Jess, being sappy here, I hope you don't mind. I applaud you a gazillion times for your honesty and openness and for discussing your physical health transformation journey with us. You are so on the right track and NOW IS THE TIME. You are young, you are beautiful and you have given so much to this community. I'm going to be following along, learning along with you and be the loudest cheerleader you've got. Sending the biggest hugs. P.S. Roasting vegetables is THE BEST!

Honestly, you can roast any vegetable & it tastes a million times better, even with just a little olive oil & sea salt. It’s like the healthy “ranch dressing” - it makes everything taste better!

Two quotes at the start of my running journal: “There are no magic pills, secrets or shortcuts to getting fit, lean, & strong. You have to know what to do. Then you have to do those things consistently through all of life’s ups and downs. The end.” and “You can never expect to succeed if you only put in work on the days you feel like it.” 👊😎

I wish you the best of luck on your health journey :) just keep in mind that you are beautiful, you are human, and you are not fat. “Fat” doesn’t define you as a human being. Just another fatty chipping in! Fat is *not* a bad word! We *are* fat, it just doesn't make us less of awesome people. It never was a bad word, until social media made it bad. So let's simply reclaim it, just like "skinny" doesn't need to be bad but can be. It's a descriptor

I completely agree. I usually try to at the very least do one tomato every year but this year I decided I didn't have the dedication for maintaining a plant. Well last year's tomato plant had other ideas for me. Let my dogs out and noticed something that didn't look like a weed in that pot. Turns out one of the tomatoes must've rotted while I was on vacation and one of the seeds had sprouted.

My husband is on the Mediterranean Diet, and he doesn’t like tomatoes. He does like tomato based sauces (spaghetti, lasagna, etc), and salsa. We do a lot of big salads - a base of green mixes with toppings of Feta cheese, nuts and seeds, appropriate meat or fish, vinegar/oil based dressings, and put tomatoes on the side. We also have slowly introduced dishes with different tomato varieties or preparations (like grape tomatoes or heirloom tomatoes or sun dried tomatoes) and cut the amount in the recipe, or left them on the side. While they are good to include in the diet, we’ve focused more on having larger helpings of vegetables and more variety over all in order to reduce the amount of carbs and starches we eat with meals, while swapping out meats for more seafood, less red meat, etc. We also focused on one meal at a time to reduce overwhelm- we came up with half a dozen reasonable breakfast options that he would eat and got him working toward getting a good breakfast routine down, while I have been working toward creating a regular dinner menu and stocking appropriate groceries for dinners.

This year I am also committed to getting to the bottom of my being overweight and in chronic pain (sleep apnea & PCOS). Some things that have helped are getting a dog, eating strictly pre-made meals, and stopping screen-binging. I also have been drinking two cups of water when I wake up and when I go to bed. I think hydration is key to losing weight because you feel more full.

I have it too and have been fasciated to learn about the link between it and insulin resistance. I’d say it’s worth looking into if you’ve not already. Also, so proud of you for making a public commitment to better your physical health! I didn’t realize it until now, but I was waiting for this video for myself, because all the other BuJo health journal videos are so uninspiring to me. I don’t need to see 800 different ways to track my health goals, I know how to do that. I need a place to come back to when it gets hard. So extra thanks for inspiring me to finally start the journal I need.

I was going to suggest looking into other hormonal stuff, too. I had a PCOS diagnosis since I was 21, but insulin resistance and thyroid issues only got checked out when I wanted to get pregnant. Both issues kind of stir me towards sweets and just laying down. What helped me was medication, making my partner walk with me every day and I looked into why I eat and drink what I do and to find healthier substitutions. That scratched the itch without the guilt. (like making cocoa with dutch cocoa, instant coffee and cinnamon instead of the sugar - packed instant cocoa I used to make) Thank you for the inspiration to get into it again!

"My favorite sport is sitting down." So much this. Like I have a ton of hobbies. I use my brain and creativity for my hobbies so much and it annoys me that using one's brain doesn't burn as many calories as like walking around the block. I'm busy. I'm doing things. I'm trying to write a novel. I'm not lazy just because my hobbies tend to be sedentary. Anyway, I feel you here. My husband and I are working on jumpstarting our health journey as well. (And of course, physical activity is good for your brain and can help spark creativity, and I know that, but it's really hard to get away from the novel when I'm in the zone to go spend 30 minutes lifting weights and then needing to cool down and then take a shower, etc. and now I'm an hour or more behind on my writing goal for the day).

