This is Marguerite's aria from Faust, the opera this version of Phantom is based off. And honestly, this is one of my favorite renditions of the aria. So passionately sung!

@@nancyfontana4730 This is what opera SHOULD sound like! There are some who try to disguise their inability to reach certain notes by making it a trill of some kind or they slide their notes to much (if you get my meaning) when doing scales that it all sounds blurred. Opera is more than just blaring out notes, it takes precise vocal control and breathing stability, which isn't easy especially when you're moving around the stage; this coming from a fellow singer and actor (stage wise not movie). And you captured all of this perfectly. And your pacing was brilliant. I could make out every note that you sung. Truly an inspiration to the world!

It's funny. I know the english version of this from the Ken Hill version of phantom which is the beginning of the aria. So I sing the english then switch to French. I wish I had voice lessons... from the Phantom.

I am learning this with my voice teacher right now!

Whoever sang this has the most angelic and beautiful voice i have ever heard.

@@nancyfontana4730 I love this movie and this performance was one of my favorite parts. Your high notes especially are so clear and effortless. Do you have any vocal tips for someone wanting to learn how to sing opera?

@@jerrymouse1117 Hello Jerry - It took me years to get thoses "effortless" high notes LOL! I always had a very large range and was able to move the voice (coloratura) easily. Teachers had a hard time trying to assign a "fach" to my voice because I really was mostly a "high" mezzo. Which is what we eventually focused on because my middle voice was according to my teacher the most beautiful sound wise. We sought out all material that was very soprano-ish without having that designation, which mean't we focused on a lot of the French Mezzo stuff because it IS very soprano-ish. This aria from "Faust" is a perfect example of a Soprano aria not focusing on the higher part of the range, it's mostly written in the middle voice. My vocal tips....are to fully understand and accept your vocal attributes and weaknesses. Every voice has strengths and weaknesses. Focus on perfecting the strengths and steer clear from repertoire that is too revealing of your weaknesses no matter how much you "love" that aria or song, not everything is meant for all voices. Then study hard to perfect them. My voice came together well when I got "out of my throat" and focused on my head voice more to create my sound. I also applied my new head voice technical aspect to the Panofka excersises which are great for building breath support and lots of control and lots of stamina. Best Wishes! Nancy

Even as a little girl I loved opera, and I had some operatic training for a couple years after leaving high school; unfortunately I had a desire to sing songs that my voice couldn't always handle... I use to be classified as a Coloratura Soprano, but since I've grown older and my voice has settled slightly lower, I'll probably have to have it reclassified. I'm excited to see what kind of voice I have now ^.^ Back then, I was trying to make my voice sound darker than it actually was, because I didn't like how high and shrill my voice sounded to me. (looking back on it now, I honestly sounded perfectly fine; I just had a preference for deeper coloration, and tried to make my voice conform to it when that wasn't necessary.) Nowadays I'm trying to embrace songs that bring out my strengths, and coming to terms with songs that I probably shouldn't be adding to my repertoire; what you've said has helped solidify that choice, and has brought me some comfort. ❤

The French diction in this performance is really, really bad. :( However, I think the 1989 Phantom movie did a better job with casting singers than the more recent one! :)

the irony is that her performance wasn't supposed to be good, considering that she was supposedly still an amateur. But, that aspect is lost on people who aren't singers, or speak French.

freakctc the thing is, christine is supposed to be french, so you'd think she'd be able to pronounce the french song text correctly!

keltribel actually Christine in the original novel is Swedish. But here it's not the Paris opera house it's the London opera house. So that might prove your point.... I think.

@@salmonsandwiches Yeah, but any stupid fuck can see that this version is in London so she's English in this movie... And none of the actors in this movie are actual opera singers. It's all dubbed. Dumba ss.

i like this but I prefer the phantom with the mask. He looks more mysterious with a mask one than the one this film

I do believe you've never seen the entire film; The Phantom does indeed have a mask in this movie, it just so happens the phantom is not in this scene. I advise you get your facts straight before commenting, otherwise you look like a daft codger, which I'm quite sure you're not, but from this comment you do come across this way. Of course, I am a Phan myself, but perhaps I am mistaken, and this is a version I have never even heard of before, though just from various searches, I cannot seem to find that I am.Not to come off cocky or rude, though I'm afraid I am, I must say, just please, go over the facts before commenting.Anyway, the phantom in this movie has a full mask, not just half of the face like the play, and this is the first version of the Phantom I had ever seen,or read for that matter. It was this film that introduced me to the greatness that IS Phantom,and I politely (Though I'm afraid I say this rudely in my ranting state, which I'm only in due to the love of typing) that you try to watch the entirety of things, before making assumptions. Please excuse the long reply, as I said, I just felt like typing a lot.

Well i think if the phantom has a mask, then he needs to wear it all the time. that's the whole point of the phantom character. Especially people who haven't seen the phantom of the opera before. I feel without he mask it just takes away from his character.

That's what I was saying: That phantom isn't in this scene. You DID NOT see the phantom at all, in fact, in the entirety of the movie you never even see his face, the camera angle when he doesn't have the mask doesn't allow it. If you want me to reply with a link to a picture of him, I'd gladly do so, but you're coming off ignorant with these comments.

Also ...in the film I actually had to redub the film cut in Calif. after recording in Hungary w/ National Hungarian Orchestra. In the film the music editor was cutting out mili-seconds of the performance due to the stage performer's inability to lip synch to my longer phrasing. She was not a singer and so uncomfortable lip synching longer vowels. So I instead was tasked with looping to her mouth movements. Perhaps that is what you are feeling that the aria is a bit rushed....it is! In the Soundtrack I was able to perform the piece at my original tempi.

Sorry but I find this pretty BAD!
