and hunting bears, etc., that along with the fact that usually aren't the best mannered house dogs, makes it difficult to find a quality home for these dogs. Hopefully they survive and thrive. 🙏🏼

With you 90% but if you get true Baffin Islands or the really northern isolated dogs or some Brian ladoons dogs which genetically are the purest lines you can get in what I have seen CED are stronger and bit hardy more rugged the malamutes but in general I think it would be wise to say that draft sleigh breeds fell in decline long ago and even the Siberian huskies are in the decline. For the most part the dogs winning races are Alaskan huskies

I am only familiar with the Siberian Husky, not the Alaskan Husky. The Husky dog in Alaska that I am familiar with is called the Siberian Husky but I don't follow the sledding type dog breeds too much. Best wishes.

@@notsosilentmajority1 sadly Siberian’s are not the fastest sled dog on the block no more it’s the Alaskan huskies they are cross breeds of Siberian, and malamutes with running breeds like greyhounds, pointers, Dalmatians and setters. They breed the fastest dogs who love to run over generations which made the Alaskan husky. People still enter with the more historical sled breeds like samys, mals, Siberian’s and CED even Akita’s but they are way to slow for competition. Mostly hobbiests still use this breed and some Inuits still use there dogs for traditional use. And I know there some Russians and Siberians that’s still use there Yakutia sled dogs traditionally. Thank you so much for this video. I've had the distinct pleasure of touring the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness with these magnificent dogs pulling the sled on a week long expedition. I've bee a fan of the CED since then.

I have met at least 3 of these dogs ( maybe it’s because I used to live in Alaska but idk) and they are very friendly to kids but sometimes can be aggressive but it’s very rare and they are amazing dogs and WE NEED TO KEEP THEM ALIVE ❤

I think these low estimates of the numbers are coming from southern Canadian (and possibly American and UK?) breeders who want scarcity as a marketing ploy. There are plenty of dogs in most Inuit communities, and both Malemutes and Greenland dogs are basically the same (Inuit) breed (with some meddling of course from southern breeders).

Today I found out that my dog Zeus is s Canadian Eskimo !! I had no idea so I visited this vid to learn about them x I rlly thought he was a malamute

In the Yukon in 1969 I saw a mix of such "vicious" big sledgedogs, said to be part wolfs, in line in front of sledges, ready to run or resting after run, I cann't remember. What I remember, and will never forget, is how scared I got as I saw small kids spontanious runnig up to these "wild beasts", me expecting the worse kind of reaction from the dogs, that probably were used to though treatment. The dogs did fight between themselves BUT unbelivable, to my amacement. the kids flung their arms around the neck of the dogs like it could have been their own pet without any disprovable reaction

I am very sad that most of them were killed. I hope there will be now more dogs like these, love them :) They are like my dog Alaskan Malamut, very similar :) fingers crossed for them :)

They're absolutely Magnificent!! Wow thank you for making all of us aware of this Atrocity. I feel horrible for the Inuit and these very speciall dogs. Great video!!💚

Being that I am a Canadian woodsman, I have been around trappers and the like, a lot. A lot of those guys just had 1 or 2 dogs that pulled a toboggan behind the snowshoeing trapper. One guy I met, somewhere off the Alaska highway, was riding a snowmobile for which he professed nothing but hatred. When I asked him why, he said that his dogs, when he had them, never missed a trap. They could smell them and knew where to stop. He also said they were good company. If 1 got hurt, he'd put that one on the sled and let the others pull. Worse came to worse, he could eat a sled dog. And he'd never seen a skidoo that could give him 13 baby skidoos in the spring. So, as we wasted my company's time around a campfire at -45 deg C., I asked him why use a skidoo? He replied that fur prices had gone down so far that he had to have such a long trapline, that dogs just weren't fast enough. The mindset is also that those traps have to be checked every so many days and the skidoo was just so much faster. But boy! Did that guy ever hate skidoos! Oh, and in general, siberians are too small and malemutes are too big. The Inuit dog is just right. And tougher. I remember how those Inuit felt when the dogs were killed, they grieved forever. We Canadians have done a lot of good things, but in reference to our native people, we haven't much to be proud of. As for me, I identify with them. I'm a white guy but regard the height of human technological development as having peaked at the snowshoe. And the sled dog. And the crooked knife. To be able to thrive at -50 deg. C, well, that's one tough man, and smart.

I remember working up North in the NWT in the eighties. Three thousand dogs and one thousand people. That summer all of the dogs were on the island and fed lake trout. Who knows what breed they really were. They were working dogs and outside of the community and away from people for the summer.

The indigenous Canadians did the same with Salish wool dog that’s now extinct. They would keep packs of them on islands to let them grow their wool pelts. Surviving off hunting mice/rats/beaver/muskrat ect. Because of their small size (related to Shih tzu’s) they had to be kept off mainland from predators