It was hard for me to transition to a whole foods style of eating. To make the transition easier, I looked at the foods that I was eating. Peanut butter is now organic and without added sugar. Jam is now made with fruit juice instead of white sugar. Beef is now grass fed AND grass finished. No more pork as it's usually always fed grain in the USA. I can't afford speciality raised pork and in a lot of recipes you can substitute chicken breast for pork tenderloin. You see transitioning from a lot of packaged food to cooking everything from scratch is a MAJOR lifestyle change, so take it slow by cleaning up the packaged foods you eat is easy as there are lots of alternatives on the shelves these days. For instance, I make my own sourdough bread, but I use a bread machine. Dump in the ingredients, press a button, refrigerate for 24 hours (to ferment the wheat), put back in the machine, wait 30 minutes to come up to temperature and set the machine to bake 1 hour and you've got a loaf of bread with no preservatives. With only 5 minutes of my time here and there. Will I every make bread by hand? Probably not. There's other things I'd rather be doing. 💖🌞🌵😷

Being a night owl, I had a terrible time going to bed at a certain time... Until I started taking 0.25mg melatonin at 7pm. I also set an alarm for 8pm and try to get into bed soon after... the alarm snoozes for 15 minutes until I complete the action... as I rarely comply immediately. The melatonin makes me just sleepy enough to think getting in bed is a good idea. Do I fall asleep right away? Sometimes... but usually I read. Sitting up in bed keeps me from sleep, so reading allows me to lay. I accept this as a transition period, so just thinking about a set bed time and making an effort every night has been a huge win. My circadian rhythm has been off for so long, I'm expecting it to take a while. 💖🌞🌵😷

Best of luck with your health journey. I also have a condition that makes losing weight difficult. I was told by doctors that it would be difficult or impossible to lose weight. I really like your gentle, positive approach. I was very lucky to find Whole 30. It’s not a diet, it’s a way to reset your relationship with food. It breaks sugar addiction, teaches healthy eating habits, and helps you discover which foods make you feel better or worse. I’ve lost over 50 lbs and I keep coming back to it when I need to reset my eating habits. My favorite thing about it is that there’s zero tracking. No counting calories, no weighing, no food diary. The rules are simple and once you get used to reading labels it’s easy to avoid foods that aren’t compatible during the reset. After the reset, you take what you learned and make a food lifestyle that works best for your body, so nothing is permanently restricted unless you choose to do so.

This was a great video, Jess, and I love the variety of info you are including in your reference notebook. I struggle to come up with food I enjoy that isn't actively harming me, and having a list like this would be awesome. So I'm selfishly hoping that you can inspire some ideas along the way ;)

I wish you all the best with your transformation Jess! I hope Vogel can chop those tomatoes even if he doesn't like eating them ;D I've lived with picky eaters (not saying Vogel is one but you get my point ;) ) and I find it's easiest to just separate that thing the person doesn't like from the salad/course and just add it to your plate :). It is always easier to stick to things like this if both people in the household are on board and eating the same things. Mediterranean food is SOO good and versatile and a lot of recipes are easy to throw together from memory when you have made them a couple times :) Mostly because it has a lot of whole foods I guess :) GO JESS GO!

Im the same way about things. I need the information before i can start doing the thing. If i dont feel like i have enough comprehensive information, i won't start the thing. And actually, the reflections part of the course has helped me with it a bit, because i feel i can start the project, reflect after a week or two and then see if i have all the info i need. If ive been getting on fine, then im obviously covered and i havent wasted days drumming up info that i had absolutely no need for! I ended up combining my physical and health, and mental health journals into one "self-care" style, when i noticed that one is definitely linked and influenced by the other. So just beware that you might find this too, and plan for mental info spreads on the off chance. I wish you all the luck and good vibes! As someone that has been on a Mediterranean "diet" for the last 20 years, i can honesty say that the food is delicious, nutritious, and filling in a way that doesnt make you feel bloated and sick. I have so many allergies that I'm limited to chicken, fish, and veg, but I've never felt healthier (apart from the fact that I'm disabled and have no feeling down my right side😂). You get what i mean though.

