I own 2, they are the sweetest dogs I have ever owned. They need a large amount of land to roam. Mine have a pattern they roam everyday. The adults take the younger dogs with them and teach the younger dogs. They leave and may be gone for hours or days.

When I tell , people don't understand : normaly when security dogs see you passing by their area they go crazy at barking . I experienced it with Kangals in a few times , but they stared at me gently , they were like that they immediately understood I had no bad intentions. I mean they were totaly different from other dogs , I just loved them.😊

Proud owner of a 16-month-old Kangal, we got from old lines and reputable breeders (Kangal Club of America). Both parents are working dogs and this boy takes to everything naturally. Will comment that he's incredibly protective of children This is a dual edged sword, so we have to watch him closely around strangers and small children. He loves people to a fault and gets along well with every dog he meets, unless the dog is larger and shows any form of aggression. If the dog shows aggression and lunges towards him or one of us, he warns and if they don't back off, he will engage, and his violence of action is scary, and I've raised several varieties of canine, meaning I've seen a lot of dog fights and hunting engagements (wild hogs), Irish Wolfhounds taking deer and fighting for pack hierarchy. He enjoys watching over livestock and will keep order on the property, meaning he alerts, confronts and encourages uninvited visitors (animals) to vacate he area. When people show up, he will bark to inform us and warn the visitor, but we know he's no threat to them as do any of the folks who come to visit. They are a dominant breed and they run a very tight ship. I highly recommend the breed to loving homes which have large areas to roam and jobs for them to do. They are very intelligent and sensitive to people, so physical punishment should not be used, isolation is generally enough to get the message across. They dig like miners, will eat through toys and organic things in no time and can run/jump like the wind. High fences and regular contact are a must, unless they're simply a field dog, as they really do love human contact.

Yes kangals should be lightweight dogs with size, springy movements, even the Assyrians, bred for this with the pshdar, floating phases is very important for shepherd dogs, these other dogs with no floating phase won’t be able to defend livestock, they’re too slow, too slow to even keep up with the livestock once they’re under attack, leaving the livestock defenceless

I saw a video of kangals fighting (not a dog fight) and they are the only dog I have seen where they have tactics in fighting learned from the mother. They lead with their shoulder and hit the other animal with it to get them off balance and then try to get on top of them. There are a few breeds of dogs that I call super dogs (pitbull, German shepherd, malinois, New foundland, dogo argentino) because of their unique abilities and the kangal is at the top of the list.

The best I have ever seen is when an Irish Wolfhound deals with a problem Dog. I could understand when my uncle call them king of Dogs and I couldn't believe a giant Dog could move that fast. Nothing like when they are at play.

I think the absence of the midsection on the Kangal serves multiple purposes. It spring-loads their back legs, and as defense, the wolves can’t get to it easily.
