The JIHAD in Palestine | The Lofty Mountain (Abdullah Azzam)

In the debut episode of The Adab Book Club, we delve into the mind and literary works of Sheikh Dr. Abdullah al-Azzam through his famous "The Lofty Mountain", a book written shortly before his assassination.
In this book we cover a myriad of complicated issues related to the Palestinian liberation struggle as well as the Afghan-Soviet war during the 1970-80s, uncovering America and the Arab Gulf;s complicity and endorsement of the Jihad in Afghanistan against the Soviets at a time when Jihad was utilised as a counter balance to Soviet incursion into the Arabian Gulf.
This literary review provides fascinating insights from recent history by drawing timely and pertinent parallel examples from the ongoing struggle in Palestine.

I feel like to mention that there is no way for us to ascertain that the current fighters in Gaza still play cards and listen to music. I have only seen videos of them praying quran and giving speeches which dont contradict Islam. This book was written in the past and maybe the Muslims then werent of the same calibre as they are today.

I don't think that it was simply a matter of them playing cards (not clear if playing cards is insinuating gambling) and listening to music, but rather the lack of an Islamic ethos that characterized the anti-occupation forces. Especially during that time when nationalist and marxist sentiments were more prevalent.

Amazing book, definitley worth a read. The resistance movement then in Palestine was a different group. The resistant movement now is a different group. Is it fair to relate the ideologies and motives of the 2 different resistant groups?

Really loved, this please continue your great work. A note about the lack of mobilization by Muslim countries. It's hard to decipher, due to lack of behind the scenes information, what Muslim countries are truly capable of doing. I get your point about not tying victory outcomes to legitimacy of jihad. However it is a valid discussion of fiqh i.e. the requirement of jihad at the expense of self-destruction.

Late comment, but that's irrelevant. What I wanted to say is: when you're listening to the last few minutes of this video, be warned and be hyper mindful of the people that will flee during the Malhama and what their fate will be.... We are receiving MANY warnings... this is the time to rectify ourselves AND our offspring. I make du'a that we don't end up a pitiful *disgrace* in the sight of Allah when we die, Ameen.

One thing I don’t understand is - Afghanistan didn’t really affect Saudi regional geopolitics so why did they promote and take such a stand with the struggle in Afghanistan ?

You actually answer this in this in the 2nd episode where you explain how 1979 was a pivotol year in the geopolitics of region and describe some of the reasons why Saudi Arabia supported and propagated the mission in Afghanistan.