Fabulous timing for this video! I'm thinking of starting a health journal partially because with an assortment of concerns and various doctors, it's difficult to keep track of things like when a new med for my heart can actually also lower my already low blood count. Coordinating everything in order to talk to the different doctors will be invaluable. Now, if I could just write so pretty. 😁💜

I have 4 autoimmune diseases, I definitely need to track certain things associated with symptoms/medication, and I’ve been struggling with whether to include this in my main bujo or make a dedicated notebook. This video answers that question for me! Related to weight loss, I lost about 75 lbs in the past 8 months…I’d been struggling for several years after being diagnosed with hypothyroidism, which ultimately progressed into Hashimoto’s (my 4th autoimmune). I know this is unsolicited advice so my apologies if it’s too forward, hut I encourage (women in particular) to specifically request a doctor check your hormone levels. Find a doctor you trust to do their due diligence. Also have them check for adrenal fatigue syndrome (you can find videos on KZread with more info & the tests that need to be done - they’re usually not included in standard bloodwork). For me, I KNEW I was burning more calories than I took in, and I never lost more than 2 lbs for months. It was incredibly frustrating. If you have a medical condition preventing you from losing weight you want to know before you start your journey & make sure it’s properly controlled.

You're so right! It's important to be honest with ourselves and it's great you know your why. It's going to come in handy when you struggle. I began my wellness journey at the beginning of 2023. The one thing that made a difference every time I felt unmotivated was remembering why I started - for me it was chronic pain from a childhood injury. The other two were a program I could follow ANYWHERE and that was all ready for me to use and a community I could lean into. I found both with BODi (formerly Beach Body) and I totally recommend it. I struggled so much before because I just couldn't make it to the gym and I had no idea what I was doing. I love it so much, I became a partner. They have different nutrition programs depending on your personality type, a more flexible one based on making choices from what you've learned and another specifically using the recipes and portions if you need the rigid structure. They have all the supplements you'll need before and after exercising. They even have mindset videos, meditations, and personal development. But, even if they didn't have any of that, they have great workout programs and really great trainers. You can do it from home and even without any workout gear. I literally have worked out in hotel rooms with liquor bottles, outside, and in a closet. I have hormonal issues and have struggled with my weight as well, and this is the one subscription that actually helped me reach my goals, even during hard times. I wish you the best in your journey and if you or anyone else would like more info on BODi, you can ask me.

I thought about having a notebook for recipes but since is binded the organization thing is limited, so I switched to write down on loose leaves so I can put them in a ring binder or something like that. Related to sleep might be worth some blood work, like check the B12 vitamin level (turns out I was way too low that I felt I didn't rest enough) and try yoga, it counts as strength training because you lift your own body weight plus it has other benefits.

Oh and just some actionable tips I've been trying out to get better sleep: block certain apps/websites on your devices at a certain point in time (I use the app screenzen on my mobile devices but I still have to implement this on my computer), don't let your devices enter the bedroom, have the room super dark or use an eye-mask, if not using an eye-mask try out a wake-up light type of alarm clock, consider sleeping alone (especially if the people/pets in your bedroom snore and/or move around a lot during the night). I'm also considering using earplugs when sleeping but so far I'm too anxious about not hearing anything in case of emergency. Keeping the devices out of the bedroom was quite hard for me, since I had the habit of falling asleep to a podcast. But it also had the biggest effect and after some adjustment time I learned to fall asleep quickly without background noise and in the mornings I often forget about my phone and look at it quite a bit after waking up. Now, like you, I just have to find a way to get to bed earlier.

i'd recommend writing citations or making an online note you can reach with the citing of research you're referring to in your journal just cause it can get annoying if you need additional info from an article or something and you have to go out of your way to find it again. also totally unsolicited but if you're thinking of possibly for starting out at something like a gym and don't have any prior experience the machines can be really really intimidating. i highly recommend investing like 10 to 15 sessions with a trainer starting with 1 to 2 times a week and learning how to use equipment and how to actually use the machines and what they all do and how to use all of them and seeing which weight is doable and what you need to do to push yourself. i did this recently and i went from having 0 clue what I'm doing in the gym and just going in there to use a treadmill and going home cause i have 0 clue on what to do to basically having a solid idea of working out and what muscles are supposed to be getting stressed and which ones should not be getting hit with every workout. plus scheduling a routine and getting into the groove of things. i can now confidently walk into the gym on my own and work out without assistance (yet, i dont do anything that needs spotting for now.) and i would never have been able to achieve that in the 1.5 months i've been going into the gym with the trainer.

