The Judy Garland Show was opposite the western Bonanza on NBC at 9:00 PM ET Sunday. The latter time slot proved to be a graveyard for a number of CBS programs. Additionally, there was a lot of behind-the-scenes drama on the Garland show including changes in format, directors, producers, and regular cast members because executives at CBS, especially James Aubrey, were unhappy with the lower than expected ratings. Despite all this, how wonderful her show looks 60 years later!

I don’t want to sound like an old head, but popular culture used to be Judy Garland and Donald O’Connor (and Sinatra and Ellington, etc) and now it’s….

Well once upon a time, popular entertainment (showbizz) and the performing and stage arts, even and especially those which perhaps this whole special perfectly exemplifies in its range, scale, and potential to charm us all, had at least somethings in common with the higher-brow performing and creative arts-opera, orchestral and chamber music, the ballet, lyrical and Jazz (think, Fosse) choreographed dancing, cabaret, the theatre and the classics-in that these were all things which required innate skill, personal flare or charisma, disciplined study and practice, and tireless tutelage and training. “We” couldn’t have gotten up and done their acts ourselves very easily-not even with extensive training and the promise of a big payday and raucous applause, in most cases.

Do you know why they repeated the Lone Ranger bit? It was on the first or second episode as well, wasn't it?

Although this was the seventh episode taped, it was the first one shown. The Lone Ranger skit was Van Dyke's strongest material so the production team thought it'd give him the best chance to make an impact. It didn't work as three shows later, they sacked him!!

Jerry Van Dyke ruined this show IMO! He shouldn't have been on the same stage! Donald was fine and more on her level!

I'd seen JVD guesting on Merv Griffin's show, and he was witty and amusing. Judy's team didn't know Jerry any better than they knew Judy.

Fly Me To The Moon is quite harrowing. To me, Judy seems at her lowest here. She radiates unhappiness. I think things were going badly wrong behind the scenes. She even flubs the beginning of Chicago, a song she knew very well, which I think betrays her state of mind at this point in the series.

The series was undergoing a major behind the scenes overhaul at this point, so things were not good for Judy at this point.

@@cliff9685 You're right. And as bad as it was, this episode beat Bonanza. Afterward, Bonanza regained its winning streak permanently. What this shows is that, if you believe the Nielsen ratings, viewers were willing to watch an alternative to Bonanza, gave Judy's series a chance, but didn't like it enough to come back. Mixed reviews didn't help.

@@akrenwinkle CBS really screwed it up! The original Mickey Rooney episode minus Van Dyke was great. Her Old Man River was a staggering way to kick off the series. But then they shuffled it to later on.