6 weeks ago today I started a similar journey. It’s a bit more difficult in terms of exercise more me (as you know I have a busted back and can’t walk without the stupid cane) but it’s working. I’m down a little over 7lbs which doesn’t sound amazing but given the medical conditions and the physical impairment I think it’s going quite well. Vogel could always pick tomatoes out of things :) Is he going to garden this year? You could grow veg you like and help him in the garden - even small amount of gardening tasks are good exercise (pretty sure I never spell that word correctly but everyone knows what it’s supposed to be lol) Be careful with the bmi chart, that thing tells body builders that they are overweight :) If you want to chat or rant along the way you know where to find me :) You can still have Coke Zero, you just need to have less and drink more water. It’s not as horrible as I thought it would be :)

So maybe this information will help someone :) For the insulin resistance which most ppl with pcos have I take Medformin (a prediabetic medication that can also help with weight loss) and Myo-inositol with D-chiro-inositol ratio 40:1 (there’s studies showing that this ratio is most effective for pcos) Additionally I take hormonal birth control made up of Estrogen & Cyproterone acetate (an anti-androgen to lower my elevated testosterone levels)

I have lost 4 kg since week 16 (7 wweeks), 6,5 kg since 1 mars (3 month) and around 9 kg since in the end of last year sometime. I know my highest weight in the enda of last year, but not exactly when. I eat what ever I want, but counting calories, not every day tho. I do have 1-3 days a week where I don't counting and don't care as much as the day when I counting. I think that is importent for the body so it does'n't go in to starving mood. I don't count when I'm cisiting my parents, friends, having food out with others etc. I'm more like you with exercise. My favorite is sitting down. Sometimes I don't even reach 500 step during a hole day. And my actually favorite sports, swiming and capoeira is to expensive for me right now when I'm a student with out possibility to have CSN, Swedisch study loan. so all my money is going to bills and food and sometimes gym. I also have trouble to eating vegitbles, but challenge my self and try to eating something to every meal, even breakfast. :) This works for me. :)

I tried to read through the comments to make sure I'm not beating a dead horse, so sorry if all this has already come up! For one, physical, mental, and emotional health are huge and amazing goals for anyone to have! I've seen you over the years have a "food" goal in your journals and when you provide updates it's usually not hitting those goals. And something I knew logically but took a VERY long time for me to understand in my heart is a few related things: (1) You are your lifestyle. Do you enjoy your lifestyle or are you willing to sacrifice things like having social nights out? I personally like my Sunday brunches with my girlfriends and my body reflects that and would not be willing to give that up, so why would I be mad that on Sundays I end up way over my maintenance calories or gain a few lbs from it? You'll need to rectify those. Is that the kind of lifestyle you could see yourself sticking to the rest of your life? (2) What is your relationship with food? Is it a comfort when you are down? Is it filled with shame? Long lasting progress may only happen when you dissect that and heal what needs healing. (3) Set yourself up for success. Which days are you exhausted and go for fast food? You addressed this with "make it easy" but you may need to dive in what those triggers are. I ended up gaining 20lb over the course of 2 years because I was in a toxic work environment that filled me with so much stress that I never had energy to make myself healthy food. Even if I wanted to lose weight in those years, I don't see how it would have been possible without changing several other things in my life. My biggest tip is take it VERY slow. It might not be super motivating because you won't see the weight shed off overnight, but the smallest changes you're able to make (simple replacements instead of a total overhaul) will give you the greatest likelihood of long term success. Don't look at "falling off the wagon" as a failure! Just start new the next day (or the next hour). It's never going to be a consistent improvement, expect the one step forward, two steps back at times so you're not disappointed and wanting to give up! Weightlifting is your best friend, ESPECIALLY as a woman/AFAB -- it will deter osteoporisis, help core strenght which is one of the key indicators of longevity, and it wouldn't surprise me if it helps with other random things. The biggest benefit for your particular goal though is helping burn fat faster and giving a leaner physique appearance. Keep in mind, as you get older, you'll also have less fucks. I'm a couple years older than you and already I have cared less about my appearance. I'm the heaviest I've ever been and I'm not mad it (mostly related to my point 1 above). Give yourself some grace on this journey and don't be afraid of changing your goals if you realize this actually isn't one you want to prioritize!
